Chapter 64: Who knows whether you are here to kill or save people?
Several blurry shadows rushed in front of her and called her name anxiously. She squinted her eyes, and the red light of the setting sun made her eyes dry. They surrounded her bed, and the air seemed to be sucked out, making her almost unable to breathe.
"Doctor Gu!"
She suddenly opened her eyes wide, her gaze following the eyeballs, searching for the most familiar face among the faces in front of the bed. No, there was nothing. She called out to him, each time more urgent than the last, hoping that he would appear, as he always did, in time, with a reassuring smile.
"Sister Jing, Doctor Gu..."
One colleague started, but was quickly interrupted by another: "You were in a car accident and injured. Rest well and wait for the doctor to check you out."
"Where is Doctor Gu...? Speak!"
Li Wenjing struggled to push herself upright, a sharp, exploding pain in her head. As if blood were gushing out, the world blurred before her eyes. She stumbled out of bed, trying to grasp a shadow. Every thought seemed to tear at her already shattered mind, and the memories after that phone call were shattered into incomprehensible fragments.
Her colleagues immediately came to her aid, and after repeated questioning, they told her that Dr. Gu was unconscious and still receiving emergency treatment. Thanks to her timely phone call, they were able to be rescued in time. They didn't know anything else.
The mist in her eyes seemed to clear a little, and she could see her fingers again, tightly gripping the cold cross necklace. Tears fell, and despite her colleagues' efforts to stop her, she continued to move out, holding onto the wall. They had no choice but to support her as they walked towards the operating room.
It felt like a hundred years, until the evening breeze cooled her scalding tears. Outside the operating room, Li Wenjing sat down against the wall of the boarded-up room, her whole body limp, as if she were stuck in a quagmire, powerless. Tears burst forth once more, she wept until she was almost unconscious, her entire world filled with pure, crushing grief.
Even when Lu Cong arrived at the hospital and helped her sit down in a nearby chair, she was still shaking uncontrollably. Her tears had long since dried, leaving only physical tremors. Lu Cong hugged her, and Anna, who arrived shortly after, also hugged her tightly. The warmth, love, and connection of others made her feel that she could still exist in this ethereal world. Reality, however, was always illogical and absurd. For example, he was clearly fine, but on this day, on the road, just after they had a heart-to-heart, he had an accident.
Why him and not me? Why am I still alive?
"I killed him. If it weren't for me, he wouldn't have gotten into trouble..."
She looked at the blood on the cross necklace, as if outlining a vague figure protecting her. Between her eyes closing and opening, her head seemed to split open, as if every drop of blood and every bone rolled over by the cold scalpel.
Lu Cong patted her back and comforted her, "It's okay, it's not your fault, it was an accident. The geological conditions here are not good and rockfalls are common. Judging from the scene, it seems that Doctor Gu accidentally fell into the valley while trying to avoid falling rocks. Don't worry, the doctor will cure him."
"Impossible! Our unit is responsible for that reinforcement project. I know it very well. I've seen it, and there will definitely be no problems..."
Before he could finish, the roar of helicopters echoed from the courtyard outside. Two helicopters landed in the open space, and Gustav, followed closely by a man dressed as a doctor, rushed straight to the operating room. Upon seeing him, Li Wenjing leaped to her feet as if struck by an electric current, stumbling in front of the group, forbidding them from even a step closer to the operating room. Her back arched slightly, her eyes bloodshot like a lioness's.
The doctor took a step to the side to avoid her, but the injured lioness growled and moved in sync, stubbornly opening her arms.
Gustav held her shoulders and said, "Wenjing, if you have anything to say, please wait and let the doctor go in first! This is the best surgeon in East Africa."
Li Wenjing snorted coldly, "Who knows if you are here to kill or save people?"
"Miss, I assure you, I am a doctor and we swore an oath never to harm our patients."
Li Wenjing still refused to budge, but Gustav suddenly lifted her up by the waist and moved her aside, signaling the doctor to hurry in. The sudden feeling of being suspended in mid-air and restrained caused the excruciating pain in her head to explode again, causing her to scream shrilly and struggle with all her limbs. "Let me go! You're in cahoots with them! You can't touch him!"
As she spoke, her hands frantically clawed in front of her. By the time Lu Cong sent the doctor to separate them, Gustav's neck was covered in blood and fingerprints. Lu Cong comforted her, saying they had verified the doctor's identity and it was indeed a doctor. She seemed not to hear Lu Cong's words, still staring at Gustav with her bloodshot eyes.
"Tell me! Is it you?"
"I'm sorry, I'm Charles' father, and I'm very sad about what happened," Gustav turned to Lu Cong, "Can I speak to Wen Jing alone?"
Lu Cong nodded and said to her, "Wenjing, calm down. This is Dr. Gu's father. He can't possibly harm him. Can you two talk it over, please?"
"He couldn't possibly harm him? Hahaha!" Li Wenjing roared at first, then her voice suddenly weakened and turned into a low whimper. "You know nothing... Gustav is no longer his father... He has harmed Dr. Gu so many times! If it weren't for him, Dr. Gu could have been a healthy and happy person..."
Then he said to Gustav, "Why did you come? He has already made his choice. What are you doing here?"
Blood rushed to her head with rage, bringing dizziness with it, shattering the world in her vision. Blackness washed over her, and her last bit of strength burned out, causing her to fall backwards. Before she fainted, Lu Cong supported her back, "Don't move around, don't get too excited. You seem to have a concussion, and you need to rest."
"don't want……"
Before she could refuse, he lifted her up in his strong arms and placed her on the bed next to him. His tone was unyielding, and he held her tightly, preventing her from getting up. As soon as she stood up, he pressed down on her shoulders.
"My dear aunt, please stop making trouble and worrying me! Doctor Gu is still lying down, and I have a lot of things to deal with. The first thing is to investigate what happened to your car accident. You'd be doing me a big favor by just staying here!"
Li Wenjing finally calmed down, relaxing in bed, tears streaming down her face again. Lu Cong's voice was like a taut string, "Alright, alright, I didn't say anything. I'm going to be out for a while, can you be by yourself for a while?"
Gustav, who had been by her side the entire time, stepped forward and said he would take care of Wenjing. He sat down by the bed and wiped her tears with his own hands; his cheeks were wet with tears as well.
"Can we have a good chat?" he asked in a low voice.
Lu Cong paused at the doorway, observing for a moment until Li Wenjing raised her eyes. Then he turned and left. When the two of them were left in the room, Gustav said, "I'm going to take him back after the surgery."
"impossible."
"I am his father and I have the right and responsibility to take care of him."
"You don't deserve it."
"It doesn't matter whether we're worthy or not. What matters is that I'm his father, both by blood and legally." He gripped the edge of the bed, veins bulging on his forehead as if they were about to split. "You! You're a mistake. You're hurting him!"
Li Wenjing, lying in bed, burst into a shrill laugh, tears streaming down her face as she laughed. She braced herself on the bed with her hands, raised her body, and gazed levelly at Gustav. In that moment, she suddenly felt that he was incredibly old. The charm, handsomeness, and wealth that had once made him so radiant had become meaningless here, in the face of life and death, completely vanished. Before her now was only a tired, sad, and stubborn old man.
