Chapter 64 Reconciliation
Tonight, the Nagano Winter Olympics officially opened.
After Ran and Sonoko were poisoned, Mr. Suzuki gave up completely and stopped trying to get the Black Swan Heart to appear in the opening ceremony program.
The enemy hiding in the shadows also disappeared without a trace.
Conan felt uneasy, believing that those people would not let the matter rest, but nothing came of it.
The young detective couldn't sit still any longer, so he left the hotel to go for a stroll.
Conan rode his skateboard slowly and aimlessly.
He could have gone to see the opening ceremony today. But since Sonoko and the others haven't been discharged from the hospital yet, everyone gave up their tickets.
For some reason, he still headed towards the main Olympic venue where the opening ceremony was about to be held.
Looking back, it can perhaps only be explained as a detective's intuition.
"Little friend, where are your parents?" A volunteer bent down and stopped Conan, who was strolling around. Judging from the armband on her uniform, she should be in charge of guiding tourists.
"Huh? Um, that..."
"Look, little brother, it's getting dark. There are a lot of people here at night, so don't get separated from the adults!" It seems that this volunteer is the same child Conan got lost back then.
"Mom and Dad went over there to buy things, they'll be back soon!" Conan said, adopting the serious demeanor typical of a child.
But the volunteers weren't so easily fooled: "Really? But why do I see you running around everywhere? Do you have a cell phone, little one?"
Yes, yes…
"Then call your parents and tell them to come to the C16 service point to pick you up after they finish shopping."
"Huh?"
Before the little detective could even react, a warm and considerate volunteer led him to the service point where she worked.
Left with no other option, Conan had to pretend to make a phone call to Dr. Agasa.
"What's your name, little brother?" Perhaps seeing that the boy was bored, the volunteer started chatting with Conan again.
"Conan Edogawa," Conan replied obediently.
"Conan? He sounds like a smart kid! Well then, let me test you. If you answer all the questions correctly, there'll be a reward!"
It was called an exam, but it was actually just a series of multiple-choice questions from the Organizing Committee to popularize background knowledge about the Winter Olympics. The questions were very simple.
Conan answered all 10 questions correctly in less than a minute.
"Conan-kun, you're amazing! Come here, let me give you your prize. It's a six-colored cat plush hat, and this is the last one in the smallest size, so it's perfect for you." The young woman said with a smile, and before Conan could respond, she put the hat on his head. "It fits you perfectly! You're such a cute little boy!"
Conan forced a childlike, innocent smile and said, "Big sister is so pretty too!"
"What a sweet little mouth!" The volunteer pinched the little boy's cheek and threw the cardboard box containing the cat hat into the trash can.
Only then did Conan notice a piece of paper on the table behind him that had been blocked from his view. As if a switch had been triggered inside him, the well-behaved boy instantly turned into a bear.
Conan scrambled onto the table, grabbing the paper in one swift motion.
He saw many strangely shaped, dancing little figures drawn on the paper, and his blood boiled!
"This is... a crime warning?!"
"Conan, what are you doing?" the girl asked angrily.
"Who put this here?" Conan asked anxiously.
"Huh? Let me think... It seems to be an advertising flyer handed out by the owner of a pastry shop. All the service points around here received it. We were just trying to figure out where that shop was!"
"when?"
"Oh, I don't remember exactly, maybe two or three hours ago?"
"Did you call the police?"
"Huh? Why are you calling the police? Little brother, this is a public area, posting ads here isn't illegal!"
"This isn't a flyer at all!" Conan shouted, jumping off the table and leaving everyone stunned. Wearing a cat hat and riding a skateboard, he sped off towards the Olympic main stadium.
Conan made a phone call to Takaaki while rushing to his destination.
"Officer Morofushi, someone is spreading crime notices near service point C16! According to the notices, the perpetrator's goal is to disrupt the opening ceremony, and the notices are posted at Gate 7 of the venue."
"Understood. I will notify the police to increase security. Conan, don't make any rash moves, wait for the police..."
