Chapter 40 The Reasons for the Argument
Zhou Xiao went to confront the clerk in a fit of rage, only to bump into Pei Jiuyan. She couldn't help but say, "Pei Jiuyan, you're a fucking beast."
“Zhou Xiao, for Zhao Zhao’s sake, I’ll let it go. You should stop now.”
Pei Jiuyan had recovered from the blow he had just suffered, so naturally he couldn't let Zhou Xiao scold him anymore. He would only bow down to one person in his life.
"Pah!" Zhou Xiao was unmoved. "You still have the nerve to mention Zhao Zhao? How dare you? Why did you tell Wenshu about Zhao Zhao's parents? Do you want Zhao Zhao to die?"
"What?" Pei Jiuyan was even more agitated than Zhou Xiao had expected. He grabbed Zhou Xiao's hand and asked, "Zhao Zhao knows?"
"Why do you think she fell down the stairs? It's all because of your lover."
Normally, Zhou Xiao was terrified of Pei Jiuyan, but now she couldn't care less; all she could think about was that Yun Zhaozhao knew.
Actually, it was partly her fault. Zhao Zhao's voice was clearly off that day, and she arrived looking disheveled. She drank a lot with Zhao Zhao, and Zhao Zhao said a lot, mostly about how Pei Jiuyan bullied her. At the time, her older brother and Wen Fei were on the phone, and Wen Fei overheard Zhao Zhao's words. That's why the Yun family decided to come back at the last minute, but then the accident happened on the way.
The only people who knew about this were her, her older brother, and Pei Jiuyan. They tacitly concealed everything, not wanting Zhaozhao to take the blame upon herself. Who knew that this beast Pei Jiuyan would actually tell the document about it?
Is this an attempt to force Zhao Zhao to her death?
Pei Jiuyan didn't have time to question why the clerk knew about this; he hurriedly ran to Yun Zhaozhao's ward.
He hadn't planned to see Yun Zhaozhao so soon. Too much had happened today, and he wanted to give them both some time to cool down before explaining everything to Yun Zhaozhao once she was less angry.
Things weren't as she thought. He never used her; it was love at first sight. He had been moved by that fleeting glance back then.
He originally planned to wait until she was older before getting to know her. Later, when his family had a crisis, he could have asked other families for help, but he ultimately chose the Yun family, not for revenge, but simply because he wanted to see Yun Zhaozhao.
Pushing open the door, Yun Zhaozhao's expression was much calmer than he had imagined. His words of comfort caught in his throat, and Pei Jiuyan suddenly didn't know how to start the conversation.
Yun Zhaozhao looked at Pei Jiuyan with unprecedented calmness, and her first words were: "Now I know it wasn't you who laid a hand on my parents."
Pei Jiuyan felt a bitter taste in his mouth; he didn't want to prove his innocence in this way.
“Zhaozhao…”
He had barely opened his mouth when Yun Zhaozhao interrupted him: "Pei Jiuyan, do you know why I was so sad that day?"
Pei Jiuyan was taken aback. Yun Zhaozhao had argued with him so many times in the past year that he couldn't recall for a moment why she had been unhappy that time.
"I've been too busy to spend time with you?"
He asked tentatively, "This is the reason why Yun Zhaozhao makes such a fuss."
Yun Zhaozhao gave a slight twitch of her lips and said calmly, "Actually, I went to your company that night."
Pei Jiuyan was taken aback. She subconsciously wanted to ask him why she hadn't seen him, but then she remembered the day she was stopped, and her expression darkened.
"It's not what you think. I didn't go up. I saw you as soon as I got off the bus. I was so happy to share the porridge I had been cooking for so long with you, but I saw you getting on the bus with a woman."
Pei Jiuyan's expression changed upon hearing this. Just as he was about to speak, Yun Zhaozhao said, "It was too dark, and I couldn't see clearly. I thought I was seeing things, so I tried to see clearly and chased after her as fast as I could. I don't even know how far I ran, and I didn't even know I could run so fast."
