Slightly ahead.
Two days after receiving the letter, I made a last-minute trip back to the Sacred Tree Stronghold to pick up Hikari and the little ones, who had finally finished their cleanup work.
As promised to the fairies, after we finish resisting this abnormal beast tide, I will take them to my little garden to live temporarily until they choose to embark on their journey to find a new home in the future.
"It all sounds like friendly news to us. I never expected you to be such a friendly human being."
The flower fairies flew by, chattering away in my ear, but I ignored them, mistaking them for the annoying buzzing of mosquitoes.
"Hey! That's too much! I take back what I just said! You're a bad guy! A super, incredibly bad bastard!"
Hikari, who is usually cheerful, seemed to be preoccupied. Several attempts to strike up a conversation with her only yielded blank and brief replies. Her gaze remained fixed on her feet, and it was unclear what she was thinking about.
"Perhaps she saw too many injured people at once, so her thoughts are still stuck there?" Held in the arms of the doll maid, Yao closed her eyes, circled the girl once, and then gently shook her head. "It's alright, I'm watching over her. She'll be fine in a couple of days at most."
That's a really reassuring guarantee.
...provided that the housekeeper does not appear only as a head.
Watching Hikari being easily led away by the doll maid towards the newly opened, oversized hot spring bath, I shook my head and decided to temporarily agree with her suggestion and let that idiot catch her breath and rest before making any further decisions.
As for the fairy race, aside from a few who were still in the spatial remnants left by the World Tree for the final collection work, I directly lured the rest here. I also found a relatively flat grassy area in the western corner of the garden and assigned it to them, letting them do whatever they wanted.
It must be acknowledged that the fairy race has a unique natural advantage in building their territory.
With their unique affinity for nature, the plant seeds they cultivate also possess a special quality. By simply infusing a small amount of magic into the seeds buried in the ground, their dormant power is awakened.
The tangled branches quickly grow into a lush tree two or three meters tall. In the shade of the blooming trees, various fruits are like strings of beads. The large, palmate leaves curl slightly upward, gently supporting many small, hollow sacs. Their shape is thin and transparent like cicada gauze, with only a little color at the tip. They sway gently from side to side in the breeze, like the flowers on the treetops, or like leaves with different colors.
Beneath it, patches of flowers and grasses sprout from the soil. The mixed shrubs and individual flowers do not crowd each other or appear chaotic; instead, they complement each other, creating several well-arranged layers. Plants of the same species grow close together, and the abundant flowers are arranged in sections according to their shape and size, spreading out along the gradual change of iridescent colors. Only a few narrow paths are left to pass through, hidden under the swaying leaves, yet in an instant, a vast and colorful sea of flowers is created.
Alright! That's enough for now!
After circling around a few times, the flower fairy, who was in charge of planning, flew back. Under the expectant gazes of the other fairies, she put her hands on her hips, nodded slightly, and looked at me smugly: "Why aren't you saying anything? Are you stunned by this beautiful scenery?"
The cheering fairies rushed back to their little nests, took out the magic stone fragments they had collected and carried, sucked on them a few times, and then put them back in, stuffing them into the bottom.
"..."
I don't know if they were stunned by what they saw, but I'm just wondering if I can get these guys to build on the other land as well, so that this flat land isn't just full of flowers, but when I look around, the surrounding area is all barren.
But it doesn't seem like it would work very well.
Not to mention that the fairies don't have enough plant seeds left, if they really did that, the library would be surrounded by a forest. Add some broken dirt roads, animal carcasses hidden under the roots, dusty cobwebs everywhere, and then draw a curtain of darkness, hanging a flickering orange-yellow oil lamp in front of the library door, and it would definitely be a horror movie filming location, making it impossible to sleep well.
Especially if, when you knock on the door, it happens to be the doll maid who opens it while holding Yao's head...
I shuddered and didn't dare to think about it further.
On the other side, the flower fairy, who had not expected to receive the reply she wanted, seemed to have said something to the fairy queen who had been living peacefully on the treetop. After floating back, she rested her chin on her hand and looked around at the scene before her, appearing thoughtful.
When I asked her, she replied, "I always feel like something's missing."
This response was the epitome of ambiguity, a prime example of what it would have been better to give no response at all. When I asked again, I was met with the reply, "Let me think about it some more, and I'll ask you again if I need anything." I was speechless and could only leave the increasingly noisy fairies behind and make my escape.
It can't be the World Tree, can it? Where am I supposed to find that kind of thing?
According to the fairies, and based on the indirect verification obtained after inspecting the original site of the World Tree, the troublesome Tree of the Gods disappeared more than a hundred years ago. It was only because there was a seemingly real but actually illusory [illusion] at the original site that it was not discovered by outsiders.
When asked why they hadn't informed the people living nearby about this matter for so many years, the fairies looked at each other and finally the flower fairy stepped forward. She expressed that her people had always been timid and fearful, and that they had always firmly believed that the sacred tree would soon return—and then they were completely thrown into chaos when the illusion was suddenly hidden.
