Chapter 184 Exploration
After re-checking my surroundings, I finally turned my attention to myself.
To be precise, it was the [mimicry ring] that was taken off from the left hand and transformed into a silver armband.
Upon careful calculation, it turns out that for almost a week since the last accident, I haven't opened the [Mimetic Ring] or ventured into it much during my slumber.
Although I was initially annoyed by the frequency of this, the sudden break in this connection for so long left me with a persistent, hollow, and hard feeling deep inside.
It's like playing a really fun game. When it comes to daily active users, you're always reluctant to do it casually, but if one day you're suddenly told that it needs long-term maintenance, you can't help but feel itchy and want to check it repeatedly.
At first, I thought it was because I was too busy rushing along the way and my mind was too tense.
However, in the following days, even when I actively triggered it, I still got nothing.
The senses that delved into it flowed away to who knows where, and after a long time, all that returned was an empty echo.
Even during the most intense moments of the battle, when a sudden flash of inspiration struck and I tried to mobilize it, I could only get a faint echo, which slightly enhanced the power of the spell I was casting at that time.
Admittedly, this did play a significant role in helping to reverse the tide of the battle. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have been able to successfully restrain that enormous bone dragon, which would undoubtedly possess immense power after recovery, in place for even a short time.
But I always had a vague premonition that if the effects of the [Mimicry Ring] could be fully released, the course of everything that happened back then would have been completely different.
So, after this unexpected incident settled down and the few people who had calmed down were coaxed to sleep one after another, I gazed at the bright halo in my hands in the cool moonlight and fell into thought.
A week ago, at the moment I was unexpectedly kicked out of my sleep, something clearly happened that caused a temporary limitation on the [Mimetic Ring]'s function. At the same time, my lack of understanding of this artifact further reduced its effectiveness.
I need to do something about it, at least to figure out its nature.
Let's start by learning the basic methods for identifying magical artifacts from the academy.
Upon visual inspection, the restored halo showed no abnormalities in color, texture, or feel. However, the luster it emitted was slightly brighter than before, perhaps because I had consciously infused it with magic several times during this period.
Because it is a unique, one-of-a-kind item that is claimed to be without warranty or maintenance, simple collision tests and numerous alchemical potion compatibility tests need to be carried out with extreme caution. In addition, this is in the middle of nowhere, and I do not have the complete set of alchemical tools from the workshop that my mentor gave me. So I will skip this step for the time being.
The repeated injections of perception yielded no response. The transformation form itself was as described in the instruction manual, and could be changed at will. However, since more could not be recorded at the moment, only three were included. The small spells that could be released after the magic was connected were greatly enhanced. However, because they were worried that the loud noise would wake up the others, they did not use the large spells on hand casually.
At times like these, I wonder if I should deliberately leave some openings in the surrounding defenses, or take the initiative to lure other wild beasts from a distance to attack? I could hunt some game and experiment with and verify the subtle changes in my skills, which would be a good method.
However, upon closer reflection, I realized that it would be terrible if I or the others who were asleep accidentally encountered any trouble. Therefore, this thought only lingered in my mind for a moment before I gave up on it.
There is another thing that is more on my mind.
When we had roughly dealt with the Corpse Dragon, the ball of blue flame that should have been left behind, waiting to be erased and purified, or left for many years to accumulate enough skeleton to rebuild a body, was somehow transformed into pure white and gentle flames under the effect of the purifying light. Then it was put into the [Simulated Magic Ring] on its own. Even though I tried to stop it, it didn't have much effect.
Admittedly, those pure white flames did emit a bright radiance when injected into the [Simulated Magic Ring], and the undulating flame tails swayed freely like fluffy velvet tails. However, if one tried to reach out and touch them, one would always find nothing, as if they were just false phantoms, or illusory projections reflected in one's eyes from another level.
When the strange phenomenon dissipated, not only was the shimmering light gone, but even the nearby sleeves and arms could not be touched. Only when one gently touched them with their fingers could one feel a brief, fleeting burning pain, like an illusion.
I initially thought that it was something called a soul that belonged to the corpse dragon before it died. However, is the inherent nature of the soul itself unprovable and unaffected by other things?
Stroking the smooth, round outer shell, I casually placed it in mid-air, then extended a finger and gently wiggled it downwards along the outer edge. The suspended ring only dipped slightly before slowly returning to its original position and spinning around.
However, it's not impossible.
The amazing scene of Hikari opening her ring is still vivid in my mind. Even though there was some secret assistance from her mentors to force her to level up, I cannot ignore the fact that the one who opened her ring was that little fool who only had a superficial understanding of magic.
