Chapter 222 Hidden Story

"I don't know about that."

Miyuki said, "But the only thing I know is that in this city, unless it's an emergency or you're sure you'll move immediately after you make your move, it's best not to use methods that attract too much attention outside. Let us handle the physical work."

As she spoke, she glanced at Alice and saw the sly rabbit smiling with its eyebrows arched, before making her suggestion.

I nodded to indicate that I understood.

"However, if we say 'outside,' meaning there are places with environmental cover, then it's still possible to perform the spell for a short period of time, right?"

"...probably, but we should still be careful in everything we do."

Thinking about it this way, it becomes clear why there are so few people in the city who can perform healing spells, and why those who can are so easily targeted by the guys in the inner city.

It's best to make a note of this for now.

Under these circumstances, many of my methods were prohibited. The only ones I could use were a few small tricks with a limited range of influence. Even before using Void Walk, I had to think things through in advance to avoid accidentally bumping into the densely packed buildings in the city or attracting attention.

"Let's get back to business."

Miyuki glanced subconsciously out of the alleyway: "Advent, if you only look at the name and the final result, it is indeed a good holiday, and it does fit the things the church promotes."

"But that's just one-sided information that the public has been exposed to through propaganda."

She pursed her lips, her voice hoarse: "The hidden truth is that this is a ritual that requires a human sacrifice to be formally established."

I frowned upon hearing this.

It is normal for large-scale events involving a city to use rituals, and it is also normal to use human sacrifices in rituals. However, the fact that the human sacrifice used makes the whole thing unusual and reveals an evil meaning.

Although the existing belief in gods is no longer the majority, there are still related records when examining the remnants of the past: in ordinary rituals, in order to pray for blessings and rain, seek protection or peace of mind, or to achieve a certain purpose, people would usually slaughter pigs, cattle and sheep as offerings, and then add things that correspond to the preferences of the fabricated gods, burn essential oils and herbs, and use ritual silver knives to carve patterns, in order to complete the ritual.

Only those still in a state of ignorance, and cultists still pursuing evil purposes, would choose to use people as human sacrifices, even at the cost of killing large numbers of specific targets, in order to complete the ritual.

For example, there was that group of bastards I happened to witness before, who were targeting innocent girls.

Do those guys really believe that as long as they offer up their own kind as tribute, those gods whose existence is still unknown will answer their calls?

What a ridiculous daydream!

Even if such a being truly exists, it's unlikely to feel any affection for humans who create such things, right? Unless it's an evil god who enjoys playing pranks or watching dramas of mutual slaughter.

Miyuki continued her narration: "The requirements for a living sacrifice are that the woman must be a pure and innocent virgin with a heart of pure devotion. She will be carefully cared for before the ceremony and will know nothing about the specifics of it."

"Until the very last moment of the ritual, a ritual silver knife coated with essential oil will cut her wrist and pour into the Holy Grail until it finally overflows."

"Only then will the miracle known as the God of Winter be revealed before everyone's eyes. Although we do not know the exact effect of that light on illness, we have indeed heard of miracles where people have recovered from serious illnesses because of it."

"So, after you heard about this, you immediately went to verify its authenticity, and..." I carefully observed Miyuki's expression, "...went to find that pure virgin who should now be under the protection of the church, right?"

Looking into the distance, the pure white inner walls stand silently, isolating the city's core from most of the outside world. It's like an island that stands on the earth but floats in mid-air, looking down on everything on the ground as insignificant as ants, while arbitrarily manipulating the lives of others, disguising them as a sacred gift.

After a short while, Shenxue nodded gently.

She then sighed, "But I didn't find it."

It's not a good thing that we didn't find it.

While this is an optimistic view, on second thought, perhaps those in charge sense sensed the possibility of an accident and deliberately moved the location of the person being cared for as a human sacrifice.

"However, even now, we still don't know why you know so much."

Alice chuckled and interjected, "Isn't it supposed to be something very few people know? Yet you've told us so much about the hidden secrets behind it all. It's hard not to be suspicious, isn't it? Could it be that you were once one of them? Hmm? Are you a descendant of a powerful family with connections, or a member of those churches? Or perhaps you were just an escaped human sacrifice?"

As Alice continued her questioning, Miyuki's expression gradually hardened.

However, her interruption reminded me of something else.

Previously, when I was in the blind saint's clinic, I happened to hear the hunter couple talking about how, supposedly more than 20 years ago, there was a situation where the upcoming Advent Day was unexpectedly interrupted, but I don't know what exactly happened at that time.

Given Miyuki's age at the time, and considering the bits and pieces of information I had heard from her, being used as a human sacrifice seemed incredibly unimaginable, but other possibilities existed...
