Chapter 63 Aftermath

The dragon was killed without any surprise.

After a period of internal turmoil and sustained external attacks, the colossal creature finally let out a defiant roar before crashing to the ground.

To be honest, this thing really died a rather painful death. Leaving aside the continuous external scraping, the constant bleeding from multiple internal wounds, and the pain caused by foreign objects piercing its internal organs—even with all its defenses maxed out, it couldn't withstand that!

So much so that the dragon beast wasn't entirely killed by humans, but rather tortured to death. It's said that it even rolled around on the spot in the end, begging [Frostsword], Hiro, or any random passerby to give it a quick death.

Yeah, and then, unsurprisingly, I got gua sha again.

The scales attached to the neck are too thick. With multiple permanent defensive attributes, the hardness and impact resistance of the scales are comparable to the best quality synthetic steel currently available. Even if one were to cleave the blade with magic power, it would be impossible to break through the external natural resistance in one go.

Even if the scales were successfully removed, the skin and muscle fibers were not to be trifled with. With the dragon beast making no struggle or resistance, several warriors who had retained most of their fighting strength volunteered to hack at it for a long time, but their hands were sore and they could only insert half of the sword tip.

Fortunately, the teachers who came with the academy couldn't bear to watch any longer and sent someone to call [Frost Sword] and Hiro over. They were instructed to quickly apply the attributes of freezing and fire in sequence, following the lines of the dragon beast's muscle texture. After several repetitions, they finally managed to kill it.

After they disemboweled the dragon and rescued me from it, it was around dawn the next day.

I was so bored while waiting that I found a comfortable spot to lie down and take a nap. I ate dinner and a late-night snack, and also cleaned myself off the bloodstains. What I thought would be resolved quickly had dragged on for most of the day. I didn't know if the earlier beast tide had weakened their fighting strength, or if something unexpected had happened afterward.

Yao, Pupu, and the hunting dog, however, suddenly disappeared without a trace. One scene showed Yao asking Pupu to remove the dirt stuck to his hair and face, and the next, after a slight turn, he was nowhere to be seen. Thinking about it carefully, they probably went back to the Little Garden.

If I didn't know that horror movie scenarios couldn't happen in reality, I would have panicked already!

However, there is also good news.

Based on my keen senses, perhaps due to the unexpected arrival of the dragon beasts, the beast tide that had come from afar suddenly halted for a long time in the remaining grove outside the city. Perhaps the demon, acting as its leader, was observing the battle from the sidelines, assessing whether there was any room for a sneak attack?

In short, although occasionally a few monsters would charge towards the city in groups, they were all repelled. The main force, which had been hiding in the rear, remained calm despite its restlessness and even gradually retreated. This made people feel a chill while marveling at the fact that there were such creatures among the monsters who could assess the situation, and at the same time, they couldn't help but feel a little relieved.

If such a large horde of beasts were to charge in recklessly, it would be uncertain whether the city could be defended from the clutches of both dragons and beasts. Buildings near the city walls and non-combatants who might be hiding there would certainly suffer.

I wasn't the only one who noticed the monsters' unusual retreat. Even the usually composed Instructor Hiro occasionally peered in that direction and exchanged a few words with me.

Thanks to his volunteer efforts, I was given a precious opportunity to slack off. The matter concerning the beast tide has now been handed over to the academy for investigation and handling. I just need to wait for them to complete their investigation and submit the final records and analysis results—through the Library of All Things, of course.

As for me... I need to take care of some personal matters.

Although I've always been aware of it, it's true that sometimes going too far in slacking off isn't a good thing.

After successfully breaking open the dragon's belly and the tender flesh separating its stomach, the faint morning light fell precisely on my eyelids, which were closed for a short nap, waking me from my not-so-smooth and comfortable sleep. However, before I could adjust to the light and clearly see the familiar dark figure before me, a petite and soft body threw itself into my arms, causing my chest and abdomen to suffer heavy blows one after the other.

Okay Hikari, I'm sorry I took the risk again... but my back really hurts, can I let go for now?

At my pleading, Hikari did indeed release me as promised, which made me feel a bit of her growth. But before I could meet her tearful, clear eyes and explain that I had only chosen to do what I did because I was confident and could help, a sense of unease suddenly surged within me.

I tumbled and rolled to my side, emerging from the dragon's belly, still shaken. I stopped and crouched down near a pile of rubble about half my height. After a moment's hesitation, I poked my head out to try and see what had happened. Then, another blade of light, emanating a chilling aura, grazed my head and shattered the rubble behind me. I was forced to tremble with a deafening roar and crouch back down.

"Mr. Yumi!"

Hikari's sullen voice rang out from behind the half-wall, her usually gentle and melodious voice carrying an unusual sternness and displeasure: "Tell me yourself, what did you do wrong this time?"

I... I looked around, and finally, under the increasing pressure from behind, I forced myself to speak: "...I shouldn't have jumped in knowing there was danger..."

"Speak louder!"
