Chapter 207 Matters of the Former Kingdom

If we're really counting by the amount of effort we put in, then the only people we chose to fight, besides the Pegasus that served as our mount and didn't run away, were myself, Miyuki, and Hikari who was there to assist us. If we were to add the two little hounds, Hound and Cat, or the mentor who had been hiding in the shadows and only contributed a little when necessary to guide Hikari's temporary ring-up, then it would be hard to say how many of us actually contributed.

However, Alice responded to my probing with a burst of laughter.

As if she'd heard a really funny joke, she clutched her stomach, swaying back and forth, causing the chair beneath her to creak under her weight. In her erratic kicking, she deliberately kicked off her white boots, which had somehow come undone, and then propped her bare feet up on my knees, her toes nimbly moving, leaving me momentarily unsure how to react.

"Go, go, sit properly in your seat, and be careful not to fall."

I angrily shook off her knee and moved further away from this scheming guy. Only then did I see her finally wiping away tears, coughing and gradually stopping her laughter.

“Hehehe, I, I’m telling you,” Alice laughed haltingly, “If my colleagues heard you say that, they would definitely, haha, definitely jump out of their coffins and beat you up.”

I grumbled, taking a big bite out of a cookie, pretending that I was crunching down this rascal's head: "What's so funny? I was just about to ask you because I didn't know. But you look like you don't want to talk about it properly. Can we even have a proper conversation?"

"Haha, I'm professionally trained, unless it's really funny, hahaha."

Alice smiled and took another sip of tea, but seemed to have accidentally choked, coughing violently a few times. She pounded her chest a few times before barely recovering: "Okay, okay, it was my fault just now. Hmph, so, the answer is actually simpler than you think, because we only sent one at the time, and that guy wasn't even at the level of a Sword Saint."

I stared in astonishment, even forgetting to continue chewing the cookie in my mouth.

I'm telling you, my friend, isn't your boast a bit too exaggerated?

In a battle against a combined force of three or more people, we barely managed to break through the impasse only by relying on attribute suppression. And you actually say that we only need to send out a swordsman who is not yet a sword saint to defeat an adult dragon that is far stronger and has a wider range of attack capabilities than the bone dragon we are facing in a one-on-one duel?

That's no joke!

"Hmph, Master really does look unconvinced."

Alice offered an explanation for my reaction, as expected: "Ah, that's true. After all, so much time has passed, and the glory of the previous generation has long been buried in the dust of the past. Some of it is even still buried under the ruins. It's impossible to pick it up and piece it together for inspection, let alone replicate or rebuild it."

"However, that is actually something that is possible for us. Because our knights are not just one person, but nearly a hundred people. Even without officially going into battle, as long as we can gather more than six people to form a battle formation, we can transfer the average of our abilities to the person who is going into battle, forcibly increasing their strength."

"Battle formation?"

This is the first time I've heard this word.

"It's a collective team-based combat model, which is quite complicated to explain. If you want to know, I'll write it down for you in a bit."

Alice paused, then took another small sip of tea: "In short, it is precisely because of this technology that we have been able to elevate each member to a level close to that of a master, thus enabling us to overcome all obstacles on the battlefield and successfully repel the invading alien races and those with ulterior motives. This is perhaps another reason why everyone wants to join us."

I nodded slightly to indicate that I understood.

According to Alice, as long as they can gather six people who have mastered this technology, their combat strength will not only increase dramatically, but it will at least be enough to make up for their weaknesses.

"But isn't that strange?" I asked. "A former kingdom with such power could have easily conquered the entire continent, right? How could it have been destroyed in an instant, disappearing completely without leaving much of a record?"

"I don't know about that~"

Alice shrugged: "But putting everything else aside, you're absolutely right about one thing. At least back in my time, Rhystes had already conquered the entire continent, and even the mermaids and elves, who are now rarely seen, had to outwardly obey the royal decrees."

"That's really amazing."

Nowadays, most elves are indifferent to ordinary humans. Unless they complete certain trials or meet special conditions, they can barely gain their recognition. Otherwise, they usually don't even want to communicate with the humans living nearby. When necessary, they speak quickly and urgently, as if they have rented a mouth and are in a hurry to return it.

"Hehe. But that was a long time ago. Now that I think about it, time really flies. In the blink of an eye, the era I once lived in has turned to ashes."

"The ash is alright, but I'd like to know how you've managed to survive until now."

I looked her up and down. Apart from her previous despicable rabbit butler appearance, which left a deep impression, I couldn't detect anything particularly special about her: "She doesn't seem like she's embarked on the path to eternity..."

"The path to eternity isn't so easy to tread, kid."
