Gu Xin was happily eating a meat bun, glancing at her mother, sister, and father, just about to make her usual prayer to God that their family could stay this way, when she noticed a still-fresh red welt on Gu Shouxin's hand. Instantly, the bun lost its appeal, and she stopped eating, asking, "Dad, what happened to your hand?"
Upon hearing her words, Cai Xiaolian and Gu Nian also looked over.
The two of them could tell at a glance that the wound on the arm was a knife wound, and it was still bright red and had not yet scabbed over.
Gu Shouxin calmly tugged at his sleeve, switched the bun to his other hand, and said, "I took a back path on the way back, and it was dark, so I couldn't see clearly and got scratched by a thorn tree. It's nothing serious, it'll be fine in a couple of days."
"Dad, be careful next time! Don't get scratched again, it hurts a lot. I got scratched last year when I went to the back mountain with my cousin to carry firewood. It hurt for several days before it healed." Gu Xin was relieved to see that Gu Shouxin seemed unharmed and gave him this advice.
"You! You're the only one in the family who worries too much. No wonder you're not tall. Here, have another bun." Gu Nian put another bun in Gu Xin's bowl.
"Hehe, sister, Grandpa said I'm tall because Dad, Mom, and my sister are all tall. I wasn't adopted; Grandma watched me come out of Mom's belly. I'm not tall because I'm still little," Gu Xin said with a silly grin, picking up a steamed bun.
She used to be very upset about her height because the girls in the village who were about her age were all much taller than her.
She asked Cai Xiaolian about it back then, and Cai Xiaolian scolded her.
Later, the observant Grandpa Gu noticed that she had been depressed for the past few days. He asked her about it with concern, and after understanding the problem, he patiently comforted her.
She's no longer bothered by her height.
The three time travelers instantly realized that Grandpa Gu was a really good person, so kind.
Their daughter, Xin Xin, has no psychological trauma and is still filial to her parents and attached to her older sister, all because Grandpa Gu has been teaching her to live a positive and sunny life.
"Yes, Xinxin is still young. So remember to eat more so you can grow taller, like your parents and older sister." Gu Shouxin gently ladled a bowl of soup for Gu Xin, which contained a lot of egg drop soup.
After a hearty meal, Gu Xin was tired and wanted to sleep.
After struggling to keep her eyes open to look at the things Gu Shouxin had bought, she couldn't resist any longer and went to wash up and go to bed.
Before going to sleep, the jade fish in her hand spat out another bead. She placed it by her pillow, and then, in her sleep, she turned over, and without her knowledge, the jade bead went into her mouth again.
Inside the main room, the three waited for a while to make sure Gu Xin was asleep before they started talking about serious business.
"Dad, did you get slashed at the gambling den? I'm not as easily fooled as Xinxin. I know this is a knife wound," Gu Nian asked with concern.
“Yeah, right! Why are you risking your life? You’re not some high-ranking official anymore, you’re just Gu Shouxin, the gambling addict from Sanchakou Village. Do you think anyone will give you face? They might just rob and kill you on the road.” Cai Xiaolian chimed in.
"It's alright, some people just can't accept losing. I spent some of the money on shopping, and I have four hundred taels left. Apart from the three hundred taels, I exchanged the rest for loose silver." Gu Shouxin took out a money bag containing three one-hundred-tael silver notes and a pile of loose silver.
"How big of a gamble are you taking?" Because Cai Xiaolian had her memories, she could still do the math and knew what the purchasing power of four hundred taels was.
