Chapter 37 [VIP]
Chapter Summary: "You saw Su Wenjin?"
The shop assistants were also worried about Xu Tianzhou's safety. When they heard Ni Zhenzhen say "break down the door," they immediately went to find any usable tools.
Someone brought over a fire axe, more than half a meter long, painted red.
Everyone chimed in, saying, "This is good..."
The man told the others to step back, and he stood with his feet apart in front of the door, about to swing the axe with all his might, when the door opened with a "click".
Everyone gasped in surprise, and Xu Tianzhou was equally astonished. Several people were standing in front of the door, and one of them was holding an axe.
He immediately frowned. "What's going on?"
A group of people asked anxiously, "Are you alright?"
What could possibly be wrong with me?
Xu Tianzhou looked past everyone and landed on Ni Zhenzhen. She was staring at him without moving, the steam rising from the kitchen behind her veiling her face, her eyes wet, as if she had just gone through a period of torment.
Xu Tianzhou feigned surprise, "Why are you here?"
Seeing him standing there unharmed, Ni Zhenzhen almost burst into tears, but with so many people around, she held back again and again, and finally let a single tear fall silently.
That tear merged into the vast ocean hidden in Ni Zhenzhen's heart, and also stirred up a storm in Xu Tianzhou's heart.
He walked over, cupped her face in his hands, and gently wiped away the remaining tear stains on her chin with his thumb. His voice was soft as he asked, "Why are you crying?"
Ni Zhenzhen bit her lip and remained silent. After everyone had left, she threw herself into Xu Tianzhou's arms. She buried her head in Xu Tianzhou's chest, greedily inhaling his scent, so much so that her voice was muffled, "You scared me to death."
These four words were also what Xu Tianzhou wanted to say. His heart was still pounding violently. No one knew what kind of fear and despair he had experienced when he stood on the edge of the cliff.
Xu Tianzhou hugged her, gently stroking Ni Zhenzhen's back, as if comforting her, and also as if comforting himself, "It's alright..."
Ni Zhenzhen looked up, sniffed pitifully, and asked, "Why didn't you open the door?"
What else could it be?
Of course, it was because he was in a meeting upstairs and didn't notice the message on his phone until Ni Zhenzhen called him. Only then did he see the clerk say that Ni Zhenzhen had arrived, and he hurriedly left a group of executives to rush over here.
He prayed silently the whole way. Those two minutes in the elevator were probably the longest time of his life. He considered countless possibilities and prepared for the worst. Fortunately, it was all a false alarm, and he did not lose her.
Xu Tianzhou stroked her head and said casually, "She accidentally fell asleep."
This was hardly a clever excuse, but Ni Zhenzhen had no time to discern the irrationality of it, because she was quickly drawn to the faint scent emanating from Xu Tianzhou's suit collar.
She leaned in and took a careful sniff, saying, "It smells so good."
It was a very special scent. The reason it was special was not because it was rare, but because it didn't smell like the laundry detergent I usually use.
Xu Tianzhou was completely unaware that something was being torn open, and asked with a smile, "What smells like that? Rice noodles?"
"No, that's not right." Ni Zhenzhen grabbed his tie with one hand and pointed at him with the other. "Oh, I know, you're not opening the door because you're hiding a woman inside?"
Xu Tianzhou was both amused and exasperated; he had never been guilty about anything in this regard. Xu Tianzhou graciously stepped aside, gesturing for him to proceed, "You'll see when you see for yourself."
Ni Zhenzhen was only joking. She walked into the office and pretended to look around. The office doubled as a storage room; it was very small, and a quick glance revealed everything.
There was really nothing to see, so Ni Zhenzhen finally focused her attention on the metal cabinet opposite her.
Xu Tianzhou asked, "Do you want me to open it and show it to you?"
"Do you think I'm stupid?" The metal cabinet has glass doors. "You can't hide anyone here."
She sat down in the chair, looked around, and then her eyes lit up as if she had discovered something extraordinary.
"So that's where it was hidden," Ni Zhenzhen said, pointing to the phone on the table. "It's so pretty."
The phone lit up, displaying a photo of Ni Zhenzhen.
"How can you praise yourself like that?" It was clearly a reprimand, but he delivered it with a cloying sweetness. "What brings you here?"
"The company sent me to Xinda to pick up the documents."
“Xinda?” Xu Tianzhou remembered that Su Wenjin had mentioned that Xinda was interested in cooperating with a financial leasing company, and it turned out that they had chosen the company where Ni Zhenzhen worked.
He leaned against his desk, smiling knowingly, and at first glance seemed no different from the other gossipers chasing after her. "You saw Su Wenjin?"
“How could that be?” Ni Zhenzhen leaned back in her chair and spun around slightly. “I didn’t even see his back, but I did see his assistant.”
Xu Tianzhou nodded absentmindedly, then casually asked, "How's Xinda?"
"It's great." Ni Zhenzhen was so busy with work that she didn't pay much attention to anything else, but one thing left a deep impression on her: "The coffee in the break room is really good. Next time someone adds coffee beans, I'll definitely check what brand it is and buy some for you to try."
However, this is a bit troublesome, as it requires preparing a lot of things. It would be much better if we could just bring a cup directly.
Ni Zhenzhen voiced her thoughts, looking up at him and asking in a low voice, "It shouldn't count as stealing, right?"
Xu Tianzhou finally couldn't hold back.
"why are you laughing?"
Xu Tianzhou quickly suppressed his smile and said decisively, "It doesn't count."
These are all his own things, how can it be considered stealing? He secretly made a mental note of this, and next time he went to a meeting, he would definitely ask what brand of coffee beans they were.
