Chapter 13 Clam Digging

She instructed Gu Huanhuan to start the fire, and then placed the round pancakes one by one into the pot.

Gu Lili specifically instructed Gu Huanhuan that the heat should not be too high, otherwise it would burn.

Gu Huanhuan was stunned by Gu Lili's actions.

My sister, who is usually very frugal, scooped up so much flour—enough for almost ten days' worth of food for them.

And with so much pork cracklings added, it must smell incredibly delicious!

As the temperature in the pot rose, the aroma wafted out of the kitchen.

The two little gluttons working outside had their eyes glued to the kitchen, unable to resist looking into it.

"Erniu, Sigou, wash your hands and eat!"

As soon as Gu Lili's voice rang out, the two of them hastily washed their hands and rushed in.

His eyes widened when he saw the coarse flatbread on the table.

While baking the flatbread, Gu Lili scooped in some lard, and the flatbread was baked until golden brown on both sides, sizzling with oil.

"Wow, sister, is it Chinese New Year today? They're eating pancakes!" Gu Sigou's mouth was practically watering.

Gu Erniu was also very tempted, but he had more concerns than anything else.

They only have so much food; at this rate, I don't know if they can last until the next harvest.

"Eat up," Gu Lili urged the three of them.

Gu Huanhuan and Gu Sigou took a piece and started eating.

It's crispy when you bite into it, and with the addition of salt, it's absolutely delicious.

Gu Erniu hesitated to make a move, and Gu Lili noticed his cautiousness.

Gu Lili immediately picked it up and took a big bite. Seeing this, Erniu's concerns were dispelled.

My sister, who is always frugal, ate it all, so there's no problem.

After taking that one bite, Gu Erniu felt as if his life had been elevated.

This was the most filling and satisfying meal the three children had ever had.

They originally thought that eating white rice was enough to be happy.

Unexpectedly, the pancakes brought them even more happiness.

For Gu Lili, the pancake was far too rough.

This coarse noodle still contains wheat bran and germ, which Gu Lili, who is used to refined noodles, finds a bit harsh on her throat.

However, seeing her three younger siblings eating so heartily, Gu Lili was still very happy.

The group ate until their mouths were greasy and their hands were sticky.

After finishing the meal, the wheat that was soaked the night before should be put into a sieve and then sprouted.

This thing can't come into contact with oil, or it'll be ruined.

Gu Lili specifically instructed the group to wash the oil off their hands with shampoo.

Gu Lili found a sieve and carefully scooped up the wheat.

He then instructed Gu Erniu to find some straw to cover the wheat.

The weather in early spring is still a bit cold, which is not conducive to wheat germination.

Gu Lili found some wooden boards to cover the wheat, still worried that rats would come and ruin it.

After doing all this, Gu Lili led the three of them to the field to weed.

Wild grass is already sprouting in the fields, competing with the crops for nutrients.

These grains were originally unimproved varieties, so the yields were not high.

There were no pesticides or anything, so the farmers relied on their hard work to weed.

There aren't many weeds in the field yet, and Gu Erniu brought his younger siblings to pull them out yesterday, so they were almost done by noon.

The weeds in this field grow very fast, so I need to come and pull them out every day, otherwise they'll quickly overgrow.

When the group returned home, Gu Lili took the shepherd's purse she had found while weeding and washed it.

I made a shepherd's purse soup and ate it with the leftover flatbread from breakfast. That made for a meal.

There are still many things to do after lunch.

Gu Erniu took Gu Sigou to the mountain to find firewood, while Gu Lili took Gu Huanhuan to the beach.

Gu Erniu thought Gu Lili wanted to go to the beach to collect fish, so he just told the two of them to be careful in the water before taking Sigou out.

Gu Lili locked the door, picked up a bucket and two sturdy wooden sticks, and led Gu Huanhuan toward the seaside.

Even though you can see the coastline right from your doorstep, it's actually quite a long walk.

Following the stream is quite fast; it takes less than half an hour to get there.

As soon as you reach the beach, your view opens up dramatically.

Looking into the distance, it stretches as far as the eye can see.

She grabbed Gu Huanhuan and ran towards the beach.

In her past life, she loved the seaside and always dreamed of living by the sea. She never expected that this wish would come true in this way.

Yesterday, she subtly inquired with Uncle Dazhu about what country this was.

Uncle Dazhu said it was the Southern Yue Kingdom, a place name that Gu Lili had never seen in history.

This means that Gu Lili has traveled to an unknown country.

Fortunately, the countries here are not too different from the world they came from.

Looking at the landscape, she couldn't think of any place here that resembled any place from her previous life.

However, since we're already here, we might as well make the best of it.

The beach here is covered with golden sand and seashells.

For Gu Lili, it was truly beautiful.

The people here seem to be too busy working in the fields to appreciate the beautiful scenery.

Seashells are of little use to them, but some people still pick them up and string them together as decorations; Gu Lili's family also has some.

It's not really the busy farming season yet, and there are still teenagers like Gu Lili on the beach.

They would also take advantage of their free time to look for any stranded fish.

Some of the more skilled fishermen use sharpened pieces of wood to catch fish in shallow water.

These are places where you can enjoy a nice meal at the beach when you're not busy.

Gu Lili noticed with her sharp eyes that there were air holes in the sand.

She picked up the stick in her hand and pried it up, revealing a white clam.

"Beep, clams, five coins a pound, five coins a pound."

The system's voice rang in Gu Lili's mind.

This delighted Gu Lili. The price was about the same as shepherd's purse, but clams were heavier.

You don't need much to make a pound.

Gu Lili observed that none of them picked up the clams on the ground; perhaps they didn't know how to eat them.

That means all the clams on this beach belong to her.

Thinking this, Gu Lili quickly called Gu Huanhuan to search with her.

Gu Huanhuan was puzzled. "Sister, you can't eat this. It's all sand."

They used to come here to eat this when they were starving.

This thing not only fills your mouth with mud and sand when you eat it, but it also has a fishy smell.

Who would eat this if they weren't forced to?

"I'll teach you how to eat it when we get back. Hurry up and find it," Gu Lili instructed.

Although Gu Huanhuan didn't quite understand what her sister meant, she still obediently did as she was told.

Because no one was digging, Gu Lili and Gu Huanhuan filled half a bucket in no time.

While Gu Huanhuan was digging, Gu Lili quietly went to the side and sold some of the produce.

Gu Huanhuan was puzzled. She and her sister felt they had dug a lot, but the bucket was never full.
