Chapter 229 Lessons Learned

"I just got back. I live here. I've always lived here. I'm not lying to you. You can't kick me out!" the child emphasized again in a trembling voice, but his figure remained hidden behind the wall, too afraid to come out.

Li Ke, holding a gun, walked around to see a child with a large head and a small body, a thin frame with a dusty little face.

Her hair was tangled in clumps, and she was wearing a gray t-shirt that was clearly for adults, with cut-off marks on the cuffs, and a shoelace was tied around her waist as a belt.

The pants didn't fit either; the cuffs were rolled up several times, and he wasn't wearing shoes, just socks covered with scraps of cloth, so the original color was no longer visible.

"You say you live here, how can you prove it?" Li Ke asked.

The child glanced at Li Ke before standing up against the wall. He looked to be less than a meter tall, and it was clear that he was indeed a young child and not a dwarf.

Li Ke followed the child a few steps forward and came to a wall. The man squatted down and lifted a corner of the wall to reveal small spaces inside.

It turned out that part of the wall had been hollowed out, and inside there was a mattress and some clothes jars, which proved that this was indeed the child's living quarters.

The child looked at Li Ke again, and although he didn't say anything, Li Ke understood what he meant.

Li Ke: "I won't kick you out. Is there anyone else here besides you?"

The child shook his head: "I'm all alone. If you want to go to a place with more people, you can walk a little further ahead. There's a residential area there with lots of people."

Li Ke stared at the child: "Where do you want me to go?"

The child fell silent again, only watching Li Ke warily.

Li Ke put down her gun. She had taken off her helmet while eating, and now she was only wearing half a black metallic mesh mask on her face, and her voice was her own.

"I'll rest for a few hours and then leave. This is still your place, so don't bother me, and I won't bother you either." Li Ke said coldly before preparing to go back to rest.

The child suddenly spoke up: "Don't go any further. You can't get through there. If you go any further, they'll catch you and lock you up."

Li Ke paused only briefly, ignored him, and continued walking towards her resting place.

The child behind her raised his voice again, seemingly a little angry: "Didn't you hear? There are bad guys ahead. You can't get through. Even if you have a gun, you can't beat them. They have guns too, and there are a lot of them."

Li Ke then turned around and asked, "Then why didn't they arrest you? They probably wouldn't let a kid like you go, right? Or are you in cahoots with them?"
