Day 9 of failing to clear the game
Judith rushed out too late—not because she was too late to save the boss's wife, but because she was too late to realize she had been deceived by Peter.
Whoever cares more is more likely to act irrationally.
Aside from being the wife of the big boss, Veronica was also his half-sister whom he valued highly and to whom he served his master.
The Skowitch family doesn't keep useless people; Veronica is the only exception.
They are fickle, foolish, and naive, and enjoy manipulating people's hearts when they are at their peak of affection before cruelly shattering them.
Judith had a hapless brother who suffered a terrible fate because of this and is now regretting it in hell.
Judith doesn't believe Veronica is so weak and innocent that she needs to be saved.
But what he saw proved that Veronica was facing danger head-on.
Veronica, carrying a white handbag and wearing a champagne-colored long dress, stood at the store entrance, looking around.
Where are her bodyguards?
What about the store's security?
The "woman" in the lace hat and her companion pretend to talk, but actually approach Veronica, who is alone in front of the shop.
Danger is imminent, you idiot Veronica!
Judith's cold heart hastily cracked open when he wasn't paying attention.
Peter hugged Adrian and chuckled, "An unexpected bonus: the boss's wife is more important than I imagined."
The Judith in the Deathstroke message was very different from the Judith in front of him. Compared to the ruthlessness and caution Judith showed in their last brief encounter, she seemed very unprofessional this time.
"Woof," she must be very important.
“Who knows,” Peter said, drawing his pistol. Elizabeth was one of his favorite weapons, and it wouldn’t disappoint him.
"Go hide over there, and don't take your earplugs out before I take them off."
"Woof woof woof," why does the puppy need earplugs? The puppy doesn't need them!
Peter, sensing Ali's dissatisfaction, gave the puppy a perfunctory pat on the head. "I know our Ali is strong, not a fragile little dog, but today it's Elizabeth, and her voice is a bit loud."
The sound of a silenced large-caliber gun is pleasant to the human ear, but it is not so friendly to the hearing of small animals.
For Ali's sake, he obediently wore earplugs.
There's no turning back once the arrow is released; Judith couldn't retreat back to the ice cream parlor after making her move. She could only move forward, forward, and faster and faster.
If Veronica dies, the lady's arrangements within the Francis family will completely collapse.
Deathstroke's disciples would not risk their lives for the lady, much less kindly save Veronica, who has no vested interest in him.
In the end, Judith didn't even have a chance to act; Peter had already shot and killed the fake assassin before Judith could stop him.
Judith slowly stopped and looked coldly at the origin of the ballistic trajectory.
Peter whistled, picked up the puppy, and climbed over the fence.
Even if it wasn't his fault, if the big boss found out he hadn't helped her, he would suffer a terrible fate. Peter silently apologized; the big boss hadn't given up on Veronica yet.
Of course, only Peter himself knows how much of that involved testing Judith.
After dealing with the assassin, the bodyguards who had disappeared finally arrived. "Mrs. Veronica, are you alright?"
The bodyguard captain spoke with great concern, but the surprise in his eyes did not match his outward appearance.
Peter and Judith both guessed that someone had bribed Veronica's security, and that someone had a deep-seated grudge against her and wanted her dead.
“Mrs. Veronica, I’m sorry to have startled you,” Peter said calmly, turning Judith to the opposite side of the bodyguard captain to separate him from Veronica and prevent the captain from acting rashly.
Who cares who becomes a human shield? Peter didn't want to become cannon fodder in the Francis family's internal strife.
Peter quickly realized that what happened today was a family feud.
The bodyguard captain was more senior than him and was trusted by the big boss, which is why he was assigned to be in charge of security for the "family members".
Given the boss's personality, the bodyguard captain would be in big trouble if he went back. What gives him the confidence to look down on Veronica?
The bodyguard was still rambling on, essentially trying to shift the blame, while Veronica, her face pale, seemed to be still reeling from her brush with death.
