Chapter 1 Attorney Wen, do you believe in love?
At one o'clock in the morning, Wenxi returned home from working overtime at the law firm and received a call from her client as soon as she entered the door.
"Attorney Wen, do you believe in love?"
Wen Xi calmly said, "Ms. Hu, the court's divorce decree has been issued."
"If you still have feelings for the defendant, you can negotiate to get a new marriage certificate."
On the other end of the phone, Ms. Hu tearfully recalled how her ex-husband had braved the rain to travel across most of the city to buy her steamed buns.
While answering the phone, Wenxi changed her shoes, hung her bag on the rack, and went into the second-floor bedroom.
She was so engrossed in the phone call that she didn't notice the bedroom light was on.
As was her habit, Wenxi walked to the window and leaned against the wall, listening to Ms. Hu's tearful account of her marriage and love.
It lasted a full half hour.
Ms. Hu received a phone call and could only quickly end the conversation: "Attorney Wen, I regret it."
"Could you help me get the divorce decree overturned so that we can still be husband and wife?"
"If we get a marriage certificate again, we'll be in our second marriage."
Wen Xi remained silent for a moment, then said self-deprecatingly, "Perhaps it will be possible when I become the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court."
Ms. Hu pressed further, "Attorney Wen, when will you become the President of the Supreme People's Court?!"
Wenxi: "..."
After hanging up the phone, Wenxi felt completely exhausted.
She lowered her head, leaned against the window, and remained motionless, as if all her energy had been drained away.
"Have you been very busy lately?"
A deep, resonant voice rang out, and the night seemed to be shrouded in a cold, frosty hue.
Wenxi looked up and realized it was Shang Chen, her new husband.
The man had long legs and broad shoulders, deep and upright eyebrows and eyes, and a calm and majestic aura that was both pleasing to the eye and imposing.
Wenxi put away her phone: "It's alright."
Shang Chen was wearing a bathrobe, and there were still water droplets in his hair, as if he had just taken a shower.
Wenxi's gaze swept over his bathrobe: "Is there a problem with the bathroom in the second bedroom?"
She originally wanted to ask Shang Chen why he was in the master bedroom.
Asking that question makes it seem like she doesn't want to see him.
Although they were an arranged marriage, they were prepared to live a good life together.
“No problem.” Shang Chen: “Perfect timing, let’s talk about separation.”
He sat on the sofa, calm and collected as if he were about to hold a family meeting.
Wenxi: "Go ahead."
Shang Chen asked bluntly, "Don't you want to sleep with me?"
"No."
"Then why did you have my things moved to the second bedroom?"
Wenxi explained, "Yesterday you went to sleep in the second bedroom. I thought you wanted to separate, and I respected your wishes."
The two got their marriage certificate yesterday and attended a family dinner at a business in the afternoon.
Wenxi was too tired when she got back, so she went to sleep first.
When she woke up in the morning, she found that the sheets next to her were not wrinkled. She asked and found out that Shang Chen had slept in the second bedroom last night.
On their wedding night, the husband slept silently in the second bedroom.
Wenxi thought that Shang Chen didn't want to share a room with her.
She considerately asked the housekeeper to reorganize Shang Chen's belongings and send them to the second bedroom.
Shang Chen: "When I came back last night, you... weren't sleeping in a good position. I didn't want to disturb you, so I went to the second bedroom."
Shang Chen said it wasn't a good idea; that was already quite subtle.
Wenxi lay sprawled out in the middle of the bed, while Shang Chen couldn't possibly sleep huddled in a corner.
He was born noble and would never sleep on a sofa.
Wenxi never expected to make such a big blunder, and it was even a bit embarrassing.
She usually sleeps in a good position, but she becomes a bit unrestrained after drinking alcohol.
On the day they got their marriage certificate, she drank a couple more glasses at the family dinner in the afternoon and was indeed a little drunk.
If Shang Chen hadn't talked to her directly, the two might have separated in a muddled way, and they probably would have secretly blamed each other.
"I'm sorry, it was my fault." Wenxi readily admitted her mistake and offered, "I'll go and bring your things back."
"No need, I'll have someone take care of it tomorrow."
