Gu Xi sipped the soup, the warm liquid sliding down her throat, bringing a touch of warmth, but unable to dispel the resolute feeling in her heart.
She knew that with this victory, humanity would be filled with more hope, and everyone's strength would continue to rise.
Now, the enemy's main force has suffered a setback, the feint attack force is out of control, and the command system is in chaos, making it difficult to organize an effective second offensive in a short period of time.
The intimidating power of the Crimson Gaze, combined with the island's own defenses, gave humanity ample time to develop.
She, however, must learn to let go and do more important things.
She put down her soup bowl and said to Sun Yiming, "Yiming, please take good care of the affairs on the island. Discuss defense with Lorraine. You are good at resource allocation and personnel management."
Sun Yiming was stunned for a moment. This sounded a bit like someone giving their final instructions. "Sister Xi, what are you doing…?"
"It's nothing," Gu Xi interrupted him, her tone calm. "Just reminding you that you bear a heavy responsibility. Do a good job."
After she finished speaking, she looked at Lorraine in the corner and nodded slightly. Lorraine seemed to sense something, looked up, met her gaze, and without saying a word, seemed to understand something.
Gu Xi didn't linger and turned to walk towards an inconspicuous side passage outside the square. It led to a hidden underwater exit on the edge of the island.
Her movements were so natural that they didn't attract much attention.
Most people were still immersed in the celebratory atmosphere, but a few who had been paying attention to her saw her leaving and a hint of doubt flashed in their eyes.
As Sun Yiming watched Gu Xi disappear into the shadows of the passage, the unease in his heart grew stronger.
He abruptly put down the plate in his hand and quickly chased after him.
He arrived at the entrance to the passage, only to find it empty, with only the faint sound of the sea flowing in the distance.
"Sister Xi?!" he called out, his voice echoing in the empty corridor.
There was no response.
At this moment, Lorraine also came over and stood beside Sun Yiming, gazing into the depths of the dark passage.
“She’s gone.” Lorraine’s voice was soft, but unusually certain.
Sun Yiming turned his head sharply, glaring at Luo Lin, "You know? You know she's leaving? Where is she going? It's so dangerous outside right now, and she's all alone..."
His tone was hurried, filled with anxiety and a hint of barely perceptible reproach.
Lorraine pushed up her glasses and looked at Sun Yiming's anxious face.
"I'm just guessing. As for where she went... she probably went somewhere she felt she had to go."
"A place she had to go? What place is more important than guarding this place? This is everyone's only home! And she just left like that?"
Sun Yiming was somewhat excited, and his voice rose a few decibels.
Several curious glances drifted from the surroundings. Luo Lin frowned slightly and pulled Sun Yiming a few steps to a more secluded corner.
“Sun Yiming, calm down.” Lorraine’s voice remained steady. “Have you thought about it? What enabled us to hold out this time? It was the Future, it was Crimson Gaze, and it was Gu Xi who withstood the surprise attack from below at the crucial moment. But what about next time? Will the enemy always be this stupid? Will the effect of Crimson Gaze last forever?”
A barrage of questions cooled Sun Yiming's agitation slightly. He opened his mouth, but couldn't utter a rebuttal.
“Passive defense will never win a war,” Lorraine continued, gazing into the distance as if she could see the direction Gu Xi had gone.
“She understands this very well. The island needs temporary stability, but the future of humanity cannot be confined to this small island forever, nor can it be protected by her alone.”
He paused, his tone carrying an almost cold rationality, yet also concealing a subtle, complex emotion.
