Shenxue and I quickly found a secluded corner and hid, holding our breath. A moment later, the grand lights in the tall, pointed buildings in the distance lit up one by one, and a dozen or so young people in white robes walked past us in a disorderly manner, converging on that spot.
"It seems the infiltration from the other side has been discovered."
Glancing at Alice, who was shrugging her head in confusion on the roof, Miyuki made a low-pitched judgment.
The timing was too coincidental, to the point that I began to wonder if someone was really hiding in the shadows, casually manipulating this chaotic chessboard.
Oh, maybe there really are some, like my advisor's stalker who occasionally plays the role of a funny guy.
However, my mentor usually prefers to make the situation more complex and interesting, rather than leading to chaos and ignorance as it is now.
“Continuing forward carries the risk of being discovered.” Miyuki asked with her eyes, “Alice and I are alright, but what about you?”
I hesitated for a few seconds: "How far are we from the destination you mentioned?"
"Go around the building in front, and look for the small house in the far west corner."
Miyuki said, "However, the building in front belongs to the trainee priests. Although most people have been woken up and left, it is possible that some people are still staying behind."
If only I knew illusion magic. Although it was more complicated to use and required me to maintain the illusion effect as much as possible, at least the overall magic fluctuations were smaller, and it saved me the trouble of disguising myself or finding a hiding place.
Unfortunately, I don't know if it's because I lack comprehension or I simply don't have the talent for it, but I failed several times in the end. Instead, I learned the transformation technique because of it.
Wait... a transformation technique?
As if a flash of lightning suddenly passed through my mind, I pulled Miyuki back a little more, and after confirming that she was ready, I put away the cumbersome robe, activated my transformation technique, and leaped into the swordsman's arms.
The arm that caught me sank slightly downwards, but quickly and steadily stopped me.
Shen Xue placed her other free hand on the nearby wall, and with a sudden burst of strength, she leaped into the air in just a few moments. Then, she lightly placed her hand on the windowsill, raising her height by several meters again.
After repeating this action several times, when I noticed that the sound of the wind in my ears had stopped and I came to my senses, I realized that I had been gently put down and that my feet were on flat, smooth white bricks.
“This is one of the tallest spires in the area. Usually, because the top is so high, no one is on duty. We can hide here for a while.” Miyuki peeked out and caught Alice as she jumped in from the side. “However, judging from the current situation, the guy who also broke in here seems to have made a big fuss. I’m sure someone will come to check on things soon.”
"We need to find new paths before that, whether it's going deeper or breaking away."
"I just confirmed that."
Alice pulled out a handful of sunflower seeds from somewhere and leisurely cracked them open in her palm: "That guy was dressed in all black and was causing trouble at the detached house in the east. Most of the people who passed by earlier have gathered at the central church, and a few armored squads with weapons rushed east ahead first, but we didn't encounter them directly. They're probably blocking the road."
What about the west?
I scrambled onto her knees, barely managing to keep my balance and avoid slipping, and tried to look her in the eye.
Alice looked at me in surprise, then her eyebrows curved into a smile: "Oh my, where did this little cutie come from? Her fur is so long and shiny, and she's wearing adorable little pendants. She's so incredibly cute! Come here, let me give her a good kiss!"
As she spoke, she reached out, one hand touching my abdomen and the other gently scratching my chin.
Somewhat helplessly, I dodged it, using my tail to shake off the restless hand reaching down on me, and then pinned it down: "Stop fooling around. Let's get down to business."
Alice lowered her eyes regretfully and clicked her tongue, "For me, teasing my master is the real business... Okay, okay, I know!"
"It's quiet to the west, at least on the surface. There are no lights, and no sign of reinforcements, even after the warning bells rang. People are even leaving from the west. It seems like the people here don't care at all."
There are two possibilities.
I raised my furry paws: "Firstly, they really don't care about that place because there's nothing there, so they don't need to be careful."
"Another possibility is that it was intentional. They pretended to transfer people away, but in reality, they were just being cautious, showing the illusion of being unguarded to others who might still be lurking in the shadows—like us. But in fact, they had laid a trap, like a spider lurking in the corner of a web, waiting for a fool to try to break in, and then striking unexpectedly when he let his guard down."
"That actually sounds plausible."
Alice offered a sharp critique.
With a light leap, she returned to a crouching position, then gently pulled me, who had been jolted up, into her arms, winking mischievously. "So what should we do now? But to be honest, even if it's a trap, I'm perfectly fine with it! In fact, I'm confident I can lead you through enemy lines three times over!"
Killing his way in and out three times... that's too cruel for those guys who don't seem to be fully equipped, isn't it? I even vaguely remember that among the group of people holding weapons that I caught a glimpse earlier, quite a few had fluffy, soft bellies. You could tell at a glance that they hadn't trained properly and were just trying to get a comfortable and prestigious position, just filling in the numbers all day.
