10 Movie 10‖Who is she?
The rain was getting heavier and heavier, with no sign of stopping.
After a long time, Jing Ning finally finished flipping through the opera book in his hand. He looked up and said solemnly, "It's not completely useless. This book contains the lyrics for the shadow play. At least it shows that there is something wrong with this lady."
Hearing this, Xiao Zhang couldn't sit still any longer. He asked anxiously, "Then what are we waiting for? Go find her!"
Time ticked by, and every minute of delay increased his chances of something happening tonight. He was the only one left in the room that night. If he followed the rules, without any additional conditions, just the first rule, he would undoubtedly be doomed.
The others remained silent, and Xu Yaoyu turned away. It was getting dark again, which meant the horrors of the night were about to begin, and the chances of getting into trouble were much greater when going out at night than when staying home.
"I... I don't want to die..." After a while, the silence was broken by a trembling sound, "What should I do... What should I do..." Xiao Zhang's lips trembled.
After a moment of confusion, Xiao Zhang suddenly walked out muttering to himself, "Oh, I still have time. I'll go ask Auntie for clarification."
Yan Shuang stood up and shouted, "I'll sit here and wait for you until nine o'clock."
"Okay." Xiao Zhang waved to him, turned around and was submerged in the night by the heavy rain.
Yan Shuang watched Xiao Zhang's retreating figure, and a wave of sadness returned to his heart. He couldn't save everyone, and he knew his abilities were limited. So, he could only sit back in his chair and wait quietly.
Time passed minute by minute, and Jing Ning and Lin Haichen were also discussing plans for tomorrow.
Jing Ning said, "I want to go to the village chief's room tomorrow to check. His room is the only one that hasn't been searched."
"Okay." Lin Haichen nodded and said, "I've always thought he was weird. There are only two days left, so we have to speed up."
Jing Ning gently closed his eyes, a tired look on his face, but he still replied softly: "Yeah, almost there."
Yan Shuang was staring at the door in a daze. When he came to his senses, he found that Jing Ning was the only one left in the living room. He was sitting there quietly, motionless, as if he was in a daze, but also as if he was looking at him intently.
"Why don't you go back and rest? I can wait for you alone." Yan Shuang said.
"I'm hungry and can't sleep." Jing Ning changed his hand to support his head.
Only then did Yan Shuang remember that they had not had dinner. "I'm a little tired just now. You must be very hungry. I'll go get something for you." Yan Shuang said as he stood up and walked towards the kitchen.
When passing by him, Jing Ning reached out and grabbed Yan Shuang's arm, as if he had something to say.
Yan Shuang stopped and waited quietly for Jing Ning to speak. Finally, he just loosened his arms and said in a deep voice, "Go."
When the food was placed in front of Jing Ning, he didn't eat it. Yan Shuang knew that he was just looking for an excuse to move himself, to find something to do, to stop himself from thinking about random things.
"Now you understand why Lin Haichen has always been lukewarm towards newcomers." Jing Ning looked at Yan Shuang in front of him with complicated eyes, and slowly continued: "You see all kinds of deaths every day in the game. If you are familiar with fewer people, at least it won't have much impact when you leave." His voice was calm and deep, as if he was numb after experiencing countless life and death separations.
"You may think it's inhumane when I say this, but it's also the truth." Jing Ning sighed softly, with a hint of helplessness and bitterness in his eyes.
He knew very well the cruelty of the game, where everyone was struggling for survival and facing death was commonplace.
He used to be as passionate and curious as Yan Shuang, but as time went by, he witnessed countless differences and human nature, and gradually became accustomed to it and closed himself off.
"But I still don't want to become like this." Jing Ning leaned back and murmured softly.
He hopes he can always be brave, strong and warm.
Nine o'clock was finally approaching. Yan Shuang moved a chair and sat opposite the door. Time passed quickly in the atmosphere of anxiety and unwillingness. Unfortunately, Xiao Zhang never showed up.
"It's half past nine. Let's go back. If we wait any longer, it might be dangerous." Jing Ning said.
"Well, let's go," Yan Shuang did not hesitate this time and left decisively.
It was a silent morning, and everyone knew that Xiao Zhang had not returned home all night.
Yan Shuang also adjusted her state. Holding a vegetarian bun in her left hand and a bowl in her right hand, she ate her breakfast and said, "We'll go to the village chief's house later. How will we find him if he's at home? And I don't think the village chief looks like a human being."
Lin Haichen nodded and said, "If he is at home, we must find someone with good physical strength to lead him out."
Yan Shuang: "In that case, I..."
Before he could finish the word "go", Jing Ning interrupted him, "You can't go, you have to search carefully, you have to go into the room to look for it."
"Then you three go look for it in the room, I'll go." Lin Haichen said.
Seeing the other three people looking at him, Lin Haichen put down his chopsticks and said calmly, "It's not that I'm giving in to you, it's really that I'm the most suitable person to go. Yan Shuang and Jing Ning, you can solve any problems you encounter in a timely manner. Xiaoyu is a girl and her physical strength is still not as good as that of boys."
"Don't underestimate me because I'm a doctor. Being a doctor is very physically demanding, so I'm the most suitable person to go." Lin Haichen smiled, just like his name, giving people an inexplicable calmness. "I'll come find you when I get rid of you."
The three of them agreed to Lin Haichen's division of labor, and after breakfast, they groped their way over.
Fortunately, they were lucky this time and the village chief was not at home.
"Search separately." Jing Ning said after entering the house.
Yan Shuang slipped into a small room in the darkness. Judging from the layout, it should be a storage room.
It was filled with wooden boxes of all sizes. The wood had begun to turn white due to the passage of time.
Yan Shuang carefully opened one of the boxes, and the box made a "creaking" sound, and an old black and white photo came into view.
"Come and see." Yan Shuang shouted.
The three of them came over following the sound. Jing Ning raised the kerosene lamp and carefully identified the people in the photo.
"This is the village chief when he was young, right?" Xu Yaoyu pointed at the person in the middle of the photo.
"Yes, his appearance hasn't changed, he just got older." Jing Ning said.
"Who is the woman standing next to the village chief?" Yan Shuang asked.
"Let me see." Lin Haichen took the photo, looked at it for a while and said, "It's that old lady."
"Are you sure?" Jing Ning asked.
"That's for sure. No matter how a person changes, their bone structure never changes." Lin Hai paused, frowning, and after thinking, he said, "This photo is full of people from this village."
"Look, are you the old man who lives at the entrance of the village, and this one..." Lin Haichen's fingers kept sliding across the photos.
"Group photo?" Yan Shuang said, then pointed to the little girl to the village chief's left and asked, "Who is she?"
"There is no such little girl in the village." Jing Ning said, picked up the photo and turned it to the back.
There were no windows in the room and the light was too dim, so no one had noticed the back of the photo before.
It was only when Jingning turned the photo over that he saw a few inconspicuous small words on the back of the photo: A group photo of all the shadow puppet show staff in March 1822.
"1822? What time is it now according to the time in the game?" Lin Hai said solemnly.
Yan Shuang quickly walked out of the house. He remembered that when he first entered, there was a calendar hanging at the door.
When he saw the time on it, he was stunned. The calendar was 2016.
So everyone in the entire village is at least two hundred years old?
Or maybe they are no longer human, and who is that little girl?