After Shang Chen finished speaking, the room fell into a deathly silence.
He knew that he spent most of his time at the company, and his speech carried an air of pressure and seriousness, always sounding like he was giving orders.
Wenxi is his wife, and he shouldn't have spoken to her in that tone. He added, "It's too late today, get some rest."
Wen Xi looked up at Shang Chen, somewhat surprised.
Is he explaining?
Although the tone didn't seem to change much, still sounding like he was giving orders, it was still somewhat unexpected.
Before the marriage, Wenxi had heard many rumors about Shang Chen.
A power manipulator on Wall Street, heir to a top-tier wealthy family in Beijing, with a benevolent face but a wicked heart, and ruthless methods.
Of course, her biological parents said that Shang Chen was steady, conservative, and reliable, someone she could spend her life with.
Wenxi and he had only been married for two days and were still getting to know each other.
His coldness was expected, but the explanation was unexpected.
Shang Chen asked again, "Have you been very busy with work lately?"
Wenxi didn't like talking about work, but she realized this was the second time Shang Chen had asked her.
Her engagement to Shang Chen was changed halfway through, and the two of them had no emotional foundation to begin with. If she were too indifferent, it would not be conducive to the development of their marital relationship.
Wenxi replied proactively, "Yes, someone just asked me if I believe in love."
Shang Chen lowered his eyes and looked at her patiently.
"Do you believe it?"
Wenxi paused.
The fact that she agreed to marry Shang Chen already makes the answer quite obvious.
Wenxi said tactfully, "This person was subjected to domestic violence by her ex-husband, which led to her being hospitalized several times. Her ex-husband also cheated on her and gambled, accumulating huge debts. She couldn't bear it any longer, so she filed a lawsuit."
"The divorce case lasted a year and a half, and the verdict was only delivered today."
"She called me that night and said she still loved him, regretted it, and asked if I could have the verdict overturned."
Wenxi thought that few people would want this kind of love.
Shang Chen fell silent.
He had probably never encountered such an eccentric person in his life.
After a long pause, he finally said, "Didn't you say you don't pursue civil litigation?"
I didn't expect that Shang Chen knew about her work.
"It's a legal aid case."
Wenxi had excellent grades since childhood and joined Zhongda Law Firm after graduating from Germany.
After a year of internship, I followed my mentor into the world of non-litigation work. This year, due to poor health, I have slowly begun to shift my focus to intellectual property and litigation.
But if it weren't for providing legal aid, she really wouldn't touch divorce cases.
Shang Chen: "Thank you for your hard work."
Wenxi was silent for a moment, then nodded: "It's alright."
Upon hearing the words "You've worked hard," Wenxi almost imagined the director patting her shoulder in comfort.
She's used to being a boss, so she'll have to get used to her new husband's tone.
I chatted with Shang Chen a bit more today, which was a major breakthrough for the two of us since our marriage.
Wenxi: "I'm going to take a shower first."
When Wenxi came out after taking a shower, Shang Chen was already lying in bed.
Hearing the noise, Shang Chen looked up and said, "There's water on the table."
Wenxi then noticed a glass of water on the bedside table, which Shang Chen must have poured for her.
"Thanks."
She picked up the water glass and took a sip; it was lukewarm.
After drinking more than half a cup in one go, Wenxi finally felt her fatigue subside a bit.
After lying down on the bed, Wenxi asked, "Are you going to sleep?"
Shang Chen: "Turn off the lights."
Wenxi was just about to turn off the light when she suddenly remembered something.
They were newlyweds, and what they missed on their wedding night should, in principle, be made up for the next day.
Wenxi tilted her head and asked, "Do you want to do it?"
Shang Chen: "...Are you interested?"
"No."
"I don't have any either."
Even if two people who don't know each other well are in bed together and are legally married, they can't just do whatever they want.
Even if you manage to do it, the quality won't be good.
Wenxi doesn't like to wrong herself, and she thinks Shang Chen is probably the same.
Wenxi: "Let's discuss it again tomorrow."
"Can."
Wenxi turned off the light, neatly covered herself with the blanket, and gave Shang Chen enough space.
Neither of them felt there was anything wrong with their conversation just now.