"You haven't eaten yet, have you? I'll make you something."
"OK."
A short while later, Xu Tianzhou brought in a bowl of rice noodles he had made himself. Unlike other standardized products, this bowl of rice noodles had extra side dishes, all of which Ni Zhenzhen loved to eat.
After finishing her meal, Ni Zhenzhen chatted with Xu Tianzhou for a while before reluctantly leaving.
She returned the way she came, and as she entered the elevator, she was unexpectedly struck by a delicate fragrance.
Scents are something that are difficult to describe in words and hard to form an impression in the mind. Only when you smell them again will they evoke a person's memory.
There were several people in the elevator, men and women. One of them was so glamorous that it seemed a bit deliberate. After they got out of the elevator, the group gradually dispersed, and the smell completely disappeared.
Su Wenjin's secretary stepped out of the elevator and asked her colleague who had just returned, "Who was that person?"
My colleague laughed and said, "Flora, the company behind the financial leasing company, isn't even a foreign company, yet it insists on having an English name."
"Their boss came from a foreign company."
"No wonder..."
The secretary felt that Flora looked familiar, as if she had seen her somewhere before, but she couldn't quite place her.
Ni Zhenzhen spent a few days working at Xinda and returned to the company with the compiled materials. Li Xiang glanced at them casually but didn't seem very satisfied, so he asked her to go back to Xinda to supplement some materials.
Ni Zhenzhen had never been involved in the leasing business before and didn't know what to add, but no matter whether she asked Li Xiang or her colleagues, she was always dismissed with a simple "look for yourself".
Ni Zhenzhen knew that she couldn't rely on others for work, so she had to flip through books and reorganize everything at the same time.
Ni Zhenzhen stayed at Xinda for a few more days, which unexpectedly caught the attention of Su Wenjin.
He happened to be passing by that day and saw a stranger through the glass wall of the conference room. The person was standing in front of the photocopies, and perhaps because he was a little tired, he leaned his upper body slightly forward and lifted his feet.
Su Wenjin stopped and looked around for a moment, then asked, "Is this new here?"
The assistant replied, "It's from Jinzu; they're here to make copies of the documents."
"Just have someone prepare it and send it over, why go through all this trouble?"
"Actually..." the assistant looked hesitant, then whispered something to Su Wenjin, "It's like this..."
It turns out that Li Xiang and the person in charge of ship leasing had a long-standing feud. He suspected that the other side suddenly switched Ni Zhenzhen over to gather information so that they could use more cooperation agreements to put him on the defensive at the opening ceremony. That's why they sent Ni Zhenzhen away.
"He asked me to keep an eye on things for him, but I didn't think it was a big deal, so I didn't tell you."
Su Wenjin snorted coldly and said contemptuously, "He's a vice president, yet he does this kind of thing."
The person in the conference room remained in the same position and never left his sight, but the assistant's words unexpectedly added a sense of vulnerability that was hard to describe, like a rose swaying in the wind, easily broken.
Su Wenjin felt a pang of pity and instructed her assistant, "Invite her to come and have dinner with us."
The assistant was somewhat surprised and hesitated for a moment before saying, "Okay."
Su Wenjin arrived at the staff canteen and sat down in the area reserved for senior executives. After a short while, he saw his assistant come over, and he was all alone.
"She said she was afraid of delaying her work here and wanted to return the documents as soon as possible, so she wouldn't be coming to eat."
Didn't you say I was here?
The assistant paused for a moment, then said, "I did."
"..." Su Wenjin withdrew her gaze and said calmly, "Let's eat."
Su Wenjin had a dinner engagement that evening. He got into his car in front of the main entrance of Huijing Center. As the car turned a corner in front of the building, an elegant and familiar figure came into his view.
She was wearing a white ribbon blouse and dark trousers, and unlike in the office, because it was still early spring, she had added an ice-blue trench coat.
Su Wenjin blurted out, "Stop for a moment."
The car stopped, and the assistant saw it too.
Su Wenjin raised her chin. "Go ask her if she needs a ride."
"good."
The car doors opened and closed, creating a brief and chaotic commotion.
The woman was unaware of anyone approaching. She continued looking at her phone and gazing into the distance, the wind whipping up the hem of her trench coat and scattering her hair in disarray. She raised a hand to tuck her hair behind her ear, and the gold bracelet that happened to be visible shimmered in the afterglow of the setting sun, its light as captivating as her own.
The assistant went over, and she was surprised for a moment before smiling politely. Su Wenjin subconsciously glanced at the empty seat next to him, and when he looked up again, the assistant had already returned.
“She said…”
The assistant's words were stopped by Su Wenjin's gesture. Although he didn't know what she said, the fact that only the assistant had returned was enough to explain everything.
Su Wenjin looked ahead expressionlessly and said, "Let's go."
The car started slowly, and Su Wenjin deliberately avoided looking in that direction. He suddenly felt a bit stuffy in the car, and when he raised his hand to his collar, he realized he wasn't wearing a tie. He loosened his collar a little more, but the stuffy feeling still lingered.
Being rejected twice by the same person on the same day is a rare experience in Su Wenjin's otherwise smooth life.
Is this a case of playing hard to get? Right?
After an unknown amount of time, Su Wenjin finally found a not-too-cruel possibility, a way to deceive herself: "Does she still not know her situation?"
"You probably didn't expect that," the assistant replied.
Su Wenjin turned to look out the window. It was already dark. A mocking smile suddenly appeared in the interplay of light and shadow on the car window. It was unclear whether he was mocking himself or someone else.
"Is it because you didn't expect it, or are you overthinking it?"
