Chapter 65: He is in so much pain, I would rather he died
Li Wenjing's whole body was shaking, and her blood seemed to be rushing wildly. Everything about him weighed on her heart, making her heart more and more determined.
"I didn't hurt him. He told me that he was very grateful for my help. Because of me, he was able to untie his knot and do what he wanted to do."
"You asked him to do something like this, he's almost dead!"
When talking about "death", Gustav's cheeks, which had been trying to remain calm, began to twitch uncontrollably and uglyly. He took out a handkerchief and wiped his tears across the wrinkles on his face.
"I told you, he's always doing dangerous work. The conditions here are terrible. There's all sorts of messes going on: bacteria, parasites, viral infections... He's not afraid of those things, just you. Do you know why?" Her head, nearly exploding with pain, forced her to speak with a powerful, machine-gun throttle. She wiped away a tear with her sleeve. "Even if he lives in such agony, you just want him to live. How he lives is of no concern to you. Ultimately, you don't love him, you just feel guilty."
"You let him die because he's in pain? Do you really love him?"
"He said death would be a relief for him. I used to feel very bad too. Was I selfish? Should I let him be relieved? No, I don't want to do that! I also want him to live a good life. I like him, I love him, and I want to be with him every day! What can I do? So I can't let him live in such pain, even if he promised to work hard to live for me! I can't, I can't!"
Generally speaking, there was a buzzing sound in her ears, as if countless bees had entered her ears and bitten her head, making it seem like it was about to split open. Her voice got higher and higher as she spoke, and when she finished, a sweet and bitter taste welled up in her throat.
Gustav was silent and motionless, staring at Li Wenjing like a statue.
She continued, "I'm different from you. I can't pretend nothing happened. He doesn't have epilepsy. It's just that when he sees Philip, those who hurt him will tremble with stress. You know all this, but you just say it's just a fight between kids. That's not the case. I'm going to expose the whole thing, scold you, scold little Philip, whatever you want. I want him to get better, truly get better."
Gustav's mouth was drawn down so far that it almost blended into the lines on his face. After a long moment, deep wrinkles appeared on his forehead, and he replied softly, "Even if he's dead."
"The source of his pain is right there, but you pretend not to see it. He's in so much pain, I'd rather he died and be completely free. He said he would die even sooner without me, and I don't want him to suffer."
Gustav sighed, "He won't die. He will get better. I will take him back to France and fly him to the United States. As long as I can cure his illness and he no longer has to deal with the outside world, I will protect him well."
"You can't take him away. He won't get better if he stays with you."
"It will be fine."
Talking further was like talking at cross purposes. Li Wenjing understood, and Gustav understood too—what exactly was wrong with Gu Weiyi? It was just that she kept asking, and he feigned ignorance, deceiving himself. Finally, he stood up, kissed the back of Li Wenjing's hand, and said he was going to the operating room to watch over Charles, and asked Wenjing to rest well.
She pulled her hand out and slapped Gustav across the face. She struck with all her might, her wrist cracking with a cracking pain. She didn't care about anything else. She clenched her fists and stared at Gustav, ready to fight him.
He simply touched the place where he was hit with his palm, turned his face away and said calmly: "I understand everything you did to Ciel, and I thank you. Please forgive me for losing his temper with me. I am still his father, and I cannot lose my child."
"Then you should go back to your country and sue Philip and let the law judge him fairly."
"Fair? How can there be justice after Faust made a deal with the devil?"
He smiled bitterly twice, then lowered his head. Li Wenjing couldn't see his cheeks clearly, but he looked like a brown-haired dog with his head hung low.
"Wen Jing, I promise you, this is the last time. Leave him to me and I will protect him. To be honest, I am not discussing this with you. This is my decision and I will not change it."
After saying that, he turned and left the ward.
"Come back! Gustav!"
He was gone for a long time, and Li Wenjing was still howling. The ward was filled with a sense of bewilderment. She tried to get up, but her legs gave out again. She was truly exhausted, and she collapsed to the floor. There were no doctors or nurses in the ward. It wasn't until Lu Cong returned that he scolded her again, calling her "big aunt" and "little aunt," and then helped her back to the bed.
Before she could ask, he told her, "Doctor Gu is out of danger for now, but he hasn't woken up yet. I heard he'll be transferred to another hospital in two days. His father is so rich, he should be flown back to China for treatment. Don't worry, he might be fine in two days."
No matter how relaxed he said it, Li Wenjing sat up like a spring, "No! I can't hand him over to those who want to harm him. I can't admit defeat to them. I'm the only one he has!"
As Li Wenjing spoke, her shoulders began to shake violently, and she slowly sank into the bed. Lu Cong placed his hands on her shoulders, saying nothing, waiting for her to calm down.
"His father won't harm him. I'm more worried about you not being able to handle it. He has the best doctors treating him, but you haven't even got a doctor to treat a concussion. Wenjing, listen to me. No matter how strong you are or how iron-willed you are, you're the one who needs rest the most right now. Leaving Dr. Gu to his father's care is the best option."
"I can't do that."
Li Wenjing pounded the quilt hard, her wrist aching slightly. He held her arm and said, "Think about it, if Doctor Gu woke up now, he would also tell you to rest and not move around. He's very fierce. If you don't listen to his advice, he'll arrest you and give you an injection that will hurt you to death!"
"Is all I can do is rest?" She clenched her teeth. She also realized that no matter how much she continued to make trouble, the situation would not improve.
"You're too irritable today, I understand. But I also have to say, for example, when that doctor came in tonight, you shouldn't have stopped him. If you delayed him, Dr. Gu would be in greater danger. Do you understand me?"
"I know. You mean it's useless for me to worry. It will only hurt him."
"Those involved are often confused. Okay, okay, a huge thing has happened. It's time to go to bed."
Li Wenjing lay in bed, her entire body relaxed. She couldn't move at all, staring blankly at the spider silk on the ceiling. The yellow sand dripped down and fell into her eyes, causing a sharp pain. "Forget it, let's transfer to another hospital. The medical conditions outside are better, and it will be better for him. Can you help me with one more thing?"
"What's up?"
"I want his computer, laptop, or something else. Please do me a favor."
"What do you want this for?"
"Maybe there are medical records or something, and I don't want Gustav to take them."
