Ye Wenyu immediately waved her hand and said, "No need, Aunt Zhang comes to clean the house every week." Since she moved in here, she has been living the life of a young lady.
Lin Tingfeng was worried that doing housework would affect her studies, so he hired a cleaning lady from the Lin family's old house to come and clean the house regularly every week, like a part-time cleaner. Every morning, Ye Wenyu would leave her messy house to go to school, and when she returned home, everything would be neat and clean. Zhang Ma was like the ancient fairy godmother, coming and going quietly, never disturbing her, yet keeping the house in perfect order, with bright and clean windows and tables.
The delivery guy looked at her and said enviously, "You even have a part-time housekeeper at home. Beautiful lady, your family is really well-off."
Ye Wenyu blushed and asked him, "Do you deliver food even in this heavy rain? Isn't that hard work?"
The rain outside seemed to be getting heavier. The "whoosh" of the rain sounded like God opening a floodgate.
The delivery guy sighed and said to her, "Yes, the rainier it is, the more orders we get, and the more money we can make. But it's really hard work. There's nothing I can do. I'm still studying, and my family isn't well-off. I have to earn my tuition myself, so I have to work hard. I'm leaving now. Thank you, beautiful lady, you're such a kind person."
What? Still studying? Ye Wenyu was struck dumb again. She stared in shock at the soaking wet delivery guy in front of her and stammered, "You just... just said you're a student."
The delivery guy smiled wryly and said, "Yes, I'm from S University." Ye Wenyu knew that S University was right next to Q University and was also a good key university.
She stared blankly at the delivery guy, a thunderous roar echoing in her heart. She seemed to see herself again, freed and struggling to earn money. She realized how hard it was to earn money alone! She had been living a good life for too long, suddenly forgetting the hardships of the past. The bitterness of hardship was pallidable, but poverty was even more so. She stared blankly at the delivery guy as he turned, walked out of the building, and took the elevator. She followed him, out of her room, out of the building, and stood at the elevator entrance like a stone pillar, staring blankly at him.
The delivery guy was a bit confused until the elevator doors opened. His face flushed, and he quickly said, "I'm leaving, thank you." Ye Wenyu seemed to wake up from a dream and didn't follow him. The elevator doors closed, and the elevator went down. She looked at the warm bread and yogurt in her hand. In the end, the delivery guy didn't take the bread and yogurt she had given him.
Looking out the corridor window, the torrential rain, like a cow's sinew, turned the gray sky a white expanse.
On such a rainy day, poverty must be even harder to bear.
Ye Wenyu returned home with her head down, her heart heavy, as if filled with lead. She stood there for a long time, motionless, staring at the large water stain in the room, like a statue.
She lost track of time until her stomach started growling loudly, at which point she finally opened the takeout Lin Tingfeng had ordered for her and started eating. Although it was takeout, it was high-end takeout, with a huge bucket of spicy lobster, along with clams, scallops, and oysters—it was practically a seafood feast. Besides, she couldn't possibly eat that much by herself, so the restaurant must have been quite upscale; the lobster was incredibly flavorful. Ye Wenyu ate slowly, taking two hours to finish the entire bucket, until her stomach felt like it was about to burst. Then she started cleaning up the trash, washing the dishes, and tidying the kitchen.
Whether eating or doing housework, she was constantly thinking about whether or not she should leave Lin Tingfeng. She even wondered if arranging for a seafood feast to be delivered to her door in the midst of a storm was Lin Tingfeng's special instruction, to make her understand the hardships of life and not act impulsively, right?
Lin Tingfeng treats everyone and everything like a chess master, making perfect plans step by step until the other party is convinced and accepts his arrangements.
Lin Tingfeng, Lin Tingfeng, you truly are a master shrewd man among men. I am no match for you, not now, not in the past, and certainly not in the future.
Ye Wenyu nestled in the soft leather sofa, snacking and watching TV. When thirsty, she would take a sip of hot black tea. The tea was from Sri Lanka; the Lin Group had its own tea plantation in Sri Lanka, and the plantation's employees would bring back the best black tea to China every year as gifts for their leaders.
After drinking the black tea Lin Tingfeng gave her, she could no longer drink any other tea.
So, what about life? Having enjoyed the comfortable and peaceful life that Lin Tingfeng brought her for so long, can she ever go back to the life of hardship she endured?
Now, compared to before, she is even less capable of enduring hardship. It's easy to go from frugality to extravagance, but difficult to go from extravagance to frugality.
Ye Wenyu couldn't stop sighing.
Just then, the doorbell rang again. She wondered who it could be. She had been soaked in the rain and felt unwell. Her joints felt like rusty chains, and it was very painful to move. She thought that if it was Lin Tingfeng, he would definitely take out his key and open the door himself. If it wasn't him, she didn't want to open the door.
The phone rang again. It was Lin Tingyue calling. Ye Wenyu was stunned. She wondered why it was Lin Tingyue. Lin Tingxuan had come to see her before, which caused Lin Tingfeng to quarrel with her. Now Lin Tingyue was also coming to see her? What storm would her arrival stir up?
The phone kept ringing, buzzing in her hand like a little animal, displaying the name "Lin Tingyue." Ye Wenyu stood there like a wooden pillar, staring blankly at the name, unable to accept the fact that Lin Tingyue was calling her anytime soon.
What was her purpose in coming to see her?
The Lin family members all seemed to be complex, each with their own hidden stories, all capable of exerting a terrible influence on her. For example, Lin Tingxuan, who took the initiative to seek her out, caused her to argue with Lin Tingfeng, making her consider leaving him. The image of the deliveryman struggling to deliver food in the pouring rain earlier, like a summer lightning bolt, reminded her, making her waver in her resolve to leave him. Under his care, she had become a hothouse flower, unable to withstand any hardship. Just as she was deeply conflicted, Lin Tingyue called.
Perhaps because Ye Wenyu hadn't answered the phone for a long time, the doorbell started ringing outside. The two sounds, cell phone ringing and doorbell ringing, rose and fell, creating quite a lively scene.
Ye Wenyu glanced at her phone, then at the direction of the door. Who was outside? It couldn't be Lin Tingyue, because Lin Tingyue didn't know where she lived. This was Lin Tingfeng's house, his property; he had the key. If it was someone else, she didn't care. Her thoughts were in turmoil; she had no interest in other people's business.