But before Takaaki could finish speaking, Conan interrupted, "Inspector Morofushi, I've arrived."
Conan stood in front of Gate 7, deep in thought: Is it inside or outside?
If it's outside, that's fine, but if it's inside, he has neither a ticket nor a staff pass, so he can't get in!
Conan decided to check the situation outside first.
The opening ceremony had not yet started, and tourists were entering the venue one after another.
The young detective mingles among the crowd, searching for potential security threats.
What's really strange is that the flyer didn't specify what the criminal was supposed to do; it only gave an address and a vague time.
Conan deliberately searched for clues in the nooks and crannies outside the door.
Just as he was rummaging through the trash can, a deep male voice came from above: "What are you doing, kid?"
Conan was startled, and his cat ears perked up.
He looked up and saw a cleaner, so he pretended to be a child again: "Uncle, I lost a very important package." Subconsciously, Conan felt that the culprit was probably talking about a bomb.
When was it lost?
"About...uh, two hours ago?"
"That's really unfortunate. The trash here is collected every hour. You'll have to go to the recycling center to find it."
"Then, then it's fine..." In that case, the criminal probably wouldn't choose to hide the bomb here.
Just as Conan was about to leave, the cleaner took a piece of paper out of his pocket and asked, "Were you the one who came here to put this up just now?"
Conan was shocked when he saw the dancing figure on the paper: "When? Where was it found?"
"It was stuck on the back of the trash can two hours ago. I think it must be some kid's prank. Was it you or your friend?" the cleaner asked sternly.
"Sorry, there won't be a next time!" Conan grabbed the paper and ran off.
"Officer Zhu Fu, the situation has changed! This is a series of coded messages. The main Olympic venue is just a transit point. The next location indicated by the coded message is the youth hostel at the Olympic Resort. I'm on my way there immediately!"
"Conan, please be extremely careful. Wait until the police arrive..."
Conan suddenly lowered his voice and said, "Inspector Morofushi, I'm at the room door."
"What?!"
"Don't worry, I'll keep watch outside, you guys..."
Before Conan could finish speaking, the door opened, and a cat's head popped out: "Conan-kun, you're pretty fast!"
Conan took a moment to realize that he had been tricked.
"Officer Morofushi, it seems we don't need police assistance anymore. Sorry, goodnight."
Conan followed Jingguang into the room, but before he could even ask him a question, Jingguang came over with a plate.
"Conan-kun, it's my birthday today! Please have some lemon pie."
"Wait a minute, why... why..." Conan was so shocked he couldn't speak: So Mr. Public Security went through all that trouble to lure me here just to treat me to dessert?
The little detective, who had run a huge circle around the Olympic Sports Center, said he didn't understand.
Jingguang explained with utmost seriousness, "Because I think it's better to make your own birthday dishes. But the cooking conditions here aren't good, so we can't bake cakes. So we can only make lemon pie!"
That's not what I asked!
Jingguang blinked innocently: "Eh? Conan-kun doesn't like this detective game? I originally wanted to invite you directly, but the professor didn't know where you went, so I came up with this idea! I know that wherever there are codes and cases, there will definitely be Conan!"
Conan stared at the lemon pie and couldn't help but swallow loudly, the sound startling even himself.
What's even more infuriating is that my stomach also started growling.
Jingguang's smile widened: "You must be hungry after running for so long, right? Come and eat!"
"Um, I..." Conan stubbornly wanted to persist a little longer.
But Hiromitsu played his trump card: "I've always considered Conan-kun an important friend. But you won't even say happy birthday to me."
Happy birthday!
"Thank you! Here, have some! This piece was specially saved for you."
Conan hesitated for a moment before accepting the lemon pie.
Because Kagemitsu is absolutely right; given his current terrible relationship with Amuro, he wouldn't agree even if they called to ask.
However, since everyone has their own grievances and debts, he did not want to shift the blame for his conflict with Amuro onto Hino.
