Chapter 1: Just Got a New House and Then the Apocalypse

"Ah..." Ye Yunyi and her mother, Song Anmei, were shopping at a large supermarket, preparing for a dinner party the next day, when they suddenly heard a sharp female voice. Then came a huge commotion, with people pushing and running.

"Run! There are zombies!" Someone in the crowd shouted. Ye Yunyi, who often reads apocalyptic novels, felt her heart skip a beat. No way, no way, there really are zombies.

Before anyone could be surprised, the crowd had descended into chaos. Some brave souls brandished sticks and knives to fight, others fled towards the door, and still others stood frozen in fear. Ye Yunyi only hesitated for a moment before quickly grabbing the nearest cart and rapidly filling it with various kinds of chicken, duck, fish, meat, and frozen goods. As she did so, she said to Song Anmei, "Mom, quickly grab some meat; we have to leave right away." Reminded, Song Anmei also hurriedly grabbed some things. Because of her years of farm work, she had become quite strong and quickly filled the cart with a lot of food.

Seeing that the meat was almost packed, Ye Yunyi told her mother, "Let's go." The back exit was right next to where rice, flour, and oil were stored. Ye Yunyi carried the cart full as she went, and Song Anmei followed suit, constantly taking and putting things away. There were no cashiers around, so Ye Yunyi and Song Anmei followed the crowd towards the exit.

As Ye Yunyi stepped outside, a commotion broke out. She saw several people running in the distance, relentlessly pursued by staggering zombies. Those who were slow were pounced on and bitten, their flesh torn to shreds. A few seconds later, they staggered to their feet and joined the chase.

Fortunately, Ye Yunyi's car was not far from the door. She called her frightened mother and quickly pushed the car towards her car, unlocked the trunk, and quickly put the things into the trunk in one go.

She urged Song Anmei to sit in the passenger seat, while Ye Yunyi quickly loaded the things that others had taken out but hadn't had time to put into the car into the back seat. It wasn't that she was greedy or reckless, but rather that she knew too well the importance of real items after reading so many novels.

While calling home, Song Anmei looked around. Just as Ye Yunyi was towing the third cart, a zombie suddenly appeared beside her. It had grayish-white eyes, a hole bitten in its stomach, oozing blood and intestinal fluid, and bared its teeth as it lunged at Ye Yunyi. Song Anmei yelled, "Yiyi, behind you! Run!" Ye Yunyi quickly turned the cart around, shoving the zombie aside, then grabbed a piece of meat from the cart and stuffed it into the zombie's mouth. The zombie devoured the meat. Ye Yunyi pulled the cart over and quickly loaded the contents into the back seat. She ran to the driver's seat, started the engine, and drove off before the other zombies could catch up.

On the drive back, Song Anmei said, "I just called your dad. The neighborhood is safe for now. I've already told him to take precautions. Nothing like this has happened to your sister yet, and I've reminded them to prepare as well."

"Okay, that's good." Ye Yunyi replied. With a mother like this, she could relax a lot. She drove while observing the surroundings. Luckily, their newly bought villa was in the suburbs, and the shopping center they came to was only in a semi-rural area. Aside from being chased by a group of zombies when they left, the closer they got to home, the fewer zombies they saw on the road. "Mom, open Douyin (TikTok) and see if there's any news?"

The news quickly went viral on Douyin (TikTok). Similar sudden zombie biting incidents have occurred in many parts of the country. The armed police were dispatched to handle the situation, and the government reassured the public to stay home and wait for further notice, saying that the situation would be resolved soon.

Hearing about zombie attacks in many places, Ye Yunyi knew that the problem couldn't be solved anytime soon. Just then, her husband, Wang Zixiang, called to ask where they were. Everything was fine at home, and they had locked the doors and were reinforcing them. Fortunately, Wang's parents were in Chongqing with his younger brother, where there had also been zombie attacks, but they were safe.

They arrived home safely after a series of close calls. Passing some fruit and vegetable fields, and after ensuring the surroundings were safe, Ye Yunyi and Song Anmei picked a lot of produce and loaded it into the car until it was completely full. Back at the residential compound, the security at the guard post was tighter than before. After a check to ensure no one was injured, they were allowed to enter.

