Cao An raised his hand and flicked her forehead. "You're really getting bolder and bolder! You can even make an appointment with someone like that! What will you say if someone asks you where your food comes from?"
Xia Youyou covered her forehead, her eyes reddened with pain. She pouted in grievance, "I don't think he's a bad guy."
"Will the word 'bad' be written on a bad person's face?" Cao An was so angry that he almost laughed. He glanced at someone coming and pointed at her red mole with his finger. He stood up and greeted the person, ignoring her.
In the evening, Cao An returned home early. The girl had been scolded by him at noon, and when she left, she ignored him completely, leaving him unable to concentrate on work for the entire afternoon.
Xia Youyou was only a little upset for a moment, but when she got home, she was fine, helping her mother make clothes. Liu Hui was very skillful, and she made her a whole set of clothes in just two days. She put them on right away, looking at her new clothes happily.
"Mom, you can definitely become a tailor in the future!"
Cao An also heard this and pushed the door open. The girl's thin frame, dressed in a bright red jacket, made her look a bit like a city girl. In those days, everyone wore gray, and the only decent thing was a flowery cotton jacket. This girl, on the other hand, had her mother make a jacket with a double-breasted front, making her look like a young girl from the Republican era.
The coat was a bright red, with a fringe of white fur sewn around the collar and cuffs—I wonder if it was animal fur? She wore black trousers, which made her look thinner and her legs appear straighter. Standing gracefully in the main hall, someone who didn't know her would mistake her for a time traveler from the Republic of China.
"This dress is beautiful. If I wear it, I'm sure it will look better than those capitalist ladies in the past!"
"What nonsense are you talking about!" Liu Hui glared at him. How could he say anything? Where are the daughters of capitalists these days?
Cao An knew he had spoken out of turn, so he walked into the main hall and circled around Xia Youyou. "Yes, she looks good! If she were a little fatter, it would be better."
Xia Youyou was very proud. She had good taste and it was only a matter of time before she gained weight.
After the three of them had dinner, they began to prepare food. Cao An took out a wheelbarrow that had not been used for a long time from the warehouse in the back and motioned Xia Youyou to put the food on it.
Xia Youyou ignored him, setting the grain aside on the ground before speaking. "I went to the supply and marketing cooperative today and bought a bunch of sacks. We need to change the packaging." Modern packaging is very different from that of this era, and it can't be seen by others. She had only packed the grain into small bags before, so Cao An didn't know there were large bags.
"How much does that person want?" Cao An asked her to pull the sack and started pouring rice into it.
"He said the more the better, one or two hundred pounds would be no problem." She prepared two hundred pounds, because she could tell the man wasn't a bad person and actually wanted to give more. Since he was trading small yellow croaker for food, he must have been in a long-term food shortage, so giving him more wouldn't hurt.
After the food was ready, the two asked Liu Hui to go and rest, and the brother and sister sat and waited. They had to wait until it was late at night and everyone was asleep so that it would be convenient for them to transport the food over.
When the time came, Cao An pushed the wheelbarrow out. Xia Youyou followed behind him, carefully looking around.
The two of them quietly entered the deserted black market. Xia Youyou was frightened for a moment when she saw the dark shadow, and approached Cao An and pulled his clothes.
Cao An watched the man in black emerge from the quiet alley. He stood there, his figure stretched out in the moonlight, like the Black Impermanence, descending from the underworld to claim lives. He reached out and grasped Xia Youyou's hand that was holding onto his clothes. "Don't be afraid," he said, moving sideways to shield her behind him.
The shadowy figure walked over and glanced at the girl behind Cao An. It was the same girl he'd met during the day. She was no longer dressed in black, but in a water-red dress, which made her look cute and adorable. If she had a little more flesh on her face, she'd definitely be a cute and delicate girl. But she was too thin! He noticed the red mole on her forehead and thought it was just right. Without it, she'd look a bit less interesting.
He nodded to the little girl behind the man and said, "A big yellow croaker weighs one hundred kilograms, and here are two." The man in black took out something wrapped in cloth from his arms, opened it and handed it to Cao An.
Cao An turned to confirm with Xia Youyou, who was a bit confused. Two hundred kilograms, two large yellow croakers? He looked at the man opposite him. His cold, hard face was angular, his eyebrows thick, and his eyes, like the starry sky he had seen that night, were deep and captivating. He had a high nose bridge, his lips pursed, and he looked at her intently. Unlike Cao An's fierce demeanor, he was cold and stern, with a touch of gentleness.
"Isn't that enough?" the man in black said as he was about to reach into his clothes again.
"That's enough," Xia Youyou said quickly, hiding behind Cao An and quickly reaching out to take the yellow croaker from him. "Two will be enough," she said like a little hamster.
The man in black smiled and clenched his palm, where the girl's thin fingers had just scratched it. His eyes shifted, and he nodded to Cao An, then bent down to unload the grain from the wheelbarrow.
Xia Youyou hid behind Cao An and watched him secretly. He snapped his slender fingers, and a man of similar stature to him came out from where he had just stood and stood next to him. Xia Youyou realized that this man was half a head shorter than the man in black.
The two men exchanged a few words in a low voice, and the man in black turned to Cao An and said, "Thank you very much. We'll be leaving first."
Cao An nodded, pushed the wheelbarrow, turned around and walked back with Xia Youyou.
Xia Youyou held onto Cao An's clothes and looked back at the two men, each carrying a bag. The man in black seemed to sense her gaze and once again turned back to look at her. She was stunned for a moment. This time, it wasn't an illusion; she actually saw a smile in his eyes.
She tilted her head, frowning, and looked back at him curiously. Cao An noticed her pause and turned back to see their eyes locked. He coughed and said, "Let's go back."