Until she fell and could no longer get up.
Actually, she had seen the document at that time, but only glanced at it briefly, and she wasn't sure.
"I called you many times afterward, but you never answered. In the end, I took a taxi to the Zhou family's house..."
Pei Jiuyan knew nothing of this; he didn't even know that Yun Zhaozhao had cooked porridge for him.
He wanted to tell Yun Zhaozhao that the person that day was indeed Wenshu, and Wenshu hadn't just returned recently. They had been in contact before, but there was nothing between them. He and Wenshu were just using each other because Wenshu had now climbed up to a big shot.
He didn't answer Yun Zhaozhao's call because the signal was blocked where he went, and his phone never rang.
Later, when he came out, he saw a screen full of phone calls and received news that something had happened to the Yun family. He rushed to the hospital and saw Yun Zhaozhao in a disheveled state. He assumed that she had gotten into this state because she heard that something had happened to her family.
He wanted to explain, but words seemed so pale and powerless at that moment.
If he had been more honest and hadn't lied, would none of this have happened?
“I should have given up back then, but I was still deceiving myself.”
Yun Zhaozhao gave a mocking smile. She had been swayed by Pei Jiuyan's words back then: "Zhaozhao, Mom, Dad, and my older brother are gone, but you still have me. I will stay with you for the rest of my life and love you for the rest of my life."
She thought she should trust Pei Jiuyan. Maybe she had misjudged him that day. That person wasn't a clerk. He had left because he had something to do, and there was nothing wrong with him.
In the end, it was all fake; everything was a lie.
"Zhaozhao, don't say that."
Pei Jiuyan panicked: "Zhaozhao, I can explain all of this. I've never done anything to wrong you. I didn't take advantage of you, and it wasn't revenge. What my mother said is all lies. Listen to me, Zhaozhao, you and I..."
Before he could finish speaking, Yun Zhaozhao interrupted, "It's not important anymore."
The truth or the falsehood doesn't matter anymore; she can't get over her own conscience. There's no possibility between her and Pei Jiuyan.
"Pei Jiuyan, you should leave."
After Yun Zhaozhao finished speaking, she closed her eyes, looking as if she didn't want to communicate anymore.
Pei Jiuyan's throat bobbed, and his eyes reddened. After a long while, he finally asked, "Zhaozhao, where's the porridge?"
Where's the porridge you cooked for me?
Yun Zhaozhao didn't expect Pei Jiuyan to be thinking of this at this moment. She thought for a moment and said, "Let's pour it out. I can't remember."
After a long while, she heard footsteps leaving. Yun Zhaozhao did not open her eyes, but there seemed to be a glint of tears in the corner of her eye.
The next day, Zhou Xiao was not the only one in her hospital room; Wen Jingyu was also there.
Wen Jingyu looked at her with heartache: "How did it get like this? Don't worry, once my hand is healed, I'll get revenge for you."
Yun Zhaozhao smiled and said, "Come on, you'd just be throwing your life away."
Zhou Xiao and Wen Jingyu exchanged a glance. Yun Zhaozhao was in a much better mood than they had expected. Seeing their reaction, Yun Zhaozhao smiled and said, "What? Did you think I would make a scene, cry, and threaten suicide? Don't worry, I won't. I'll take good care of myself."
The people who doted on and loved her are gone; she has to love herself so that her family can be at ease.
One sentence brought tears to Zhou Xiao and Wen Jingyu's eyes. Zhou Xiao, with red eyes, said:
"Baby! I'm so sorry, it's all my fault. I wish I had gone outside with you that day."
"What nonsense are you talking about? Why do you always try to take the blame? What does it have to do with you? It's all that scumbag and bitch's fault. Let's not fight amongst ourselves."
Zhou Xiao hadn't expected that it would be Yun Zhaozhao who comforted her in the end, and couldn't help but smile.
"By the way, I need your help with something."
She didn't believe her father would do such a thing; she couldn't let him die with a bad reputation.
