"Why don't you come over here? I'll cook for you." She looked at the figure gazing up at the rainbow on the wall and mustered her courage to ask.
The man turned around and looked at her.
"Aren't you going to eat? Never mind then." She blushed slightly and turned to go back inside.
"Eat, I'll eat. Ouch!" Perhaps because of his excitement, the waiter lost his balance and fell down.
She rushed to the wall and asked, "What happened? What happened? You're such a big person, how could you be so careless? You used to climb ladders onto those heavy containers without any problems. Are you hurt?"
A voice came from next door: "It's okay, I'm fine."
She took the key out of her pocket and threw it over the wall: "I'm glad you're alright. This is the key to my yard. You definitely didn't use the gate yesterday! Use the key to open the gate and come in later."
The waiter's excited voice rang out: "Hey, great!"
She couldn't help but laugh, then went to the kitchen to get busy.
About half an hour later, the waiter opened the door and came towards the kitchen.
As the waiter watched her busy figure in the kitchen, he suddenly felt a sense of home.
She turned around when she heard the noise and immediately noticed that the waiter had washed his hair and changed his clothes. Even from this distance, she could smell a very faint fragrance that she had never smelled before.
"Do you need any help?" The waiter, feeling a little embarrassed by her gaze, spoke up to break the awkward atmosphere.
“No need, it’ll be ready in a bit. But you can go and watch the fire,” she said, looking away.
The man walked to the fire and gave her the key as he passed by.
"You said a couple of years ago that you had some things to take care of at home, but why did you come back so soon? Have you taken care of those things at home?" It was a bit awkward sitting there in silence, so she tried to start a conversation.
Although they've been neighbors for over a year, they've never talked like this before. The guy had inquired about her and heard about her from others, but she had never asked about him. It seemed that none of the neighbors would specifically talk about him.
“It’s all taken care of.” The man paused for a moment, then answered, and continued, “They’re all gone. I didn’t want to stay there alone. Although I only stayed in this city for a month, I felt very familiar with it, so I came back.”
"I'm sorry to have brought up your painful memories." She hadn't expected that his family had all perished, and she felt a pang of heartache for him.
Isn't that just like her? Rootless and alone in the world.
"So much time has passed, and I'm not really sad anymore. No matter what happens, as long as you can live, you should live well." The man smiled at her and then asked, "Don't you agree?"
“Yes, life is only a few decades long. Nothing else matters; living well is the most important thing,” she said with a smile.
For a moment, the two of them were speechless again.
“I’m in business. I’ve formed a caravan and have several shops in the west of the city. We sell all sorts of goods from the West and across the sea. Among them are items for women. Do you need any? I’ll send someone to deliver them to you,” the shopkeeper said after a while.
"Did you own those shops before?" With shops in the west of the city and goods from across the sea, she immediately knew which ones they were. She was surprised by the change in her employee.
