Chapter 37 How to Spend the Holiday

(37)

Ye Wenyu pulled her thoughts back from their wandering, kite-like state, quickly finished her meal, and left the cafeteria with renewed spirits.

Before you know it, the National Day holiday is here.

On the day before the holiday, countless buses were parked outside Q University's campus. After lunch, the students dragged their suitcases and headed home in a grand procession.

None of Ye Wenyu's three roommates were from other provinces; two were from S City, and the other was from a neighboring city, so all three of them decided to go home.

As Qianqian was packing her luggage, she asked Ye Wenyu, who was sitting quietly at her desk reading, "Wenyu, aren't you going home?"

Home? Where is home? Where is home anymore?

Ye Wenyu had initially tried to remain calm, but when asked, she could only raise her head, force a smile, and say as calmly as possible, "Yes, I'm not going home. I've only been here for a month, and I won't be going back for long." As she said this, she remembered that she no longer had a home; her mother had remarried, and the house had been sold, so she could never go back. Her heart ached, and the pain felt like a thousand arrows piercing her soul.

A buzzing sound came from outside the window, the sound of suitcases rubbing against the cement floor. Because there were many students going home, the sound was loud and varied, quite a sight. Hearing this sound, Ye Wenyu felt even more distressed, as if her heart was being torn apart.

Everyone has a home, but she doesn't have one anymore!

When Qianqian heard Ye Wenyu's answer, she looked at her two roommates who were packing their luggage. They almost simultaneously recalled the scene of Ye Wenyu only eating one dish in the cafeteria. The three girls exchanged glances and confirmed once again that Ye Wenyu was an alien oddball.

Ying'er said sarcastically, "Wenyu, you really are a top student. I can't compare to you. I miss my parents after not going home for three days. I'm going back now."

Ye Wenyu sensed the sarcasm in her words, but she didn't care and forced a smile as a response.

Why tell others about your sorrows, especially when three children are standing in front of her, talking to her? They live under the pampering of their parents and have no idea that there are people separated from their loved ones, people in poverty, and people who are homeless.

Wenjia dragged her suitcase toward the door and said to the other two, "Let's go, let's go. If we don't leave now, are we going to stay in the dorm for the holiday? Hahaha, hahaha."

The three girls let out a burst of silvery laughter, dragged their suitcases away, and the dormitory fell silent, so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

Ye Wenyu initially pretended that nothing had happened, continuing to hold her pen and bury herself in reviewing her class notes. As the rumbling sound of her suitcase sliding across the floor gradually faded away, not only the dormitory but the entire campus became quiet. She lost all interest in studying, put down her pen and notebook, slowly stood up, and walked to the dormitory window.

She stiffly took out her phone, her heart feeling as heavy as lead. She opened her contacts and silently scrolled to her mother's number. A month into the new semester, she sometimes longed to call her remarried mother. She missed her, wanted to know how she was doing, but was afraid of troubling her or disturbing her happy married life.

She hadn't called her for a month. When she missed her, she would open her contacts and look at her mother's phone number, as if she had already called.

Her mother never called her.

Has she forgotten her?

Today is the National Day holiday, and all her roommates have gone home. She misses her mother terribly and wants to know if her mother is doing well after marrying that man.

They say no news is good news, let's hope so.

Ye Wenyu hesitated for a moment before finally mustering the courage to dial the number. She nervously held the phone to her ear. Because the entire campus was very quiet, she could clearly hear her own heart pounding, "thump-thump-thump, thump-thump-thump," like a drum beating in her chest.

Hope mingled with despair. Like a homeless little animal, she longed for a little bit of warm shelter, hoping that there were still people in this world who thought of her and loved her.

The call connected, and the "beep-beep" sound rang out. One beep, two beeps, Ye Wenyu silently counted. The reason she lost control of her emotions today and dialed her mother's number was simply to prove to herself and to the world that she had a family, that she had a mother, and that she was a child who was cared for and loved.

After the phone rang seven times, it finally connected. "Xiaoyu—" came her mother's loving and apologetic voice.

"Mom—" Ye Wenyu called out, tears streaming down her face, blurring her vision.

She quickly reached out and wiped away her tears, trying to calm herself down as if nothing had happened, and asked with concern into the phone, "Mom, are you doing well?"

Zhang Susu hesitated for a moment before softly saying, "Okay, he's very good to me. We're already married, we've registered our marriage, and we've bought a new house. Although we have a twenty-year mortgage, it's bigger and brighter than our old house. I like it very much, and he likes it too. You know, owning your own house in S City is a very impressive thing!" Her tone was filled with pride and satisfaction. Then she added with contentment, "His two children are also very good to me. They call me Aunt Zhang. Although they don't call me Mom, their attitude is very good. I'm already satisfied. After all, the children aren't my own. It will take time for them to truly accept me from the bottom of their hearts. I will wait for them to accept me—"

When Zhang Susu talked about her new home, her words flowed endlessly, like a broken thread.

Ye Wenyu listened quietly, and her originally uneasy heart gradually relaxed. As long as her mother was doing well, that was all that mattered.