Since the other party invited him so sincerely, what reason did he have to refuse? It's just a birthday cake!
Conan cautiously took a bite, and that one small bite was enough to conquer his taste buds.
"It's so delicious!"
"I'm glad Conan likes it."
However, it wasn't until Conan took his third bite that he realized this was more than just a birthday cake.
Compared to the police's elaborate schemes, the young detective was as naive and inexperienced as an infant in this round.
"Conan, I know you and he had some disagreements a few days ago. I want to apologize on his behalf. It was our oversight regarding Ran and Sonoko. I'm sorry!"
The lemon pie in Conan's hand suddenly didn't taste so good anymore:
So the birthday was just a pretext! The real purpose was still that thing!
Conan saw that he had only taken three bites of the lemon pie. It would be too wasteful and rude of him to just walk away, especially since the lemon pie was really delicious...
He lowered his head and chewed slowly, nodding occasionally as if listening attentively.
“I think your deduction is correct; the organization did indeed deliberately poison the seafood. But I think you overlooked one point: Xiaolan and Youshu were both late, the dishes had already been served, and there was no opportunity for the waiters to tamper with the food.”
"How do you explain that Yuuki is alright?"
"Aren't you alright too?"
"Huh? I didn't go to eat!"
“I didn’t mean eating seafood.” Jing Guang cast a meaningful glance at him.
Conan suddenly realized something:
Drug A was supposed to kill me, but I didn't.
Seafood is poisonous, but Yushu was not poisoned.
Jingguang continued, "I investigated and found that Yushu had experienced similar situations twice before. People who ate with him suffered from food poisoning, but he remained unharmed."
"Natural resistance to toxins?"
“It’s not necessarily innate,” Jing Guang said, squinting.
"Huh? What do you mean?"
"Since the matter hasn't been investigated yet, let's not talk about it for now... Conan, would you like to talk about Ai Haibara?"
"Has the organization found her?"
"Yes, but that's not all. The FBI also wanted to take her away."
"FBI?!"
"Actually, there is some unofficial cooperation between the Public Security Bureau and the FBI. However, there are some problems with the cooperation between the two sides now. They want Ai and Akemi to join the witness protection program and be sent to the United States."
"Regarding the incident with Ms. Akemi last time, was it the FBI who attacked me from behind?"
Jing Guang chuckled, thinking to himself that this little guy really held a grudge: "Yes, that's right."
Do they want to go?
"Akemi wants to hear Ai's opinion, but Ai doesn't. However, the FBI doesn't have a direct channel to contact Ai, so..."
"So they don't believe what Hino-nii said, thinking it's a trick by the Public Security Bureau to detain the two sisters. Now the organization wants to kill Sherry, and the cooperation between the FBI, which was originally on the same side, has cracked. Everyone's target is Sherry, and if I don't stick with you, things will get really chaotic, right?" Conan concluded.
Jingguang nodded with satisfaction: "That's right. So what's your choice?"
"Compared to organizations and the FBI, the police are more reliable!"
"Has our image in your heart fallen to this level?" Jing Guang was quite hurt.
"But what do you want to do?"
"have no idea."
"Are you kidding me?!"
“I’m serious, which is why I asked you to come,” Jing Guang said solemnly. “I used to think that you and he had some similarities in personality. So I thought you would be a better choice to assist him. But it turns out I was wrong. Perhaps we should change the way we cooperate.”
"for example?"
"Is Conan interested in writing screenplays?"
"If I write it down, will you do it?"
"If you are a good enough screenwriter, then I would be happy to hire you as the director. You will be in charge of both the Public Security Bureau and the Metropolitan Police Department."
"Is it a deal?"
"It's a deal."
Conan happily finished the last bit of lemon pie and watched the opening ceremony on TV.
The dancers stretched out their arms, their graceful silhouettes reflected on the ice under the spotlight.
The little detective had a brilliant idea: "Brother Hino, I've got a wonderful idea!"
