Chapter 199 concludes here.
I heard most of what happened after that from Sheng.
After exhausting almost all of his magic power, he released a lightning spear condensed to the size of a millimeter-sized microneedle, piercing through the surface with a single point. Confirming that the maximum burst was forcibly stopped and prematurely detonated, the false body could no longer withstand the massive consumption of magic power and the ever-accumulating deficit, collapsing in a daze.
Honestly, I even think it's an incredible miracle that, in that situation, my body was almost completely unharmed after I woke up, except for the marks left by the intense burning of my skin, and that I could even run around and move about.
But Sheng, who stayed behind and waited for me to wake up, didn't think so.
"That's because the extra defensive energy I left for you was activated! You idiot brother!"
Wearing a loose new outfit, Sheng looked like she had just been crying; the area under her eyes was red and slightly swollen.
He lowered his head and cut the apple in his hand into equal parts. After removing the seeds from each part, he cut it in half from back to front, then placed it in a plate. A slightly delicate rabbit-shaped apple platter was quickly completed and placed on the bedside table next to him—if you ignored the shriveled apple itself and the pits left after removing the rotten parts.
While doing this work, Sheng still kept muttering complaints under his breath: "You have no idea how scared I was!"
"Because I trusted my older brother's words that he could handle it, I walked away to reinforce the structure. But then, a short while later, there was another explosion and a fire. Almost at the same time, I sensed that the pre-installed vines were being disturbed. I wanted to go back to help, but I couldn't leave because I had to stabilize the swaying building. I could only watch from afar... You have no idea how worried we were when we saw that!"
I know, I know. After that, I was kicked out because I was unconscious, and then, out of worry, I summoned the [Fool's Curtain] and directly experienced the feeling of being roasted by fire at close range from the outside.
Thankfully, I wasn't actually burned, otherwise I would have cried out in pain a few times.
That enormous gray sphere, filled with a large amount of ominous magic, must be a powerful aggregate of curses, formed by constantly squeezing out everything from itself, with human lives as the main material.
According to my initial calculations, if it were to actually cause a full-blown outbreak there, not to mention the other safe zones in the distance, at least all the survivors in the nearby library would be completely contaminated and cursed. At that point, there would be no need to specifically distinguish who fell ill and who was still within the safe zone; even Sheng and I would have a high probability of being severely affected.
Trying to compress the Thunder Spear to trigger it earlier was a risky move.
Even setting aside its inherent minor purification and ignition effects, simply trying to compress it is a difficult task.
To prevent this last and only opportunity from being missed due to carelessness, I took advantage of a break in the conversation and a moment to distract the other party, and tried to gather all the magic I had in my hands in the clenched palm behind my back. I also seized most of the constantly gathering free magic and released it at the same moment that the magic space nearby formed, which barely managed to block part of the possibility of widespread dissemination.
However, even so, I cannot easily escape what is right in front of me.
Matter vaporizes and disappears, liquids vanish without a trace, and the atmosphere is displaced and thinned...
The scorching backflow burned the airway, boiled the internal organs, and caused the skin to become dry and cracked. The blood that flowed from the eyeballs disappeared instantly, leaving only a few dark red traces on the charred surface.
However, the burn marks that still remain on the surface of this false body are not actually remnants of the burst of flames, but rather the corrupted magic that, after penetrating the vine-woven net, has become a curse that clings to the body like a malignant sore.
Sheng tried several times to heal me, and poured out most of his stockpile of [liquid life], until I stopped him, and he finally reluctantly stopped this futile effort.
"It's okay, it just means we'll need to let it rest for a little longer."
I stretched out my palm, briefly examined my arm, then put it down and put on a natural smile: "At least you see, even though I've been contaminated with so much, I haven't just collapsed and died like the others."
"Besides, isn't it precisely because of taking this risky step that those with mild symptoms have a chance to recover?"
"Brother, you're about to die, why are you still worrying about others! Can't you take better care of yourself?!"
Sheng angrily grabbed the rabbit apple from the side and shoved it into my mouth, covering most of it: "You're not some saint who saves people from suffering, there's no need for you to risk your life for others!"
I spread my hands, pointed to myself, and then pointed to him.
Sheng was even angrier: "Yes, at first I did do some stupid things, but those were all things that wouldn't have a significant impact on my own interests. Who would be as foolish as you to go and risk their life..."
"Oh, and also, I heard from that bastard who carried you back that the guy wasn't actually completely dead in the end, right? He even had a backup plan, like finishing him off or something... This is the second time!"
"Well, anyway, what I'm saying is, big brother, you're an idiot!"
After quickly finishing a summary that allowed no rebuttal, Sheng stuffed another piece of apple into my mouth before crossing his arms and sulking away.
I felt somewhat wronged.
Even though they were certain that the other party was completely dead, they still kicked them a few more times to confirm, but they didn't expect that the other party had a method that would only be triggered after death. After the huge cursed sphere was detonated and dissipated in advance, it triggered two more attacks in succession.
