Chapter Sixty-Seven: Being Assigned a Mission

It was during working hours, and considering the incident with the Xiao family last time, so many police officers were mobilized and the deployment took so long, but in the end, nothing was found, which made the criminal investigation team lose face. Xu Moran couldn't hide in the break room to make a long private call, so he wanted to talk to Jiang Moli quickly and explain what was going on before ending the call.

"Lily." Xu Moran spoke quickly, urging Jiang Moli, who was still stammering and hesitant on the other end of the phone, "What happened? Tell me quickly, I'm at work."

Jiang Moli swallowed hard and said, "Ranran, here's what happened. I have a friend who is married and has a child, but... she accidentally got drunk, and when she woke up, she found herself lying next to a strange man. What do you think she should do now?"

What, one of her friends?

Given Xu Moran's relationship with her, how could she not know how many friends she had? She was referring to herself, but just to save face, she randomly picked a friend.

Jiang Moli is a shy person. Since she lied to Xu Moran that she was a friend of hers, it means that she didn't want Xu Moran to know that the person in the story was her.

As her best friend, Xu Moran would naturally consider her feelings.

After listening to Jiang Moli's story, he calmly and seriously told her, "You took advantage of the woman's drunkenness and forced yourself on her. Tell your friend to call the police right now!"

Jiang Moli lowered her already low voice even further, "But she didn't resist. If we call the police, wouldn't that be considered rape?"

Xu Moran sensed the hesitation in her tone and felt angry. She had already been taken advantage of, yet she was still worried about the person who had taken advantage of her.

No wonder the Zheng family dared to bully her like this; she herself has no backbone at all!

"Of course it's rape!" Xu Moran's tone became stern. She wanted Jiang Moli to have a basic awareness of protecting herself. "Lili, go tell your friend that regardless of whether she resisted or not, as long as that man took advantage of her while she was drunk and had sex with her, it was rape!"

Jiang Moli said weakly, "But, in this matter, she was in the wrong first. She was the one who pulled down the man's pants first, she was the one who cried and shouted, not letting the man leave. She was wrong from the start..."

Xu Moran's anger flared up instantly. "Regardless of whether you were in the wrong first, according to current Chinese law, it only protects women whether they have been violated."

There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone.

Xu Moran was so angry that his liver hurt. He took a deep breath and said, "Lily, what I just said was just my personal opinion. Whether or not to call the police is up to your friend."

A muffled "hmm" came from Jiang Moli on the other end of the phone. Xu Moran was both amused and annoyed by her, so he added fuel to the fire, "Actually, if we really listen to what you just said, your friend is married with children, and she went out drinking in the middle of the night. It must be that her husband is not treating her well, or her husband is having an affair and she found out, so she felt wronged and did that. Besides, she was the one who pulled down his pants first, and she was the one who cried and wouldn't let him leave. If we really think about it, she didn't lose out. If it really doesn't work out, just let it go. Anyway, we are all adults. If we sleep together, we sleep together. As long as we take precautions afterwards, it's fine."

Jiang Moli muttered something very quietly. Although Xu Moran didn't hear it clearly, she didn't ask. Knowing Jiang Moli as she did, it must have been something hesitant and contradictory.

Jiang Moli is a mother now, and no one can help her forever. She has to make many decisions on her own.

Xu Moran had just hung up the phone when another call came in—it was from her home landline.

Fearing that Xu Ye might have an emergency, she answered her phone almost as soon as it rang.

On the other end of the phone, Xu Ye's voice was as pleasant as ever, with a hint of joy, "Ranran, when are you coming back?"

Xu Moran wasn't annoyed at all. Instead, she patiently said, "I just started working. If I don't have anything to do at noon, I'll go back and have lunch with you."

She knew Xu Ye was picky, and if she made him eat another twelve-yuan Lanzhou beef noodle dish, he might protest by going on a hunger strike.

Xu Ye was clearly pleased with Xu Moran's suggestion to come back and have lunch with him. He didn't pester Xu Moran with any more small talk and hung up the phone quite readily.

As soon as Xu Moran stepped out of the break room, a colleague called out to her, "Xiao Xu, Captain Sun wants you to go to his office."

Xu Moran responded and went directly to Sun Xingchao's office.

Sun Xingchao's office was right next to the ordinary police officers' office. Xu Moran walked over quickly. The door to Sun Xingchao's office was ajar. Xu Moran knocked lightly, and the door opened automatically.

She had intended to go in immediately, but suddenly, she remembered what the cleaning lady had told her. Although, given the cleaning lady's personality, she was sure she had exaggerated, at least one thing was certain: the incident had definitely happened.

It turns out that their Captain Sun, who seems like a rough northerner, is actually quite sensitive in matters of the heart; she must have a story to tell.

He gently knocked on the open door. "Captain Sun."

Sun Xingchao's voice came from inside the office, sounding somewhat weary, "Come in."

Xu Moran took a deep breath before going in. Deep down, she was a little afraid of Sun Xingchao. It wasn't the kind of fear of a person or thing, but more because he was her superior.

It's like how elementary school students are generally afraid of their teachers.

Xu Moran stood in front of the desk, facing Sun Xingchao at attention. Just as he was about to salute, Sun Xingchao interrupted him, gesturing with his eyes not to make the atmosphere so serious.
