Chapter 19: Ice and Snow Festival (I)

"God damn it, we've been invited to the 'Ice and Snow Conference'." The leader 'Hai' returned from hunting with his men. Hunting in winter meant they couldn't go far, so they just wandered around nearby to make sure they were back within a day.

"Then go." Ma Yue's previous incarnation remembered the so-called 'Ice and Snow Festival'. The Niupi tribe, known for being the largest and richest in the area, would convene one whenever they remembered. It would be held irregularly, sometimes once a year, sometimes every three to five years, and it was mostly a large-scale trade fair.

The problem is that it's winter, and it's so cold that most primitive people stay in their caves. It's difficult for them to go out. Of course, it's not realistic to stay in the cave at all in order to replenish food and find firewood.

Ma Yue once followed the chief Hai to the Niupi tribe and participated in a transaction. It was the first time that the Hai tribe traded pottery.

It was said that the "Ice and Snow Conference" held by the "Niupi" tribe in winter attracted a huge number of nearby tribes, and the scale of trade was even greater. However, Ma Yue's predecessor had never participated.

The "Ice and Snow Conference" is basically led by the leaders of various tribes. The "Niupi" tribe is indeed the richest tribe nearby. Whether it is advanced tools or precious pottery, they are all highly coveted and wanted to be exchanged by nearby tribes.

Many of the pottery and tools like bone shovels of the Hai tribe were exchanged for coarse salt.

Why does the "Niupi" tribe have so many furs in stock? Hai, the tribe's leader, has repeatedly brought coarse salt to trade there, always getting some furs in return. It seems the "Niupi" tribe has an endless supply of furs.

Ma Yue was very suspicious that the "Niupi" tribe was actually a transit point for commodities. Perhaps the "Niupi" tribe had long-term transactions with a more powerful and wealthy tribe.

Of course, the Hai tribe’s pottery-making technology alone is enough to make a living.

"Just me?"

"What do you mean? Shouldn't you go? You are the chief." Ma Yue was puzzled. What do you mean by 'Hai'?

"No, what I mean is that our Hai tribe may be involved in a large-scale transaction in this 'Ice and Snow Conference'." said the leader 'Hai'.

Ma Yue looked at the high priest and the second priest beside him. The leader "Hai"'s ability to express himself in language was still not as good as that of the high priest and the second priest.

"I understand what the chief means," the second priest said. "It's similar to our old Bear Tribe, with a population of over a hundred, including forty or fifty strong men. It's considered a fairly large tribe. A tribe of this size is the main force in the Ice and Snow Festival's trade, and it's also an opportunity to demonstrate strength..."

Ma Yue roughly understood it.

The Hai tribe used to be very small, with a total population of only about fifty people and thirteen strong laborers. It was a very small tribe. Even if it participated in the "Ice and Snow Conference", it would just be a bystander and had no sense of existence.

The current Sea Tribe is different. Having annexed the Bear Tribe and acquired a number of its members, it seems their population and combat effectiveness are even more impressive than the former Bear Tribe. Their status and position are different. If a major transaction were to occur, would Chief 'Sea' have the final say?

The current Hai Tribe is usually managed by two priests and three chiefs. However, the truly important decisions still fall under the dictate of the charlatan Ma Yue.

"Salt!" Everyone nodded. The only major transaction that the Sea Tribe could generate was coarse salt.

"I might as well go and take a look." Ma Yue said this, and the leader 'Hai' breathed a sigh of relief. This guy came from a small tribe and couldn't stand big scenes.

"The chief and I are going to the 'Ice and Snow Festival'. The safety of the tribe is in your hands. The appearance of salt will attract the attention of many tribes, so we must not let our guard down..."

Ma Yue gave some instructions, and the next morning, the team set out with a large amount of salt. Carrying salt did not require the troublesome clay pots; sewn leather bags were good and convenient.

Of course, you need to light a fire to cook soup on the road, so you must bring soup cooking tools such as ceramic basins.

Including Ma Yue, the second priest, and the leader, Hai, the total number of the Sea Tribe was twenty-seven, which was not a small number. If there were more, Ma Yue would worry about the safety of his lair.

Fortunately, the men and women, young and old in the tribe often practiced throwing stones and throwing spears, so even adults could participate in the defensive operations behind the wall. Even if the enemy attacked, the defense was still guaranteed.

Even without snow, there is still a lot of snow in the jungle. In some places, the snow is knee-deep. It is really inconvenient to travel in the winter.

With such a difficult road ahead, why would so many small tribes be so eager to participate in the "Ice and Snow Festival" held by this "cow leather" tribe? Is it more than just a simple transaction?

However, the Second Priest, who was originally from a large tribe, hadn't mentioned anything special about it, so Ma Yue stopped imagining things. He thought, "Wouldn't he know after he got there and participated once?" Could the "Niupi" tribe dare to surround and kill him at the gate of their own tribe?

Ma Yue was a cultivator, but he wasn't invulnerable. If a barrage of flying spears came hurling at him, such an indiscriminate attack, no matter how skilled his maneuvering skills were, he would be hit. Ma Yue was only a low-level cultivator, not a god.

In this primitive society, group fights are very scary, so Ma Yue would not easily go out to participate in hunting.

Have they developed some kind of shield? A metal shield is out of the question, but a wooden one would be fine? At least it could protect against ranged attacks, right?

The tribe already has quite a few sharp stone knives, bone knives, and the like, so it should be no problem to carve some rough and simple shields.

The team was not moving fast, but fortunately with the help of the magician Ma Yue, there was no shortage of fire. Even if they camped at night, a few bonfires could keep them warm and safer.
