Chapter 241
The SUV drove on the highway, its headlights cutting through the thick darkness and illuminating the winding road ahead.
The streetlights on both sides of the road rushed past at intervals, casting flickering shadows on the car. Occasionally, an oncoming vehicle would pass by, its bright light causing Jiang You to squint, before the car was plunged back into darkness.
She clung tightly to Qiu Yun, curled up in the corner of the car seat, not daring to let go.
The cabin was dimly lit with ambient lighting, the green light from the dashboard intertwining with the night outside the window, creating a very quiet and lonely atmosphere.
She didn't know how much time had passed when she heard someone named Eugene answer a phone call.
Jiang You couldn't hear what was being said on the other end of the line because his phone was connected to a Bluetooth headset, but judging from the constant stream of profanities coming from Eugene's mouth, it wasn't good news.
Sure enough, he hung up the phone and spoke in the quiet car, his tone unpleasant: "The situation has changed. You'll be staying with me for now, and our communication devices will be disconnected."
Perhaps good fortune had never been on her side. Jiang You panicked for a moment, but was quickly calmed down by Qiu Yun.
I've gotten used to bad luck, so I have this feeling that I knew it was going to happen.
The car stopped, and Jiang You followed Eugene out of the car and got into another empty car. After driving for a short while, they changed to another car.
“Tsk, there are police cars ahead, they’re checking people,” Eugene said, then opened the car door and got out.
Afraid of being left behind, she quickly got off the bus.
Because of the checkpoint, the roads are all jammed with cars.
People stuck in the back of the car got out to see what was going on, and it got quite a scene.
Eugene's car was stuck in the middle, so he got out and walked to the back.
He looked young and delicate, but he was over 1.85 meters tall. His long legs allowed him to take big strides and walk fast, and he quickly distanced himself from Jiang You.
Jiang You didn't dare to run after them, otherwise it would attract too much attention and bring the police there.
They didn't dare to look up, lest their abilities activate and attract strange people.
With her head down, she stumbled in her haste and was about to fall face-first to the ground when a warm hand grabbed her arm and pulled her up.
“Hey, I’m telling you, woman,” Eugene said, his brow furrowed as he looked at her.
He released her arm, his delicate, baby-faced expression turning hostile. "You can't even walk properly without tripping. How useless are you? You might as well just die."
She wasn't upset about being scolded; she was just relieved that Eugene had returned and she hadn't lost him. Jiang You breathed a sigh of relief, lowered her eyes, and whispered, "I'm sorry."
Eugene was astonished, seemingly having never encountered such a weak and easily bullied person before. He stared at her with wide eyes, speechless for a long time.
There was no movement from the other side for a long time, so Jiang You cautiously raised her eyes and saw Eugene's gaze sweep over her face and then move away.
That look was all too familiar... She pursed her slightly dry lips and lowered her eyes again.
"Keep up," Eugene said, and walked on, his steps still long and fast.
This time, Jiang You didn't follow behind; instead, he reached out and grasped Jiang You's large hand.
Eugene seemed to have been electrocuted, and angrily shouted, "What are you doing? Let go of me!"
He looked like a chaste man who had been taken advantage of.
“You’re walking too fast for me to keep up with. Here’s what I’m doing,” Jiang You raised their clasped hands and shook them, then lowered his eyes, “that way I won’t lose you.”
“You woman,” Eugene said sarcastically, still sharp-tongued, “every time I think you’re trash, you manage to lower the bar for what I consider trash.”
Jiang You remained silent, acting as if he were a dead pig unafraid of boiling water.
It was like punching cotton; Eugene choked and remained silent for a few seconds.
The unique touch of a woman on his hands made him feel a little hot.
He held back for a moment, then said with a sour face, "For the sake of money, I'll walk slower, okay? Fine, whatever, I don't care."
Eugene left with those words and walked on. He didn't shake off her hand, but he walked very fast. Jiang You struggled to keep up and almost tripped again.
He paused, made a few sarcastic remarks, and then slowed down considerably.
After leaving the highway, Eugene somehow got another car, and the two of them got back on the road.
“Those cops aren’t after me,” Eugene said gleefully as he drove, “they’re after you.”
