Chapter 4 Shang Chen Protects His Wife
Shang Chen spoke up: "Why are you all at your parents-in-law's house today?"
He was asking about Yan Zhao's husband, Lu Jinghuai, who was also Wen Xi's ex-fiancé.
Lu Jinghuai: "Yan Zhao said she misses her parents."
Yan Zhao smiled and said, "Mm..."
Shang Chen suddenly said, "It's not appropriate. Let's try to avoid it next time."
His comment that it was inappropriate successfully changed the expression on the faces of the Yan siblings.
Yan Xu still respected Shang Chen, but said in a low voice with dissatisfaction, "Brother-in-law, she just said it was okay."
"My sister is already here, are my family members going to kick her out?"
Shang Chen ignored Yan Xu and only said to Yan Huai'an, the head of the family, "You are the elder and I am the junior. It is not appropriate for me to say these things, but Wenxi is my wife and I cannot watch her suffer."
"My parents-in-law and the Wen family have agreed that even if the children are switched back, they will still visit each other as usual, but they should maintain a proper distance between their biological daughter and their adopted daughter."
Shang Chen spoke in a calm and steady tone, with a proper manner.
"At least Wenxi didn't visit the Wen family when Yan Zhao returned home for her third wedding anniversary."
Today is Wenxi's third-day homecoming. Yan Zhao and his wife arrived first, laughing and joking with the Yan family, leaving Wenxi out of the picture.
Was she trying to make Wenxi realize that she didn't fit in with this family and was a newcomer?
Lu Jinghuai nodded: "We were indeed wrong in this matter."
Lu Jinghuai was unaware that today was the day Wenxi returned to her parents' home after three days of mourning.
Yan Zhao suddenly said she missed her parents, so he drove her over.
If he had known earlier, Lu Jinghuai would not have let her come.
Although he and Wenxi didn't have much of a relationship, they had grown up together and shared a bond, so he wouldn't do anything to embarrass Wenxi.
Yan Zhao's eyes reddened, and she looked somewhat aggrieved. "I'm sorry, I didn't think that much about it."
Shang Chen spoke like an elder: "You're not young anymore, remember to think more next time."
Yan Zhao: "I'm sorry, it won't happen again next time."
She glanced at Lu Jinghuai subconsciously, only to find that he didn't speak up for her at all.
Shang Chen is Wen Xi's husband, and he protects Wen Xi, which Yan Zhao can understand.
But Lu Jinghuai was her husband, and he didn't say a word when she was wronged.
Was it because Lu Jinghuai felt she had done something wrong, or was Lu Jinghuai still having feelings for Wenxi and was speaking up for her?
Wenxi was surprised that Shang Chen would stand up for her, and her feelings were mixed.
Seeing that the atmosphere was not right, Zhou Ruo changed the subject and said, "Xixi, you like to drink pork tripe and chicken soup. I tried to make it myself today. Help me taste it later and see if there is anything that can be improved."
Wenxi: "Okay."
Zhou Ruo got up and went to the kitchen, and Yan Zhao followed her, probably to wipe away her tears.
Her emotions come and go quickly.
A moment later, Yan Zhao's laughter echoed from the kitchen: "Mom, I want to eat the crispy fried pork you made. Have you made it yet?"
Zhou Ruo: "You came so suddenly, I only had time to tell the aunt to do it."
From a distance, through the kitchen glass door, you could see Yan Zhao hugging Zhou Ruo's waist and acting coquettishly: "Mom, now that you have Wenxi, you don't love me anymore."
Zhou Ruo: "What nonsense are you talking about? Today is Xixi's homecoming day. We'll eat a couple more bowls of soup later to share in her joy."
Wenxi looked away and chatted casually with her father, Yan Huai'an, about work.
After finishing their meal, Lu Jinghuai was the first to suggest leaving.
Wen Xi followed suit, saying, "Shang Chen has a meeting tonight, so we won't stay any longer."
Shang Chen glanced at her. "I'm actually not that busy."
Wenxi took his arm and said gently, "No, you're busy."
Shang paused for a moment, then calmly changed his words: "Yes, I'm busy."
Yan Huai'an and his wife wanted to stay in Wenxi a little longer, but even after saying everything they wanted to say, they couldn't keep them there.
More than twenty years of emotional loss cannot be made up for overnight.
After seeing them off, Zhou Ruo suddenly ran to the second-floor balcony and stared down at the location of the garage.
