Chapter 102 Memory Synchronization
A lot of complicated things have piled up.
This is not a description, but a statement.
Setting aside the issues concerning the World Tree and the Chimera, no particularly unusual activity has been detected in the vicinity of Apocalypse City and the Frozen City. The riot in Pis City lasted only one night, and although no specific culprits have been apprehended, it seems to be an isolated incident, and the stolen items were unexpectedly recovered in the end.
In addition, there is Professor Adrian, whose whereabouts are still unknown—it is unclear whether he is truly dead or has completely succumbed to the corrupt practices of that strange cult.
"Now that you mention it, there seems to be one more thing I forgot to ask."
Yao raised his head thoughtfully: "Master of the Box Garden, do you remember what happened a month and a half ago? The sighting of the strange tree shadows that appeared on the outskirts of Pis City."
Unable to figure out why Yao brought this up, I nodded: "Wasn't that matter already over?"
After Miss [Aisha], who was at the center of the incident, was taken away, the illusion that lost its core would naturally disintegrate, just like the otherworldly realm [Garden] created by the flower fairy, rather than continuing to affect the surrounding environment in a berserk manner.
I can't think of any other problems.
"If it really ends, it will be a huge help."
Yao pointed to the open pages of the book in his hand: "Just a few days ago, an eyewitness claimed to have confirmed a similar existence on the mountain behind the city of Mermaid Harbor - a tree shadow that was shining with a white halo and had a pitch-black hole at its roots."
The sudden news forced me to sit up straight: "It's not a hallucination?"
"No matter how realistic the hallucination, it's impossible for hundreds of people to simultaneously submit such consistent eyewitness reports. There were even people on the periphery of the crowd who said they heard faint singing and the laughter of young women."
"When and where?"
"There's no need to rush, Master Hakoniwa. You can rest here without worry, instead of hurrying on your way."
The polarized gem's eyes shone directly at me, gesturing for me to sit down and listen attentively: "According to eyewitness accounts, the strange tree shadow and anomaly appeared during the daytime when the tide was coming in, in a location higher than the highest hill in Mermaid Harbor, which was when most of the residents were evacuated to the mountain."
"But all of this only lasted a few seconds, and it disappeared when the sun shone again, along with the mountain that should not have existed."
"...It sounds like a mirage."
I have some doubts about my conclusion.
"Very likely."
But Yao made a definitive guess: "Although it was in the rear, which was contrary to the direction of the tide, all the eyewitness reports mentioned that it was raining heavily at that time, which is rare even at the seaside, and the rain curtain was made of magical water - this is what Hikari told me."
"If we add these two factors, it's not hard to imagine that it could trigger a brief mirage."
"Shouldn't that be a rare phenomenon that only occurs under intense sunlight in scorching weather? And even if it really is a mirage, there must be another underlying cause, right?"
I raised a question: "The essence of this phenomenon should be that it projects distant objects onto other places, and it is a distorted picture that is accidentally formed by the repeated refraction of light in abundant water... If that's the case, where does the object it projects actually exist?"
"What I saw on the outskirts of Piss City before doesn't really explain this."
“You’re right, so perhaps we should also add the possibility of illusion to the discussion.”
I spread my hands, indicating that there was no more to discuss.
Simply adding conditions and making assumptions is something anyone can do if they want to, and the final conclusion is bound to fall into the category of nonsense. It's like a child who throws a tantrum when they can't win a fight, and it ultimately doesn't count.
"For now, let's summarize the conditions for such situations as [phantom], [affected by magic], and [abnormal changes in the surrounding environment]. We might also need to add [witnessing]."
It seems that we haven't been able to reach a reasonable conclusion here either.
I sighed, then stood up: "I'd better go and talk to that captured core spirit. Maybe I can find a breakthrough there."
The magical water was largely controlled and dominated by the core of that tsunami, even the part that turned into raindrops due to the storm. And as the core spirit that had become a living being, it might still retain a vague impression.
I just happened to be passing by when I went to take care of it; it's been sitting there for so many days, I don't know how it's gotten.
Although I'm confident that the water environment inside the miniature garden won't be dominated by unauthorized entities, I did bring back some magical water along with it, so the part that was isolated and placed as a lake might be affected.
Without much obstruction, Yao adopted a "go ahead" attitude and picked up another book to read.
It turns out I was overthinking it.
The core spirit, submerged beneath the endless waters, resembled a child learning to swim for the first time, waving its arms and long, fish-like, snake-like tail as it curiously wandered around. Its body, in varying shades of blue, was separated from the surrounding waters by a thin but distinct layer due to the abundant magical power it contained, clearly visible even without any sensory probing.
Compared to its appearance in the waters of Mermaid Harbor, the current Core Spirit appears exceptionally mild and harmless.
However, the little guy showed unusual irritability and fierce aggression the moment he sensed them approaching.
