Chapter 7 Seeking revenge for her sister

Upon hearing this, everyone in the hall turned to look at her.

Compared to Xin Xiyao, Xie Changjing looked down on Xin Jiuwei, who was constantly pestering Qi Huaiyu, even more, and his gaze towards her was even more disdainful.

"Who doesn't know that Miss Xin is eager to marry Brother Qi? What's the point of saying that?"

"I've heard Brother Qi say long ago that Miss Xin is stupid and unfit to be a wife."

He then let out a heavy snort: "Uncle Xin is also a misfortune. His two daughters are shamelessly trying to get married, but they don't learn the proper behavior of a virtuous wife. It's really despicable."

"Xie Changjing, you...!" Xin Xiyao almost snapped the thin hairpin in her hand, but she had never encountered such obvious contempt before. Her face turned red with anger, but she couldn't say anything harsh.

Xin Jiuwei walked to her sister's side and gently squeezed her hand.

This was actually a somewhat soothing gesture. Xin Xiyao's anger turned into surprise as she looked at this younger sister with whom she hadn't had a good relationship before.

Xin Jiuwei, still smiling, asked Xie Changjing, "May I ask, Third Brother Xie, what place did you get in the lantern riddle competition last year?"

Xie Changjing was taken aback when she suddenly asked this question, and his expression immediately turned sour.

Xin Jiuwei asked with a smile, "Third Brother, don't you remember? Sister, do you remember?"

Xin Xiyao had already realized what was happening, and covered her lips with her sleeve with a polite smile, "There were so many people who came to compete in the riddle contest, I only remember the top three."

“I do have a better memory than my sister,” Xin Jiuwei said, “but I only remember a few of the finalists. Third Brother Xie, are you among them?”

Xie Changjing's expression changed, feeling somewhat embarrassed. "No, so what!"

Xin Jiuwei slowly walked up to him. "Not long ago, I heard that when the young men were drinking, they talked about my Xin family. They said that my sister, Miss Xin, is determined to find that talented man to be her husband. I wonder who in Yingzhou City can catch her eye—Xie Changjing. You said that, didn't you?"

Before Xie Changjing could speak, she added with a smile, "What talented person in this world can't even solve a riddle?"

Although Xie Changjing had just said that he was not well-educated, that was a sarcastic remark to Xin Xiyao. He had a preconceived notion and looked down on her.

But now that Xin Jiuwei is subtly mocking him for lacking talent, that's a different matter altogether.

He said angrily, "Looking at the entire Yingzhou, the most talented person is none other than Brother Qi. If Miss Xin wants to marry a talented man, then she should discuss it with her sister!"

These words were extremely harsh, and Madam Xie quickly scolded, "Jing'er, watch your words!"

Xin Jiuwei thought to herself that this person was a fool who spoke without thinking. Even though the Xin family was in decline, it was still among the nine great families in the world. Even if other high-ranking families in Yingzhou City looked down on her, who would dare to say that they were not afraid of offending a prestigious family?

Xin Jiuwei said, "According to you, Qi Huaiyu's talent is the best in the world, better than the students in the capital, and better than the tutors in the palace?"

Who would dare boast about that!

Xin Jiuwei chuckled: "There are many places in the world with outstanding people and beautiful scenery. Brother Xie loves the beauties of Yingzhou, but who said that my sister would only look for a husband in our Yingzhou?"

Her words elicited various reactions from the crowd.

Over the years, people have said that the three children of the Xin family are incapable of shouldering responsibilities, which has led other families in Yingzhou to unconsciously look down on them. But they forget that the Xin family is still a prominent family, with plenty of marriage options available outside the family. Who gave them the right to look down on them?

Xin Jiuwei looked at her sister and said, "Although it is said that a wife should be virtuous, I remember that our family has very high requirements for choosing a son-in-law. Besides, my sister is not unvirtuous, but a blind person cannot necessarily be cured."

Xie Changjing and his wife both looked grim.

Xin Jiuwei took two steps forward and gestured "please". "Even if Brother Xie doesn't like reading, he probably doesn't know that there are always mountains beyond mountains. It's getting late, so let's go back to the mansion with Auntie. Putting everything else aside, a son should be considerate."

She launched into a sarcastic remark, and Xie Changjing, who hadn't really read any books, racked his brains but couldn't come up with a rebuttal. In the end, he could only hold his breath and help Madam Xie up.

"Mother, let's go!"

After everyone left, Xin Jiuwei quickly returned to Xin Xiyao's side, "Sister, are you alright?"

"I'm fine." Xin Xiyao shook her head, staring at Xin Jiuwei, "I didn't know you were so eloquent."

Xin Jiuwei laughed and said, "Sister, you didn't say that before. You used to call me unreasonable and make a fuss even when I'm wrong."

Xin Xiyao snorted, "You still know that."

Her younger sister, having vented her anger, finally softened her tone, "It's a good thing you came. Did you know that Xie Changjing didn't want to discuss marriage, which is why you insisted on coming along?"

"I just happened to hear some rumors, it's not important. What's wrong with you today, sister?" Xin Jiuwei asked, puzzled. "You usually don't hold back when you scold me, how come you let that good-for-nothing Xie Changjing bully you like this?"

Xin Xiyao sighed, "Although he's a good-for-nothing, we have a long-standing friendship with the Xie family. Looking across the entire Yingzhou, what better marriage could there be? I originally..."

She looked somewhat downcast, her brows furrowing slightly. "I've already broken off one engagement; how can I let my father worry again?"

"Sister, what are you saying?" Xin Jiuwei said. "What I said just now was not to scare Xie Changjing. Sister, you are so good. In the future, Father and I will definitely find you a better family. Your husband must be a good man who stands tall and upright. If there is no one in Yingzhou, we will look elsewhere, even in the capital. Don't underestimate yourself!"

Xin Xiyao was surprised and somewhat shocked by her words. It took her a while to say:

"Then why did you insist that Father annul my marriage before? Did you look down on Yingzhou...?"

She had misunderstood. Xin Jiuwei quickly tried to play innocent, "I was ignorant back then, sister, please forgive me."

Seeing that Xin Xiyao remained silent, she shook her sister's hand again, "That's why I want to make it up to you, sister, and find you the best possible husband!"

Xin Xiyao finally laughed and poked Xin Jiuwei's forehead with amusement.

"How old are you? You're already making arrangements for me, and with your taste..."

She scoffed, "I wouldn't dare to compliment you."

Even though she sensed that her younger sister had changed her personality, Xin Xiyao still didn't like Qi Huaiyu.

Knowing that it was impossible to get her sister to accept her change suddenly, Xin Jiuwei wasn't in a hurry. She just said a few words and then took Xin Xiyao's hand and walked out.

Wang Qing followed behind, feeling that the two sisters hadn't gotten along so harmoniously in a long time.

To their surprise, the group had just reached the door when they heard a commotion. Xie Changjing, who was scolding the driver, became even angrier when he saw the two sisters come out and shouted that he wanted to beat the driver up.

It seems it's about the horse running away.

They were arguing noisily. Xin Xiyao glanced at them again, and Xin Jiuwei pulled her into the carriage.

"Sister, don't look, let's go home quickly."

Just as I stepped onto the rickshaw, I suddenly heard the driver shout—

"It was her! She must have let the young master's horse go!"
