Following the spirit of the meeting, everyone got to work. Wang Xuanxuan went up to the rooftop sunroom, scrolling through the latest news on her phone while looking around. Ye Yunyi and Wang Zixiang followed her upstairs at first. The neighborhood was relatively quiet, and those who could afford detached villas generally felt confident, except for their neighbor Aunt Li's family and Ye Yunyi's family, who bought their house here after winning the lottery and paying off their debts.
Almost all the houses were lit up, some even had TVs on and people playing computer games, just like any other day. Ye Yunyi checked the neighborhood group chat; community workers and property management were still reassuring everyone, telling them to trust the government, that the situation would soon pass, and life would return to normal. Ye Yunyi specifically looked at Aunt Li's house. Through the large French windows, she saw Aunt Li's family having dinner. Her son, Li Biao, sat with his legs crossed, drinking and eating meat heartily, while Aunt Li chased after her beloved grandson, Li Xiaoming, to feed him. Li Xiaoming was five years old and spoiled rotten; the other children in the neighborhood wouldn't play with him because he was always being beaten, had his things stolen, and was scolded by Aunt Li. Seeing that their attention wasn't on them, Ye Yunyi secretly breathed a sigh of relief. But there were other neighbors as cautious as Ye Yunyi, busy taking stock of their belongings, their curtains only partially drawn so Ye Yunyi could see them.
Ye Yunyi instructed Wang Xuanxuan to pay close attention to her surroundings, especially at Aunt Li's house. She told her to notify everyone immediately if she saw anything unusual on the surveillance footage. Then she went downstairs to help Ye's mother pack up. Wang Zixiang and Ye Xiong started by checking the rooftop to see if there were any places that could be easily climbed up, if the glass could be easily broken, and if the places where supplies were stored could be easily seen and breached.
Back on the first floor, Song Anmei was already packing. The curtains had been drawn when they brought back the supplies. Since it was close to the Lunar New Year and the temperature wasn't high, the meat wouldn't spoil even if it wasn't refrigerated immediately. Ye Yunyi glanced at the contents; the meat selection was quite extensive. Between what they'd bought a couple of days ago and what they'd brought back today, there were about 200 jin of pork, over 100 jin of beef, over 50 jin of mutton, dozens of jin of chicken, duck, and fish, and dozens of jin each of shrimp, pork intestines, ribs, pig's head meat, pig's tongue, chicken thighs, and chicken wings. There were also over 10 jin of ingredients for hot pot, including three-delicacy meatballs, fatty beef, beef aorta, tripe, and duck intestines. They'd also brought back a lot of glutinous rice balls and dumplings, filling the refrigerator to the brim.
"Mom, if you can't put it all away, take out all the braised meat and sausages you made before and let them dry in the storeroom. Also, make more of the meat that can't be stored into braised meat so that it can be stored better," Ye Yunyi said to Song Anmei.
"Okay, thankfully we're planning to cook at home this time, and we bought enough seasonings. We'll start cooking after we move everything," Song Anmei said while packing the meat.
"Mmm," Ye Yunyi replied while glancing at the rice, flour, and oil, which filled almost half of the living room. If they used it sparingly, it would be enough to feed them for half a year. Ye Yunyi felt a little more at ease.
"Mom, let's move these to the basement first," Ye Yunyi said, carrying a 10-pound bag of rice in each hand. Song Anmei quickly came over and carried a 20-pound bag of rice in each hand. Seeing that she could carry 20 pounds without difficulty, but struggled with 10 pounds, Ye Yunyi secretly vowed to exercise more.
The basement was located down from the kitchen, and thankfully, it was well-concealed during the renovation. Ye's father said that most houses in City A had basements for convenient storage, and after seeing that the conditions were suitable for a basement, they had it installed. The basement was about 10 square meters, and besides a row of shelves and a large refrigerator, it was empty. Ye Yunyi and her mother moved the rice and flour to the basement, while Ye's mother started organizing the refrigerator, and Ye Yunyi went to prepare the vegetables.
She bought quite a lot of vegetables, including fresh ones such as scallions, green onions, celery, cabbage, pea shoots, chives, lettuce, radishes, peppers, and sweet potato sprouts. She also bought several bags of potatoes, onions, sweet potatoes, beans, and lotus roots. Dried goods included wide rice noodles and wood ear mushrooms. Seasonings included various soup packets, hot pot ingredients, braising spices, dried chilies, Sichuan peppercorns, five-spice powder, star anise, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar. Ye Yunyi left some of the perishable leafy greens on the shelves, and moved the rest to the basement.
The snacks and drinks consisted of candy, sunflower seeds, peanuts, dried tofu, bread, and biscuits. A case of instant noodles was bought because Wang Xuanxuan loved them. The drinks were Sprite, Coke, orange juice, and soda water. There were also cigarettes and alcohol. Ye Yunyi moved all of these to the storeroom. At this moment, she secretly added to herself that she needed to find some instant noodles or self-heating rice when she had the chance, so she wouldn't starve if the water, gas, or electricity were cut off.
Most importantly, they were short of water. Apart from the few boxes of drinks and soda, they would likely die of thirst if the water supply was cut off. So she found all the tools she could use to collect water and filled them to the brim. She would try to find more water when she had the chance. The pond in the yard could be used to store water, but it was not for drinking. She would try to deepen it when she had time, so that it might be usable for washing clothes and bathing.
Finally, there was the fruit: besides the apples, bananas, oranges, and pomelos they bought, they also picked many oranges on their way back. Except for the bananas, most of them could still be preserved. Fortunately, they had planted one plum, one peach, one pear, one orange, one persimmon, and one pomelo tree each in their yard; all were transplanted mature trees, and perhaps they would bear fruit next year.
Ye Yunyi and Song Anmei cleaned, stored, and tidied the living room, working until late into the night. Ye Yunyi told her mother to go to sleep, and that they would make sausages or cured meat from the pork they couldn't store the next day. She went upstairs to relieve Lin Xuanxuan, keeping watch while thinking about what else they needed.
Ye's father and Wang Zixiang also inspected the house inside and out, reinforced the problematic areas and set up barriers. By dawn, they had finally completed the electric grid and placed it on the wall, providing an extra layer of security.
Fortunately, nothing happened on the first night. Ye Yunyi looked at the list in her hand.

Looking at the paper, Ye Yunyi quickly turned on her computer and downloaded all sorts of lifestyle guides, such as those on raising plants and animals, health maintenance, exercise, boxing, and medicine. She also downloaded several TV series.
While downloading Ye Yunyi's video, I was also looking at the news online. The zombie biting incidents had spread to several more areas, but they were quickly eliminated. The cause of the outbreak is still unclear, and another set of prevention guidelines has been released.
This virus, named Zombie Virus No. 1, has an unknown incubation period. It is contagious, transmitted through bites or scratches from an infected person, and symptoms appear within approximately 30 seconds. Symptoms include involuntary body convulsions, graying eyes, and slower but stronger movements than normal. Avoid fighting unless absolutely necessary; only a fatal head injury can kill the virus. It is recommended to stay home and avoid going out unless absolutely necessary.
