Chapter 55 Clarification

"Tell me, what's the deal with the gold?" the policeman asked Zhou Xiaoran with a serious expression.

A few hours ago, Zhou Xiaoran was watching a TV series at home wearing a pink cartoon-themed loungewear when the doorbell rang. She thought it was Gu Qingyan, that scumbag, coming back, but she didn't expect it to be the police who came to arrest her.

She remained in a daze until she sat down in the chilly interrogation room.

"I'm asking you a question!" The police officer tapped his finger impatiently on the table. The person who reported the case was the assistant to the president of the famous Gu Group in Nancheng. They didn't dare to delay and wanted to close the case as soon as possible.

Zhou Xiaoran shuddered, then looked up at the police officer with a blank expression. "What?"

"I'm talking about gold. Do you know that the gold you stole from President Gu was worth 8 million? That's enough to put you in jail for life. Confess honestly, when did you steal it, and did you have any accomplices?" The policeman slammed his hand on the table, threateningly.

"Mr. Gu? I didn't steal any gold! I didn't even know I had gold at home!" Zhou Xiaoran was completely baffled.

"Stop pretending! We found it in your suitcase on the floor of your bedroom! You're quite clever, putting it in an obvious place so no one would suspect anything." The policeman sneered. "The evidence is conclusive, so confess now!"

"Is it a red suitcase?" Zhou Xiaoran thought of the only red suitcase Shen Zhi Qiu had brought to her bedroom, so she asked tentatively.

"Otherwise, what color is it? I advise you to confess and you'll be treated leniently," the policeman said, frowning.

"That's not my suitcase! That's my friend's suitcase, officers. You've got the wrong person. I didn't steal it. My friend left it at my house temporarily!" Hearing the police's words, Zhou Xiaoran felt relieved.

"You really do have accomplices! Confess honestly." The policeman took out paper and pen and began to take notes.

"No, no!" Seeing that the police had misunderstood, Zhou Xiaoran quickly said, "My friend is Gu Qingyan's wife, and her name is Shen Zhi Qiu. They had a fight last time, and my friend ran away from home and came to stay at my house. She brought her suitcase with her, which should be joint property of the couple, so it doesn't involve theft."

The police officer frowned, glanced at Zhou Xiaoran suspiciously, and wondered whether her words were true or false.

The police officer stood up and said to Zhou Xiaoran, "Wait here for a while."

He opened the door and came out, seeing Huang Lin sitting in a chair with a worried look on his face. He walked over quickly and asked with a smile, "Assistant Huang, Zhou Xiaoran inside said that the gold was put in Mr. Gu's wife Shen Zhi Qiu's house, and that she didn't steal it."

Huang Lin quickly stood up, feigning confusion, "So, Zhou Xiaoran is indeed our young mistress's friend. Could it be that our young mistress really planted her?"

The police officer frowned. "According to regulations, we need Ms. Shen to come to the scene to prove that Zhou Xiaoran is innocent."

“Our young mistress has been having a cold war with President Gu lately and isn’t answering his calls. We’d like to trouble Miss Zhou to contact her. Oh dear, if that’s really the case, I’d be guilty beyond measure. We need to get in touch with our young mistress right away; we can’t wrong an innocent person,” Huang Lin said anxiously.

The police officer nodded and returned to the interrogation room. Although he still looked serious, his tone had softened considerably.

“Ms. Zhou, I have already consulted Mr. Gu’s assistant and confirmed that Shen Zhi Qiu is indeed your friend. But to verify what you said is true, we need you to contact Ms. Shen to testify for you.”

Even though Zhou Xiaoran was still confused, she understood why Gu Qingyan had called the police to arrest her, and she was absolutely furious.

She gritted her teeth. "Zhi Qiu recently went on a trip, and her phone is broken, so I can't contact her."

"Ms. Zhou, if that's the case, we'll have to detain you first," the police officer said sternly.

Zhou Xiaoran pursed her lips, silently cursing Gu Qingyan's ancestors for eighteen generations.

"How is it, officer? Has Zhou Xiaoran contacted our young mistress?"

Seeing the police come out, Huang Lin quickly went up to them and asked expectantly, "If we can get in touch this time, I can go home."

"Ms. Zhou said she can't be contacted. According to regulations, we need to detain Ms. Zhou." The policeman looked at Huang Lin with some doubt, unable to put his finger on what was wrong, but something just seemed off.

Huang Lin immediately deflated, as if all his energy had been drained. He thanked him softly and dragged his heavy steps outside. His expectations were dashed, and the fact that he knew the truth but couldn't tell anyone made him feel incredibly guilty.

He took out his phone and called Gu Qingyan.

"Have you made contact? Where is Shen Zhi Qiu?" Gu Qingyan asked in a light tone, certain that Zhou Xiaoran would contact Shen Zhi Qiu.

"Mr. Gu, Miss Zhou says she can't get in touch with the young mistress," Huang Lin said in a deep voice.

Gu Qingyan frowned. Could it be that Zhou Xiaoran really didn't know? But then he brought up a backup plan, instructing, "Release the news that the Gu family's 8 million gold has been stolen and the suspect has been arrested. But don't circulate Zhou Xiaoran's real name and photo. Moreover, if there is any movement from Shen Zhi Qiu, immediately remove this news to avoid damaging Zhou Xiaoran's reputation."

Huang Lin thought to himself, "If this gets out, you'll really be a terrible person."

In no time, news of the theft of gold from the Gu family, the discovery of stolen goods in a suitcase at the suspect's home, and the subsequent arrest of the suspect quickly became a trending topic.

Shen Zhi Qiu usually browses social media apps like Weibo to find inspiration for her writing, so she quickly came across this news and was immediately furious.

She knew very well that Gu Qingyan was trying to force her to show herself.

“You don’t necessarily have to go back to testify,” Lu Jia said after thinking for a moment. “If there is video evidence proving that you took the suitcase to Zhou Xiaoran’s house, her suspicion can naturally be cleared.”
