The bodyguard quickly started the car and sped towards Gu Qingyan's home. The atmosphere inside the car was unusually heavy; only Gu Qingyan's heartbeat and the sound of the wheels echoed.
Gu Qingyan's thoughts drifted back to every moment he and Xiao Wanqing had shared since childhood. Those heartwarming scenes, those sweet times, now turned into a deep pain in his heart. He hated himself for not protecting her, for letting her suffer such a tragic fate.
When I got home, neither of my parents were home, so I decided to avoid seeing them.
Gu Qingyan quickly walked into the bedroom. The moment he pushed open the door, he felt as if Xiao Wanqing's scent was still lingering in the air, which made his heart clench.
The wardrobe door slowly opened, revealing neatly arranged clothes and bags he had custom-made for Xiao Wanqing over the years. Some were clothes Xiao Wanqing had worn when she lived here; they still carried the scent of her favorite lilies, as if she had never left. But many others still had their tags on—gifts he had prepared for Xiao Wanqing for various holidays, which had now become his eternal regret.
He gently stroked the clothes, his fingers gliding over the soft fabric, a surge of indescribable sorrow welling up inside him. These clothes bore witness to his love and recorded his deep longing for Xiao Wanqing. Each garment seemed to carry her image, drawing him back into his memories.
As his fingers brushed over the garments, Gu Qingyan's gaze suddenly fell upon a cream-colored dress. It was one of Xiao Wanqing's favorite dresses; the last time she wore it was when she affectionately linked arms with him at an art exhibition. He picked up the dress, hugged it tightly to his chest, and tears streamed down his cheeks.
After a long time, he carefully folded the clothes and put them into an exquisite box. Then he opened a drawer, took out a photo frame inlaid with gemstones, and turned the photo frame over. Xiao Wanqing smiled sweetly.
"Wanqing, this is the gemstone photo frame you wanted that you saw online last time. I bought it for you, but I never thought I would never have the chance to hand it to you in person again." Gu Qingyan said to the photo frame in a low voice, his voice choked with emotion.
Gu Qingyan put the photo frame into the box, then packed some of Xiao Wanqing's favorite skincare and makeup products. He then turned and walked out of the room with the box in his arms, saying to the bodyguard, "Take me to the cemetery."
"Mr. Gu, let me take it." The bodyguard stepped forward and reached out to take the box from Gu Qingyan's hand.
But Gu Qingyan immediately turned his hand away, saying somewhat displeased, "I'll do it. Wanqing doesn't like others touching her things."
When they got downstairs, Gu Qingyan heard a sound she really disliked.
Sure enough, when he looked up, he saw Gu Ningning comfortably on the sofa in the living room, directing the housekeeper to serve her busily.
"Ningning, what are you doing here?" Gu Qingyan's expression was very bad, and his tone was naturally very unpleasant.
"I can come whenever I want, do you have a problem with that?" Gu Ningning curled the corners of her lips, picked up a small piece of mango with her fork and ate it, then said with a hint of smugness, "So you did come, but I heard your aunt kicked you out? You actually have the nerve to come back, brother, you're really shameless!"
Gu Qingyan's face immediately turned ugly, and he shouted loudly, "Butler, show the guests out!"
"Stop calling him, I've already asked him to do something else for me," Gu Ningning said with a smile, then her eyes lit up when she noticed the exquisite box in Gu Qingyan's hand.
She quickly ran to Gu Qingyan's side and asked curiously, "Brother, what are you holding? It looks very nice."
As she spoke, she couldn't resist reaching out to touch it, bending down to look at the box. Its exterior was inlaid with several perfectly cut diamonds, each sparkling with pure light. The front of the box was engraved with exquisite patterns, the lines flowing and elegant, showcasing the craftsman's superb skill in every detail. Sapphires, rubies, and emeralds were set among the patterns, their vibrant colors reflecting the white light of the diamonds, clearly indicating its considerable value.
"Brother, can I have this box?" Gu Ningning looked at it with a look of ecstasy, her eyes full of surprise and anticipation. "If you give it to me, I'll leave immediately and won't show up in front of you again for a while, okay?"
"Get your filthy hands off me!" Gu Qingyan uttered coldly, looking indifferently at Gu Ningning. "Get out of my way."
"Brother, why are you like this?" Gu Ningning pouted in dissatisfaction. "No matter how much we siblings have conflicts since we were little, you always calm down quickly, right? Why is it taking so long this time? Now that I'm back safely, I've already told my dad not to bother you anymore."
"Move aside." Gu Qingyan still didn't look at her, and turned to walk around her to go downstairs.
Gu Ningning got angry immediately, snatched the box from her hand, and ran away.
Gu Qingyan was completely unprepared for her to try and snatch it, so he was caught off guard. He sternly scolded, "Gu Ningning, give it back to me right now!"
But Gu Ningning had already taken off running.
She rushed frantically to the nearest room. Behind her, Gu Qingyan's furious roar sent chills down her spine. She flung open the door and locked it behind her.
Her heart pounded as she quickly opened the box that looked priceless. She had expected to find dazzling jewels inside, but instead, she was greeted by a photograph of Xiao Wanqing. Gu Ningning's face fell in disappointment.
Outside the door, Gu Qingyan's knocking grew more and more intense, but Gu Ningning ignored it. Looking at Xiao Wanqing's photo, a mocking smile curled at the corner of her lips: "Gu Qingyan is really generous to you. You're dead, yet he uses such a nice frame to hold your photo. What a waste!"
She opened the photo frame with a cold smile, and Xiao Wanqing's photo floated lightly to the ground.
She continued rummaging through the box, finding skincare products, clothes... one by one. But to her, these were nothing more than insignificant trinkets. Disdainfully, she dumped them all onto the floor, leaving only the exquisite box in her hands to admire it closely.
"Such good things are a waste to give to you." Gu Ningning muttered to herself, then stood up and stepped on Xiao Wanqing's clothes, grinding them hard as if this could relieve her anger.
Gu Qingyan, standing outside the door, was on the verge of exploding with rage. His furious roar was deafening: "Gu Ningning! Open the door for me! Give me back the box, or you're dead!" Every word was filled with threat and anger.
Gu Ningning trembled with fright and couldn't help but shrink back. But thinking that the doors of the Gu family were all of very high quality and that Gu Qingyan couldn't possibly break in anytime soon, she arrogantly provoked, "Gu Qingyan, come on in then! I must get what I want!"
No sooner had she finished speaking than a deafening bang came from outside the door—Gu Qingyan had angrily kicked the door open. Gu Ningning turned pale with fright, but she tried to remain calm and pulled out her phone to call for help.
Just then, the downstairs door opened.
