Chapter 22 Digging a Hole

When Li Ke returned to the Chen family villa, only Aunt Chen was home. It was already dark, and Chen Niansheng and Li Zhenzhen would usually be back by then.

Aunt Chen was sitting in the living room watching TV and eating fruit. When she saw Li Ke return, she didn't say anything and went straight to the kitchen. She quickly paused the TV program and followed him to the kitchen.

Soup was still simmering in the kitchen, but the vegetable and rice cookers were empty; they hadn't been cleaned yet.

Aunt Chen leaned against the kitchen doorway, watching Li Ke's fruitless attempt with a smug look. She coughed before saying, "Zhizhi isn't feeling well and is in the hospital. Her family is concerned and has all gone to see her. She won't be home for dinner tonight. I'm the only one here, so I just made something simple. You've already eaten, and I didn't know when you'd be back, so I didn't make anything for you."

After hearing Aunt Chen's words, Li Ke thought about it for a moment and realized why the Chen family had made such a big fuss this time, even going to the hospital to show their care for Chen Zhizhi. It must be because Chen Zhizhi had confirmed that Zuo Hui was also at Kangxin Hospital. If the situation were any better, the two of them would probably have already started an affair.

The Chen family members were all of average appearance, and Chen Zhizhi was not particularly outstanding to begin with. Right after graduating from high school, she took advantage of the holiday to have plastic surgery. The doctor was introduced by her aunt, Chen Ziyue, who was also a customer there.

Therefore, Chen Zhizhi is now a stunning beauty. Although she is an artificial beauty, the doctor's skills are superb, so she still looks very natural and outstanding.

In her previous life, Chen Zhizhi and Zuo Hui got together a year later. Now, with Li Ke giving them a push, the two should be able to get together sooner.

Li Ke washed the wok, took out five or six eggs and some greens and peppers from the refrigerator, planning to stir-fry a side dish and then cook some noodles for dinner.

Aunt Chen watched from the side, her eyebrows raised high: "What are you doing with so many eggs all by yourself?"

As she was saying this, she wanted to take a few back. Li Ke stopped chopping vegetables and pointed the cleaver at Aunt Chen's neck. Aunt Chen was frightened by the sharp weapon in front of her and quickly took a step back.

"Ke, what are you doing! Don't forget who you are!" Aunt Chen said angrily to Li Ke, seeing that the distance was temporarily safe.

Li Ke took the knife and saw her out of the kitchen: "Aunt Chen, go watch your show. I'll just make some simple noodle soup, no need for you to worry about me."

When Aunt Chen met Li Ke's gaze and saw the knife in her hand, she could only temporarily avoid her sharp edge, thinking to herself that when Grandma Chen returned, she would definitely file a scathing complaint.

Li Ke didn't care what the old woman was thinking. After she left, he busied himself with his dinner, took some seafood from the freezer, and made a soup base. A bowl of delicious noodle soup was ready.

After Li Ke finished eating in the kitchen, the entire Chen family returned in a lively atmosphere. Grandma Chen had a loud voice, and Li Ke could hear from the kitchen that it sounded like Aunt Chen had also come back.

Li Ke washed the pots and pans and left the kitchen. The adults in the Chen family ignored Li Ke unless there was something wrong, and Li Ke didn't want to say anything more to them. She planned to go upstairs to her room.

Aunt Chen was carrying a bunch of fruit when she saw Li Ke come out. She exclaimed "Ah!" and the fruit basket in her hand fell to the ground, with the fruit rolling all over the ground. At Li Ke's feet was a big, red Fuji apple.

A group of people who were talking in the living room all looked over when they heard the noise. When Grandma Chen saw Li Ke standing there without moving, she made no attempt to hide her impatience: "You're such a big girl, always so clumsy. You can't even do the simplest things right, and you're always causing trouble for others. Li Ke, what are you standing there for? The fruit is all over the floor, don't you know to help Aunt Chen pick it up? You have no sense at all, you just look like you have no good fortune."

Aunt Chen, who had been doing this on purpose, immediately seized the opportunity when she heard Grandma Chen's words. She started by exclaiming "Ouch!" and, rubbing her back while holding a half-basket of fruit, said, "Grandma, I didn't want to say this, but I don't know what's wrong with this girl, Ke. She came back in the late afternoon yesterday, looking at me with a very unpleasant expression. I thought that since she said she wasn't feeling well, she probably really was. I saw her eat two full bowls of rice and go upstairs, so I thought that if she could eat, there shouldn't be any major problems. I figured that even if she wasn't feeling well, she would be fine after a good night's sleep. But who knew that this girl would play outside all day today, and when she came back in the evening, she wouldn't talk to anyone. She went straight into the kitchen and took out a bunch of vegetables to cook. I thought it would be wasteful for her to take so much, so I casually reminded her, and then this girl actually grabbed a knife and tried to attack me. Grandma, you know me. I've been by your side for so long, being careful in everything I do and saving every penny. Who would have thought that now I'd be ridden over by a girl from another family? It makes my heart ache."

When Aunt Chen first arrived, she called Grandma Chen "Auntie," but after Grandma Chen told her a few times that it wasn't proper, she started calling her "Old Lady."

As Aunt Chen spoke, tears welled up in her eyes. She took a handkerchief from her apron and wiped them. Li Ke knew that Aunt Chen often used the handkerchief to wipe Grandma Chen's mouth. Seeing her action, Li Ke felt inexplicably disgusted for her.

Upon hearing this, Grandma Chen stood up in anger and walked over. As soon as she moved, apart from Grandpa Chen who was still sitting, Aunt Zheng was sitting next to him making tea for him, and Chen Niansheng, Li Zhenzhen, and Chen Ziyue all followed.

Li Zhenzhen looked preoccupied when she saw Li Ke. After hearing Aunt Chen's words, her expression became even more gloomy and cold. Chen Niansheng stood beside her and considerately shook her hand, indicating that she should not take it to heart.

Li Zhenzhen only gave him a half-smile before turning her attention back to the two people in the midst of the commotion.
