Chapter 32 The Eve of the Storm

"However, there is one thing I understand. My friend, you rushed here so urgently, without even taking care of yourself or restoring the magic power that is most important to a mage, to convey this message to me. It is clear that you are not joking. I should thank you on behalf of the entire city, because without your efforts, we might still be in a state of confusion about what might happen next, and we might even lose more people due to recklessness."

...To be honest, this city lord is really good with words. His long speech almost stunned me. I didn't know what to say for a long time. I could only pick up my teacup with trembling hands to hide my feelings.

These praises truly make me feel unworthy. I only did some small things along the way and am completely unworthy of such undisguised praise from such an important person.

"No, please don't feel guilty, my friend. I'm even worried that simple thanks and praise might tarnish everything you've done for the residents of this city, yet I can't do anything for you right now."

He shook his head, stood up, and then stopped me from standing up with him: "Please rest here, my friend. Please forgive me for all I can do for you right now. I must go to the front lines now, to face the potential crisis with some of my other friends."

Please forgive my absence.

He nodded and strode out of the reception room. Soon, behind the closed door, a cacophony of anxious footsteps followed a brief but rapid exchange of tasks, sounding the urgent drumbeat of impending battle.

This makes me very uneasy.

A storm is coming. Although only a few scattered wisps of clouds can be seen now, no one can deny this fact.

However, as long as the storm has not yet arrived, as long as one can still look up and see the ever-growing, approaching dark clouds, one's heart will never truly settle down.

Perhaps some people will still choose to ignore it due to a lack of foresight, but as I stepped out of the city lord's office building, I could still clearly feel a serious and tense atmosphere that was completely different from the city's original light and unrestrained atmosphere, which was clearly revealed on the faces of every adult I passed.

Children should naturally be innocent and carefree. I can still see some young children running happily down the street, holding up homemade windmills, and even if they occasionally bump into passersby, they only receive kind words in return. The windmills sway and spin, and because the wind passes through them, they never see any trouble or gloom.

But what about the storm? When will it arrive? Where will it go, and how much damage will it bring?

Nobody knows.

Even when I tried to ask my supervisor a question using the key, all I got was a silent rebuke.

After wandering aimlessly for a while, I intended to tell those who were unaware of the impending crisis about the disaster that was about to befall them. However, I was surprised to find that everyone I passed by seemed to know something about it. Some of the burly men who were drinking heavily in the tavern were even raising their eating utensils high and shouting that they wanted to rush to the front line to surround the city and cut off more monster heads. They were then mercilessly scolded by the bartender who was wiping the tables and chairs, which caused a burst of good-natured laughter.

Is there fear? Perhaps.

Is it the fearlessness of the ignorant? Perhaps.

But since they were willing to take that step, that's enough.

I cannot force everyone to stand up and protect their homeland, let alone the mercenaries who wander around making a living. Even I myself have a very strong urge to escape—it's not like I don't have places to hide. I can just cover my head and hide in the garden, and even the chatter of those outsiders can be ignored.

Unless the power of the void's devouring force increases, who can pull me out of it?

However, being prepared does not guarantee victory. Records show that even the best-prepared cities can be destroyed due to the slightest oversight. In the past, many cities have been breached by concentrated attacks of beast tides, not to mention the current sheer number.

if……

"What are you so worried about? You're so slow and indecisive. I'm getting tired of waiting for you to come over."

A familiar voice suddenly rang out at the end of the road.

Looking up somewhat blankly, I saw Rod's familiar, thin figure sitting leisurely against the wall, one leg casually crossed, arms crossed and glancing sideways at me.

While I was pondering, my body had already unconsciously led me to Qingshui Alley.

"Hey junior, you can't be serious, right? You're going to worry about something this small for ages. What's there to think about?"

Today, Rhodes was not surrounded by those fervent women, and the alleyway was unusually quiet, making him seem much more relaxed: "Isn't there really only two choices in this situation? Either pick up a weapon and fight, or take those you can and choose to preserve your strength as much as possible. What's there to hesitate about?"

"And what about you?" I asked instinctively.

"As for me..." Rod smacked his lips twice, patted the gun blade beside him, and grinned, thinking he looked very cool. "I choose to fight to protect my clients and potential clients."

"Hey, don't think that studying alchemy makes you weak. You know, the teaching in the academy strictly limits the scope and range of our abilities. As long as I have my good brother here, plus my secret alchemical bullets, I guarantee that those monsters that dare to rush in will taste my power."