The security guard, Xiao Deng, was quite helpful. He had given Ye Yunyi a lot of convenience during the renovation. Ye Yunyi kindly reminded him, "Xiao Deng, be careful and stock up on food." Xiao Deng, around 20 years old and about 1.8 meters tall, still looked a bit young. He smiled and said, "Okay, Sister Yiyi, you should also be careful." Then he quietly handed her a stun gun: "Sister, for self-defense." Ye Yunyi was very grateful, thinking that she should always help him when he needed it.

Seeing Ye Yunyi return home, Wang Zixiang breathed a sigh of relief. Song Anmei called on everyone to move the things out of the car. Ye Yunyi quickly stopped them, saying, "Mom, don't flaunt your wealth, don't make too much noise."

Ye Yunyi bought a detached villa, but there were still quite a few neighbors around. Even before the renovations started, her neighbor, Aunt Li, started causing trouble. She'd complain about how noisy they were, how Song Anmei was from the countryside and lowered the neighborhood's standards, and how they had bad taste. She was constantly watching their house. There was also a troublemaker in her family who was involved in fighting, gambling, and other illegal activities. Rumor had it that they had taken their adopted daughter from them and kicked her out of the house.

Ye Yunyi knew how terrifying people could be, especially in the apocalypse. If people knew they had stockpiled so many supplies, they would surely attract attention.

Fortunately, the days are short in winter, and as it gradually got dark, Ye Yunyi didn't turn on the lights. She and her family moved all the goods from the car into the living room, then sorted them out and figured out how to organize them.

I had planned to host a housewarming party for relatives and friends tomorrow to celebrate their new home, but now the party can't be held. However, I have prepared a lot of things for it: rice, flour, meat, drinks, wine, snacks, seasonings, plus the rice, flour, and oil I snatched from the supermarket today, all kinds of food and utensils, and fruits and vegetables picked on the way. The whole house is full of them.

Having read so many post-apocalyptic novels, Ye Yunyi knew that if things got out of control, water, electricity, and gas outages were inevitable. Fortunately, her father, Ye Xiong, was fond of high-tech gadgets. He was primarily responsible for overseeing the house's renovation, installing solar panels, preparing generators, and even buying a large refrigerator. He also built a basement. At Ye Yunyi's suggestion, the perimeter wall was heightened and reinforced. Initially, there was no need to worry about security.

That evening, Ye Yunyi organized a family meeting. The attendees were Ye's mother, Song Anmei; Ye's father, Ye Xiong; her husband, Wang Zixiang; and her daughter, Wang Xuanxuan.

Ye Yunyi said they needed to prepare for the worst. First, although supplies were currently plentiful, they couldn't afford to be complacent and would eventually run out of resources; they needed to conserve food and distribute it in rations. Second, they needed to be careful; they would take turns keeping watch, not only against zombies but also against human attacks. Third, they couldn't let their compassion get the better of them; they had to prioritize their own safety. Ye's parents were kind-hearted people, so they had to be careful. Fourth, they needed to plan for sustainable development. The villa had a garden and pond planned for growing vegetables and raising fish. Wang Xuanxuan was 13 years old and lacked life skills; she couldn't rely solely on her parents' protection. She needed to learn to cook, grow vegetables, and exercise. Yunyi and Wang Zixiang were in poor health and needed to exercise more, especially Wang Zixiang, who was the only able-bodied young man in the family—he could be blown away by a gust of wind; he shouldn't become a burden. Fifth, Ye Yunyi assigned tasks to everyone. Tonight, everyone would have food and drink, and since there were no zombies in the neighborhood, nothing too inhumane would happen. Wang Xuanxuan would keep watch in the rooftop sunroom, where there was a place to rest, and it was also secluded and she wouldn't get cold. Ye's father and Wang Zixiang went to check which parts of the house were at risk and reinforced them. It would be best to install an electric fence around the walls tonight. Ye Yunyi and Ye's mother sorted, processed, and stored the food.
