Chapter 19 He really is that rigid and boring
Shang Chen: "I heard you just got back from a business trip too?"
Wenxi: "I went to the neighboring province to investigate some data and didn't get back until the afternoon. I also finished up a case while I was at it."
As they were talking, Shang Chen served Wen Xi a bowl of soup.
Wenxi took the soup and was about to pick up a spoon when Shang Chen handed it to her.
She paused for a moment, then took it.
The two weren't particularly close, but they seemed to have developed some tacit understanding.
Are you tired?
"It's alright." Wen Xi smiled. "I should be asking you that."
Shang Chen had been away on a business trip for two days. He rushed to the restaurant as soon as he got off the plane, without even having time to catch his breath.
The two of them prepared the meal in a hurry.
Shang Chen: "I'm fine."
Wenxi asked casually, "What are your hobbies?"
Shang Chen thought of the hobbies listed on Wen Xi's resume: tennis, drums, rock climbing, bungee jumping, skiing, paragliding... He didn't even finish reading them all at a glance.
But he clearly remembered that the last sentence said she liked extreme sports, the more exciting the better.
Shang Chen was steady and rigid, living a life of routine and routine, with interests completely opposite to Wen Xi's.
Shang Chen: "Fishing, golf, and occasionally working out."
Wenxi paused for a moment, then said, "It's a very healthy hobby."
“My grandfather used to love fishing. After he retired, he would fish every day without fail, from eight in the morning to five in the evening, but he didn’t catch much.”
The grandfather Wenxi mentioned was the late Mr. Wen.
Her expression was calm, with a slight smile at the corners of her mouth: "When you retire, you won't be afraid of having nothing to do."
Shang Chen lifted his eyelids and glanced at Wen Xi.
She was teasing him.
"Retirement is still a long way off; maybe I'll have other hobbies by then."
Wenxi: "That's true."
In fact, just by looking at Shang Chen now, she could already imagine what he would be like when he retired.
The only difference is that you have to work now, but you won't need to work when you retire.
While they were chatting, Shang Chen suddenly took a box out of his suit pocket.
The man's well-defined fingertips pressed down on the box and pushed it forward slightly, his posture refined and composed.
Wenxi: "What is this?"
"A gift for you."
Wenxi: "A gift for a business trip?"
Shang Chen fell silent: "...A date gift."
Wen Xi was somewhat surprised. Shang Chen was quite capable.
She opened the box and saw a purple diamond bracelet, exquisite and beautiful, which matched her wedding ring quite well.
Wen Xi joked, "I'm a little surprised. Mr. Shang isn't as rigid and boring as people say?"
Shang Chen pursed his lips: "..."
He's just that rigid and boring.
The assistant suggested he buy this bracelet after hearing that he wanted to have dinner alone with Wenxi.
Without his assistant's advice, he wouldn't have even thought of giving a gift.
Shang Chen felt stabbed in the back, but chose to silently process it: "Do you like it?"
Wenxi picked up the bracelet and put it on, then looked at it under the light for a moment. "It's very pretty."
The light shone on her fair and slender wrist, making the purple diamonds sparkle and be dazzling.
Shang Chen caught a glimpse of the faint smile on her lips and silently kept the matter to himself.
Shang Chen: "We'll need a pair of wedding rings for the wedding. When are you free?"
Having made a mistake once, Shang Chen is taking this wedding ring very seriously.
The wedding ring has special significance, and he plans to choose one with Wenxi.
Wenxi thought for a moment, "I have to go on a business trip this weekend, so I'll probably have to wait until next weekend."
Shang Chen: "Then next weekend, I'll have someone arrange it."
After finishing her meal, Wenxi looked tired, and her makeup couldn't hide it.
Shang Chen: "Are you very tired?"
"A little."
"Take my car back."
"What about my car?"
"Call a designated driver." Shang Chen: "Are you planning to drive while fatigued?"
