Chapter 197 Threat
The door opened and Duheng entered.
As a mother, she first glanced at her child lying quietly on the makeshift hospital bed, revealing a pained look in her eyes. Then she quickly concealed this wavering and hurried closer to us.
"Has something happened?"
I turned my head to look at her, while simultaneously focusing a small portion of my attention on the ground.
To prevent a situation where no one is available to respond if something happens, and also to prevent some "well-informed" people from sneaking in and causing a disturbance, we switched places with her to take over the positions of the personnel who needed to stay on duty.
The reason why Duheng, who had only been on the ground for a few minutes, rushed down to find us must be because something had happened that she couldn't easily make a judgment about.
For example... those guys standing in front of the library, wearing long black robes with edges that looked like they'd been scorched by fire, holding two heavy scriptures in their hands.
Their visit sent an unnatural chill down my spine, perhaps because of the evil aura lingering around their limbs.
I don't know exactly who they are; I only have a slight guess in my mind.
With a glance, I followed Du Heng out of the room and waited for her explanation.
Du Heng didn't waste any words: "A group of people claiming to be messengers of the apocalypse suddenly appeared in front of the safe zone, declaring that they must see the leader here today, as they have important matters to discuss."
"Can't you do it?" I asked. "Officially, you're one of the leaders of this safe zone."
"No... I know in my heart that, in the end, I am only able to sit in this position because of the influence of the two of you and my husband's abilities. If I were to get rid of your influence, I would probably be overthrown very soon."
It seems she's being a bit too self-deprecating in saying that.
"Moreover, those people do not recognize me as their leader here, and they have stated that they want to see people codenamed [Uriel] and [Sheng]—yes, they did say that."
Looking at the middle-aged woman with a wry smile, I shook my head and couldn't help but click my tongue.
Du Heng seemed hesitant, repeatedly scrutinizing our expressions and carefully choosing his words: "Please forgive my impertinence, but... does any of you know them?"
"...You mean the group of people standing on the ground? Although I haven't had much contact with them, they gave me a very bad feeling."
I looked at Sheng and shook my head: "No, we feel the same way you do."
Du Heng seemed relieved: "So, what do you need me to do? Just refuse?"
This seems like a good idea, since I have no intention of having any further contact with those guys who make me feel a bit nauseous.
Even if contact becomes necessary again, I only hope that it will be a time when they are all annihilated by thunder and fire.
Sheng, who had been silent all along, suddenly stood up and stopped me: "No, I suddenly feel that it would be better to make contact with them at this time. At least we can find out what they are up to."
Seeing me turn to him, the boy nodded calmly and explained, "The fact that they suddenly came to find us and specifically asked to see the two of us means that they must have found out about us beforehand, and even knew that you had just returned, so they specially arranged to come at this time."
"The most important thing for us right now is information. Even if they do try something underhanded later, we must get reliable information so that we can take precautions in advance."
As Sheng spoke, he stealthily moved closer and whispered in my ear, "Besides, Big Brother seems confident that he can handle all of them, right? Coincidentally, I have the advantage of being here. If they really want to cause trouble, I'll be ready to take action."
I glanced back at him with some surprise, thought for a moment, and nodded in agreement with his suggestion.
Since he's prepared to face it head-on, there's no need for me to be hesitant and appear unhappily timid here.
Unlike the prophets who visited before, we did not invite these doomsday messengers into the café, nor did we allow them to step across the weeds in front of the library.
That wasteland was originally intended to be left behind during the territorial war to better deal with the successive attacks of magical beasts. However, plans don't always go as expected. In the meantime after we dealt with the lion-tiger beasts and they all fell unconscious, the fifth main quest was marked as completed ahead of schedule, and so the wasteland was left behind.
Although it was stained with the blood of the attacking monsters several times, it still retained its original shape. However, the overall height had collapsed due to repeated trampling, and a narrow path that could accommodate people had been left in the middle.
The mysterious figures who gave me an ominous aura, claiming to be apostles of the apocalypse, stood there quietly, motionless, with only the hem of their robes fluttering in the wind, like scarecrows standing on a field ridge, which at first glance could only frighten me.
I told Duheng not to follow, and Sheng and I walked out the gate and stopped about twenty meters away from the group.
“We have come at your repeated requests,” I said. “Is there anything I can help you with? If not, we’ll be going back.”
"Cough cough, as expected, he's still an arrogant brat."
Standing at the very front, a black robe, bent into the shape of a shrimp, suddenly moved, and a strange, whistling laugh, like that of an owl, emanated from it.
I frowned and turned to him, trying to use my senses to confirm his identity, only to be shocked to find that beneath the black robe was nothingness!
How could that be?
It was understandable that my perception was unclear when I was a little far away, but now that I'm standing right in front of him, I can clearly confirm his existence with my other senses. How could I not be able to clearly discern his presence when I use my senses?
