Chapter 150 Territorial Wars (Part 3)

Chapter 150 Territorial Wars (Part 3)

Despite some setbacks during the defense, the first wave of attacks was successfully repelled by the united efforts of the group.

Sitting to the side, I quietly observed their struggle.

Looking back now, I realize I rarely witnessed firsthand the efforts of people I knew to resist the beast tide. My laziness and the academy's lack of demands were merely excuses. Even at the Sacred Tree Stronghold, I only helped deal with a small number of tough nuts to crack; the majority of the effort came from the people there themselves, and my contribution wasn't that significant.

And just now, right before my eyes, these beings that look similar to me also went through a life-or-death struggle.

As the giant canines attacked, crossing the edge of the weeds, a hail of arrows rained down like locusts. The next moment, the unfortunate dogs caught in the crossfire let out mournful howls.

However, this does not effectively slow down their actions.

Since most of the arrows were fired from small crossbows, only a few managed to pierce its thick fur and hurt its flesh. Very few of them managed to hit a vital spot. At most, they would only make it cry out in pain, its steps would limp slightly, and then it would charge straight towards this side again like a dog that hadn't done anything wrong.

Another wave of arrows fell, followed by another.

About a dozen wolfhounds were successfully dealt with along the way, but this was still a drop in the ocean compared to the nearly fifty men. In addition, the closer they got, the less effective the bows and crossbows were, and the lack of arrows meant that they had to use temporarily sharpened wooden sticks and strips as substitutes, which caused a precipitous drop in accuracy and attack power.

In the end, the scattered decorative stone fragments and numerous collected stones of various sizes became the only means of attack. Although this struggle did manage to take down three or four of them and cut off the remaining wolves' attack range, causing them to bleed, the battle inevitably shifted to close combat.

Leaning against the railing, I carefully leaned half my body down.

After waiting for a long time, Shan calmly walked out of the gate, holding the shield [Polarized Mirror] he had obtained in the hidden dungeon, and stood at the forefront of the group.

The unfolded shield seemed to glow with a dazzling light, not particularly bright or blinding, but from the perspective of the wolfhounds, their field of vision suddenly narrowed dramatically, revealing only Shan standing at the very front. To the others, it appeared as if the attacking wolfhounds had suddenly stumbled, colliding and shoving each other, piling up in the narrow space in front.

That must be a spell with illusion effects. I never expected it could be used in this way; it really broadened my horizons.

Following closely behind the mountain were mostly young men, carrying bladed weapons and sharp objects. They held knives strapped to long handles in their damp palms, or carried dismantled planks, and had protective sticks and other items fixed to their waists for emergencies.

It resembles a cluster of solid rocks standing far from the coast, or a reef hidden beneath the shallow sea.

They seemed somewhat excited, though it was hard to tell whether they were more nervous or eager to try.

I took a closer look, and if I remember correctly, those were survivors who had bravely protected those around them during the evacuation. Some of them still had visible bandages wrapped around their arms and legs, but most had their forearms tightly wrapped in clothing.

Not a single person showed any sign of fear.

Perhaps it was the encouragement Sheng and Juncheng gave them before the war that worked, or perhaps it was simply a matter of wanting to survive in this changed world.

The charging wolfhound crashed squarely into the last defensive barrier, slowing its pace for a few seconds before ramming directly into the invisible shield wall erected by the mountain, producing a sickening sound of bones shattering.

The close-quarters combat began amidst silent roars.

Biting and violent blows alternated repeatedly, and soon the first bloodshed occurred, followed by a second.

It was impossible to tell whether the blood spilled on the ground came more from people or from the attackers. Those more seriously wounded retreated quickly under cover of rapid and orderly rotations, handing over the remaining blood to nearby teammates who were relentlessly pursuing the enemy.

Occasionally, the commanding voice of [Juncheng] could be heard coming from the hall below.

Looking back, people hurried by, sharpening their blades, weaving cloth, carrying food, and treating the wounded.

As the sun slowly and painfully rose towards the center of the gray sky, it cast its cold yet warm light, watching over the brutal competition taking place on this land.

The carcasses of the wolfhounds were piled up in a thick heap at the entrance of the library, forming a dark, blood-red puddle.

Few people escaped unscathed. Even the mountain, which was almost impenetrable in its defenses, was attacked when a wolfhound, not yet dead, bit his ankle while he was retreating to help a wounded person. He almost stumbled halfway back after kicking the dog's head off.

The leaders of the first group remained hidden until the middle of the battle, when they finally emerged from the wasteland.

Xiaoxi's [Arrow That Arrives First After Being Shot Later] pierced through the air the instant the leader charged forward, piercing one of his shoulder blades and successfully stopping the leader's charged charge. This allowed the melee team, who only noticed the leader when he was close by, to adjust their formation in time, splitting into one group to provide support and another to surround and kill him, successfully dragging him into a close-quarters battle, where he ultimately perished in the midst of the battle.

This was the most injuries sustained in the close-quarters combat since the first wave of attacks.

Damaged weapons urgently need repair, destroyed barriers need restoration, wounded people urgently need medical treatment, and those fighting desperately crave food.