Wen Xi: "...It's not that bad."
She was just a little sleepy; it couldn't possibly be considered driving while fatigued.
However, faced with Shang Chen's disapproving gaze, Wen Xi had no choice but to admit defeat.
As Wenxi left the restaurant, she ran into several lawyers from nearby law firms, as well as a colleague from Zhongda Law Firm.
Since the other party greeted her first, Wenxi felt it was inappropriate not to respond.
She took Shang Chen's arm and introduced him generously, "This is my husband, come and have dinner with us."
The name was not mentioned.
Once outside, Wenxi explained, "My circle has a fair amount of contact with yours, though not a lot. If I introduce your name, I'm sure a lot of people will come to me to try and build connections."
"I'm not afraid of trouble, I'm just afraid of affecting you."
The scheming and maneuvering in the business world is impossible to guard against.
Wenxi was afraid that someone would find out about her relationship with Shang Chen and use her to scheme against him.
“When the news of my engagement to Lu Jinghuai first came out, an angel investor offered me two big deals. I wasn’t on guard and almost got caught up in them.”
That investor was too shrewd; he made Wenxi's case simple, easy, and highly profitable.
Wenxi initially suspected a scam, but after investigating from all angles and finding nothing amiss, she took over the case.
After the case was closed, she received the full payment.
Suddenly, rumors started circulating that she had helped investors connect with Lu Jinghuai through these two cases, and that the investors had given them to her as a favor.
At that time, Lu Jinghuai's company launched a new product, which happened to be favored by both this investor and another company.
Lu Jinghuai prefers another company and has already decided to sign a contract.
This news almost caused problems with the collaboration.
"How was it resolved in the end?"
"I asked my brother to help me resolve it, but it still affected Lu Jinghuai's company's reputation."
Wen Xi sighed, "It was after that incident that I realized how ruthless you people in the capital industry can be."
Lawyers are often said to be shrewd, but when it comes to capital, they are still easily manipulated.
"Once bitten, twice shy. Your reputation is even more renowned than Lu Jinghuai's, so I'll keep a low profile this time."
It was also because of this scheme that Wen Xi believed the business community's assessment of Shang Chen, saying that he had the appearance of a bodhisattva but the heart of a demon, and that his methods were ruthless.
She also believed her parents' assessment that Shang Chen was steady, conservative, and reliable.
Men can have two completely different faces, one at work and one in life.
Wenxi herself doesn't have a very good reputation in the industry.
Shang Chen originally wanted to say that it was nothing to worry about, as this matter wouldn't affect him, but he was also afraid of increasing Wen Xi's workload.
Shang Chen: "We are husband and wife. If you need anything in the future, you can just tell me directly. Don't worry about affecting me."
Wenxi replied frankly, "I will."
After getting into the Bentley, a business sedan, Wenxi started to feel sleepy not long after.
Seeing that she was sleeping restlessly, Shang Chen reached out to help Wenxi adjust the back of her chair.
As soon as he leaned over, Wenxi leaned forward and rested against his chest.
Wenxi suddenly opened her eyes, caught a glimpse of Shang Chen's tall and handsome face, recognized him as her husband, and closed her eyes to continue sleeping.
Isn't this how you use your husband?
Shang Chen stood frozen in place for a moment. Seeing that Wen Xi didn't react, he simply adjusted his position and let Wen Xi sleep in his arms.
It's rare for the two to be this close.
Shang Chen lowered his eyes and looked at Wen Xi.
Her features are exquisitely beautiful, yet her temperament is aloof and sharp, always giving the impression that she has a tough temper and is not to be trifled with.
But when he put his arm around her, Shang Chen realized how soft she was, and how she had a faint, cool fragrance.
If Wenxi hadn't been so sleepy, she probably wouldn't have nestled so obediently in his arms.
Shang Chen's dark gaze fell on Wen Xi's lips, then quietly moved away, his expression calm and indifferent.