Judith? He's just a driver here, not high enough in status to face the bodyguard captain. To avoid ruining his image, he's acting as a human shield, devoid of emotion.
It seemed he was the only one left. Peter sighed and gently tugged at the leash. He should meet with Judith at another time.
Adrian, who had been spacing out, felt a pull on his neck. After half a second, he remembered what his boss was doing, and he understood.
The understanding little dog barked loudly at the bodyguard captain, startling everyone present except the boss.
The bodyguard captain shut his mouth, Mrs. Veronica was free from fear, and Judith was on guard.
Peter's lips curled slightly upward as he said, "I will report today's events to the big boss truthfully. Mrs. Veronica should return to the manor as soon as possible to prevent any further accidents. Captain, you agree, right?"
The bodyguard captain, seemingly questioning but actually putting pressure on Peter, looked at his bulging waist, the vicious dog on a leash, and his gleaming white teeth and fierce eyes.
Good heavens, he's as tall as his waist!
The bodyguard captain, his face pale, dared not move. Not only was Peter and his dog threatening him, but all of Francis's family members near the shopping street had rushed over the moment they heard the gunshot, and by now they should have surrounded the entire shopping street, so that not even a fly could get out.
Where can he run to?
Finally, the bodyguard captain nodded meekly and said, "Mr. Peter is right."
Let's pray that the second boss won't let him die too painfully.
“What do you say, Mrs. Veronica?” Peter, who had dealt with the bodyguard captain, looked at her.
Mrs. Veronica glanced at Judith discreetly, and seeing that Judith didn't react, said, "Thank you for your help, Mr. Peter. Now I just want to get back to Francis's side."
Peter bypassed the head of the bodyguards and ordered, "Hurry up and escort Mrs. Veronica back to the estate."
The silent bodyguards subconsciously obeyed the orders of this rising star favored by the big boss, and no one paid attention to the feelings of the bodyguard captain who had been suppressed by Peter.
Besides, didn't the head of the bodyguards agree with Mr. Peter's words?
Peter casually got into the van, amidst the envious or resentful gazes of the crowd, and took his vicious dog with him.
Arguing and talking nonsense? Only incompetent people get bogged down in trivial details. Will his words slap the face of the problematic bodyguard captain, or will he be able to arrest and execute the people arranged by the big boss without any evidence?
Please, the big boss who can make decisions isn't here. Leaving aside whether the former subordinates of the bodyguard captain would obey his orders, his overstepping of authority afterward would ruin the image of unwavering loyalty he's carefully cultivated in the big boss's eyes.
Who are Veronica and Judith to him? They're just subordinates of two of Deathstroke's temporary partners, or even partners who are bound to be killed by Deathstroke. Why would he bother with something so thankless?
As for not using his name, it was simply because Peter didn't remember.
Peter tried to get Ali to look out the window by supporting him under his armpits, but he was defeated by the tall, well-trimmed palm trees that kept receding outside the car window.
The car was going too fast for the dog's eyes to see properly. Peter understood the driver's desire to get back to the manor as soon as possible to avoid any complications, but why couldn't Veronica go back first? Would it cause any problems if he was a few minutes late?
If the driver knew what Peter was thinking, he would definitely cry foul and even ask Peter if it wasn't him who asked to send Mrs. Veronica back to the estate as soon as possible.
The dog, Adrian, was completely unaware of the incident and was resting with his eyes closed in his boss's arms.
I don't know why his involvement in the events that the boss experienced decreased dramatically after he turned into a puppy. Is it just his imagination?
Compared to his caring and capable subordinates, he is more like an emotional comforter, or perhaps a witness.
Witnessing certain key events in the amnesiac boss's past experiences, yet unable to intervene or interfere with the direction of these events.
Adrian felt frustrated; he had a premonition of failure. What would happen to the boss if he failed?
die?
Adrian couldn't quite articulate his feelings.