In the large parking lot, Yan Zhao clung to Lu Jinghuai's arm and acted coquettishly. Lu Jinghuai helped her into the passenger seat and even fastened her seatbelt.
They look like a loving couple deeply in love.
On the other side, after Wenxi and Shangchen disappeared from sight, the two immediately separated and walked away, appearing very cold and distant.
Upon arriving at the garage, each person got into a car and drove away without even saying goodbye.
They don't look like a married couple at all.
Yan Huai'an went upstairs to see his wife. "What are you looking at?"
Zhou Ruo watched the car drive away without moving.
Yan Huai'an sensed something was wrong, turned his wife's face to look at her, and found that she had been crying all over her face.
"Huai'an, we were wrong!"
"There's no such thing as having it all. We can only have one child out of the two."
Wenxi is her biological daughter, and she owes her twenty-seven years of her life.
Having finally found her, she still had to endure more injustice... Thinking of the stark contrast between the two couples, Zhou Ruo felt as if her heart was being torn apart.
Zhou Ruo: "No wonder she refused to change her surname."
"This child must have some resentment towards us."
“She and Lu Jinghuai were childhood sweethearts… Lu Jinghuai is a reliable person, and the entire Lu family is very satisfied with her. This marriage should have been Wenxi’s.”
The happiness that Yan Zhao is enjoying now should also belong to Wen Xi.
"It was already unfair to Wenxi to let Yan Zhao marry Lu Jinghuai."
"Shang Chen is outstanding, but no matter how outstanding he is, it's not someone Wen Xi wants to marry."
Everyone knows that Wenxi agreed to marry Shang Chen because she had become a daughter of the Yan family, and for the sake of both families' interests, she had no choice but to marry him.
Zhou Ruo: "From the very beginning, Wenxi had no choice."
When the two families discovered that their babies had been switched at birth, they discussed it and decided to switch their biological children back.
Both sides took care of the children's mental well-being and organized the first family reunion banquet.
Unexpectedly, Yan Zhao called in tears at the crucial moment, saying she didn't want to come.
She still couldn't accept that she wasn't her parents' biological daughter and refused to acknowledge them as her parents.
Worried that something might happen, Zhou Ruo and Yan Huai'an hurriedly left their seats to find someone.
Yan Xu valued her sister the most, and shouted at Wen Xi, "My sister doesn't want to leave home, so why can't you stay at your own home? What are you doing coming back?!"
"Now you've caused trouble for both of us, are you satisfied?!"
After shouting, he went to find Yan Zhao.
Wenxi's adoptive mother was also worried and went around looking for people, fearing that her biological daughter Yan Zhao might be in danger.
The adoptive father was busy with work, and seeing that the family reunion could not be arranged, he went to the company after sitting for less than three minutes.
In the large hotel private room, dishes were served one after another, but Wenxi sat alone.
Wenxi finished her lunch alone and went to work at the law firm as usual.
The second family reunion banquet was held half a month later.
Wenxi only raised one suggestion throughout the entire event: not to change her surname.
Only now is Zhou Ruo slowly beginning to appreciate it.
Wenxi probably already harbored resentment towards them back then.
The fact that she insists on using the surname Wen shows that she is actually unwilling to join the Yan family and has not truly accepted that she is a daughter of the Yan family.
So when Yan Xu made a scene today, and Yan Zhao acted coquettishly and felt wronged, she didn't take it to heart at all, treating herself as an outsider.
Yan Huai'an sighed, "I told you before, people can't be too greedy. You can't want both your biological daughter and your adopted daughter."
“Children raised from a young age are naturally closer. If the adopted daughter is too affectionate when they are together, the biological child will definitely have some reservations.”
"But if you treat your biological children too well, you will inevitably neglect your adopted daughter and make her suffer."
"Yan Zhao is simple-minded and capricious. She does whatever she wants, which inevitably makes her prone to hurting others. Wen Xi is sensible, but we can't let her suffer losses forever."
Zhou Ruo wiped away her tears: "Now you know how to make sarcastic remarks, why weren't you more decisive before?"
Yan Huai'an: "I understand the logic, but who can really be heartless and disown the child they raised?"
"Like today, Zhao Zhao wanted to go home for a visit. Even if we knew in advance, would we not allow her to come?"
Yan Zhao was a child they had cherished and pampered. Even if they found out that she wasn't their biological child, they wouldn't turn their backs on her.
