Xia Youyou ran out of the alley and glanced at the empty street. Night had already fallen, leaving only a faint yellow hue on the horizon. Despair washed over her, and she finally broke down and cried. She leaned against the wall, slowly sat down, and buried her face in her arms.
Why was she sent here? Carrying a treasure, she could be discovered if she wasn't careful. What would happen if she was discovered? Would she be murdered to steal it? Even if she were quietly killed in this strange era, no one would know, right? No one would grieve for her, right? If she were the real Liu Daya, she could have sought out her biological parents and been protected and loved by them. But she wasn't. She was merely a ghost from the future.
"Squeak~"
The sound of a wooden door opening startled Xia Youyou and interrupted her sadness.
"What are you doing? Who's crying here? It's so late, it's scary!"
A dissatisfied voice gushed out at her, and Xia Youyou hugged herself tighter. She didn't dare to move, letting the man yell and curse.
"Don't cry at my doorstep, you're crying at my grave! Get out, get out now!"
The shouting and cursing attracted more people to open their doors on the street. Xia Youyou put on the hood of her bathrobe, stood up and ran quickly towards the city gate.
"You were hiding under the wall crying in the dark. I was so scared that I thought there was a ghost! Bah, bah, bah, look at my mouth. Didn't you hear me?" The man quickly closed the door.
Xia Youyou ran back to where she'd camped the previous night. Her chest began to ache from the running. She didn't take any medicine, simply lying down on the dead leaves. Looking at the moonlit, starry night sky, she felt a surge of sorrow. She even considered dying, as this strange world couldn't hold her. She let the tears flow from her eyes and into her hair, and suddenly remembered her father's words.
“You are not alone. Even in the darkest moments, there are people who care about you and are willing to walk with you through it.”
She thought of the team leader who stuffed her with steamed buns, the aunt who touched her head in the dilapidated temple, Aunt Liu Hui who picked up some food for her, and He Mei who she asked for directions. She was not alone in this time and space. As long as she wanted to, she could definitely do it!
I took out a pill, put it in my mouth and swallowed it. The pain in my heart finally eased. I sat up, took out the leftover beef from lunch, and ate it with rice.
Her initial plan couldn't keep up with the changes. She thought getting a household registration would be easy, but the reality was that she needed a place to live! And that place was a real problem for her.
Since I can't get a hukou, I'll just camp every day! It's just a place to live, and her tent is more comfortable than anyone else's home in this era! It's even more advanced and comfortable than those in developed countries abroad.
Adjusting my mindset, I walked towards the edge of the forest where I had been this morning.
She took out a massage chair, set it down, and lay down on it. She looked out at the faint, tiny lights in the village in the distance—they must have been the lights on in the houses. The chirping of various insects filled her ears, and she felt that this moment was unusually beautiful.
Gathering her courage, she shouted into the night sky, "I can do this!"
"You can what?"
A hoarse voice sounded behind her, and Xia Youyou jumped in surprise! She was very familiar with the voice and knew it was him. She quickly took out a pill and swallowed it to calm her racing heart rate.
She didn't stand up to look at him, but continued to lie on the massage chair. "Want to sit down and talk?" She casually tossed her hand aside, and a massage chair appeared next to her.
Cao An had been following her since she'd crouched by the wall, crying. He'd forced himself not to move forward to comfort her, despite her heartbroken sobs. He'd followed her all the way here, watching her lay there in despair. Just as he was about to step forward, he saw her move her hand, and suddenly, something the size of a candy bean appeared in it. He watched her put it into her mouth with a natural expression, then watched her sit up, conjure up food, and devour it with reckless abandon.
I watched all this in shock and confusion, and suddenly doubted my own judgment. Was she really a spy? Or was she the monster her parents talked about?
At this moment, seeing the strange recliner that appeared beside her made him feel even more complicated.
"Who are you?" Or rather, what kind of monster are you?
Xia Youyou sneered, "Don't be nervous, I'm not a ghost, nor a demon!" She waved her hand and said, "Sit down, I won't hurt you."
Cao An stood on her other side, not taking the strange chair, and looked down at her. Lying down, she looked even thinner, her cheeks sunken, her eyes unusually large. Her eyes were red from crying so hard.
"So who are you?"
Xia Youyou curled her lips and smiled, "This body belongs to Liu Daya, but I am not Liu Daya." Looking into his eyes, she added, "You may not believe this, but I am from the future. By some strange coincidence, I became Liu Daya. Before I came here, she had already died in the ruined temple."
Cao An frowned, not understanding what she meant.
"Okay, I know you don't believe it, but it's the truth."
"You are from the future?" What nonsense is this?
Xia Youyou took out a book from the space and handed it to him. "This is our history textbook from 2220. Take a look at it. If you don't believe it, you can read it." She took out her father's bracelet and said, "This is the technology of the future." She put on the bracelet and pressed the interface. She stretched her hand in front of him and let him see the content on the interface. "This is made by my father. In the future world, it's called a communicator. It can call people abroad across the Pacific Ocean and chat face to face." She took out the photo album and showed it to him one by one. "This is our parents, and this is me in the future world."
“So what does Future World look like?” The photos are almost all indoors.
Xia Youyou was stunned for a moment, then sighed and dug out the photos her parents had taken outside the base. "In 2023, the Japanese country released nuclear wastewater, causing global nuclear pollution a century later, lasting until 2220. By then, life outside of Earth would be uninhabitable. We've been living underground, inland, far from the ocean."