The amnesiac leader is very different from the previous leader. Here, he has a new name and is eager to break free from the control of Deathstroke and the League of Assassins, and strip Gotham of all traces. To this end, he is willing to become a double agent for the Francis family.
Adrian thought they hadn't spent enough time together and didn't know much about their boss's past.
—That past about Robin and the Bat Family.
...Is he investing too much emotion in the eldest brother?
Adrian didn't forget that he was a player, and that game players and game characters were not from the same world; there was a barrier between them!
Adrian didn't want to end up like those guys who were addicted to the game world, ending up in a psychiatric ward after the game ended.
What should Adrian say when the doctor asks him why he made the appointment?
He didn't want to talk about it.
*
"Don't be afraid, Winnie, I will deal with the culprit who wants to hurt you."
"Thank you, Francis. I was really scared. I was afraid I would never see you again, Francis."
Veronica, her eyes blurry with tears, lay sobbing on Francis's lap.
The sight of a beautiful woman shedding tears was stunning; even the hard-hearted Francis couldn't help but soften his heart, though only for a fleeting moment.
He wiped away Veronica's tears and patted her back gently to soothe her.
“Winnie, I’ve replaced that bodyguard captain. You don’t need to worry about him threatening your safety anymore.”
"Didn't you take a fancy to that ruby necklace a couple of days ago? I had someone buy it and it's already been delivered to your jewelry room in your bedroom. Be happy."
Francis was gentle and steady, as reliable as a mountain, and he remained calm even in the face of his wife's fear.
He handled his wife's fright in an orderly manner.
First, let your wife vent quietly, then take out expensive jewelry or other items that she was interested in but didn't get back then to distract her.
Is there anything else you're not satisfied with? Francis patted Veronica's head like he was petting a puppy.
Veronica looked up, seemingly wanting to say something but then stopped, and almost held back her tears when she noticed the big boss's action.
Is she some nobody?
What was the outcome of the bodyguard captain's case?
Who was behind her assassination attempt and how was he dealt with?
Veronica wanted to go crazy, but Francis didn't give her the chance.
“Vinnie, don’t make things difficult for me,” he sighed. “Steven is back today. Would you like to see him?”
“What do you mean, ‘see him?’ I have no relationship with him and we’re not close at all,” Veronica said with a surprised look, as if asking Francis why he was asking this, since they were talking about someone trying to assassinate her.
Francis stared intently at Veronica, but gave up when he couldn't discern anything.
"It's nothing, we're all family. It's just that the cross-shaped iris cufflinks on his sleeve look very familiar, exactly the same as the ones you designed and gave me."
Veronica was furious: "Whoever leaked my design, I'm going to settle the score with them!"
Francis's tone was ambiguous: "No need to look for him, I've already dealt with the person who leaked the information."
"That's good, otherwise I'd teach him a lesson!" Veronica's anger subsided slightly, but then returned with renewed fury:
“Francis, you’re not allowed to brush me off. You must deal with the bodyguard captain and the people behind him. They actually dared to assassinate me. They not only don’t give you face, but they don’t give me face either. I’m also going to tell my sister. If you don’t take this seriously, I’ll let my sister be the judge.”
"...There's no need to trouble Mrs. Skovich with this."
*
"Did you hear that? Let your sister be the judge. Skovic is overstepping her bounds."
Francis crossed his fingers, his indifferent expression clearly visible under the light.
He didn't expect anyone to answer; he didn't need anyone to answer.
"Let the second son in. Does he know that his son is very artistic and even uses the pseudonym Jack? Watching movies isn't enough for him; he's even imitating movie characters. Sean should know that Jack ended up drowning at sea."
...
The plot and characters are so familiar.
Peter and Adrian, who were pressed together, felt their old habit of feeling embarrassed for others as they listened to the clear sound from the bug.
Suddenly, the pager issued a call that rescued the two poor souls, but Peter and Adrian looked at each other blankly after hearing the message.
"Peter, Mrs. Veronica is looking for you."
