Chapter 14
In the corner.
A man's white shirt was stained and mottled, and there was a cut on his chest from a sharp weapon.
He was leaning against the wall with his eyes closed, looking miserable and lonely.
Hearing the faint sound of footsteps, he instantly opened his eyes. His dark eyes were deep and dangerous, and the muscles in his arms were taut, as if he were a cheetah ready to leap up and bite someone to death at any moment.
"Mr. Xiao!"
As Jiang Wanwan walked in, she was shocked to discover that the man in the alley was the same man who had donated ten million to their school. She couldn't help but exclaim in surprise.
Upon hearing the woman's voice, Xiao Mingzhu loosened his grip, but he hadn't completely released his tension.
"You are...Teacher Jiang?" he asked in a hoarse voice.
"It's me!" Jiang Wanwan was pleasantly surprised to see that the man still remembered her, but she quickly noticed the bloodstains on his chest and ran over to him.
"Mr. Xiao, what's wrong?" Jiang Wanwan tried to reach out to help him up, but her wrist was suddenly grabbed, causing her to wince in pain.
Xiao Mingzhu seemed a little slow to realize what was happening. After a moment of hesitation, he let go of her hand. "Save me, don't take me to the hospital, you can give me whatever reward you want."
Before he could finish speaking, Jiang Wanwan anxiously interrupted him: "How can you not go to the hospital? You've lost so much blood."
A look of worry flashed across the woman's face, and her tone carried a hint of firmness, as if she had already made up her mind to take the man to the hospital for treatment.
Xiao Mingzhu's mind was already foggy. He had just been helped up by the woman, and upon hearing the words beside him, he immediately flung his arm away and mumbled, "Don't go to the hospital... I won't go..."
Caught off guard, Jiang Wanwan was suddenly pushed down and staggered a few steps before regaining her balance.
She frowned slightly, wanting to accuse the man of being completely ungentlemanly, only to find that he wasn't much better off.
The man, having lost his footing, fell headfirst to the ground with a thud.
Looking at the man who had fallen into a coma, Jiang Wanwan couldn't stay angry. "Sigh, I must have owed you something in my past life."
First, she was asked to take him around the campus like a tour guide, and now she has encountered him injured near his home.
Now that she had seen it, Jiang Wanwan couldn't just sit idly by, since her parents had instilled extremely high moral values in her since she was a child.
Left with no other choice, she had to help the man up again. She recalled that he must have had his reasons for insisting on not going to the hospital, since wealthy people like them also had many enemies.
Jiang Wanwan had previously volunteered at the Red Cross, so she took a quick look at the man's wound and concluded that it was just a superficial injury.
So, after hesitating for a while, she finally brought the man back to the rented apartment.
Back home, Jiang Wanwan helped the other person to the sofa, then took out the first-aid kit and began to treat his wounds.
Having received professional training at the Red Cross, Jiang Wanwan quickly bandaged the wound.
"The second bedroom hasn't been cleaned yet, so you'll have to make do here for the night."
Jiang Wanwan closed the lid of the first-aid kit, wiped the man's face with a hot towel, took out a blanket from the cabinet and covered him with it, before returning to her own room.
The next morning, Jiang Wanwan stretched and lazily sat up in bed.
Monday is every working person's nightmare, and Jiang Wanwan is no exception.
She yawned widely, looking sleepy, and slowly began to change her clothes.
Jiang Wanwan was startled when she opened the bedroom door and saw the man sleeping on the sofa.
It took me a long time to recall everything that happened yesterday.
Time was tight in the morning, and she couldn't wait for him to wake up, so she wrote a note and stuck it on the coffee table, explaining a few things briefly and leaving her phone number.
After washing up, she took a bag of bread from the kitchen and placed it next to the note. She originally intended to use it as a snack, since she usually ate at the school cafeteria and didn't have much food at home.
Although she didn't know if the other person would eat it, it at least showed her attitude as the hostess, and she understood the basic etiquette of hospitality.
Lu Dachuan and the others were already knocking on the door, urging her to come. "Coming!" Jiang Wanwan quickly changed her shoes, pushed open the door, and went out.
Jiang Wanwan didn't receive any phone calls all day at school. At first, she was a little worried about the man at home, but when she thought about his identity and status, she figured he would have sent someone to pick him up by now that he was awake.
Just as she was about to leave work, Jiang Wanwan's phone suddenly rang.
She picked it up and saw that it was a call from Jiang's mother.
"Hey Mom, what's wrong?"
Are you off work yet?
"I'll be there soon, is there anything I can help you with?"
"Go straight to the restaurant after you get off work. Tonight, my daughter and I will eat out."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Wanwan looked somewhat surprised. Her mother had always advocated healthy eating, so she rarely went to restaurants. Why was the sun rising in the west today?
Before Jiang Wanwan could ask any further questions, the person on the other end seemed to already know what she was going to say.
"What? You're not happy that you've earned money to treat your mother to a meal?"
Hearing her mother's question, Jiang Wanwan was both amused and exasperated. "If you're willing, I'd love to take you to eat all the delicious food in the world."
The woman on the other end seemed amused by Jiang Wanwan's words and said happily, "Alright, I'm hanging up now."
After ending the call, Jiang Wanwan glanced at the restaurant location sent to her phone and began packing her things.
"Wanwan, do you have something to do today?" Lu Dachuan asked, somewhat surprised, as he saw Jiang Wanwan preparing to leave as soon as she got off work.
Because even though it's time to leave work, Jiang Wanwan usually stays a while before leaving, to finish the work she's currently doing.
Jiang Wanwan nodded and told him that she was going to have dinner with her mother later.
Lu Dachuan instantly understood, grinning with his big white teeth as he instructed, "Remember to say hello to Aunt Fang for me."
Jiang Wanwan smiled and agreed.
When they arrived at the restaurant, Jiang's mother was already looking at the menu.
Upon seeing Jiang Wanwan, she waved and said, "You're here." As she spoke, she pushed the menu across the table, indicating that Jiang Wanwan should order.
"My dad didn't come?" Jiang Wanwan looked around and asked in confusion.
Jiang's mother raised her eyelids slightly. "Your dad has gone out drinking with his buddies again. Don't mind him. It's just the two of us today."
"Oh, okay." Jiang Wanwan didn't stand on ceremony and ordered a few of her favorite dishes. She knew that her mother didn't like to order, so she specially ordered a few of her favorite dishes for her.
This is a hot pot restaurant. Although it is called "Old Sour Scholar," it is famous for its spicy soup base.
Jiang Wanwan, taking into account her mother's taste, specially ordered a hot pot with two broths.
A red and a white hot pot base were brought out, followed by plates of side dishes that filled the table.
Halfway through their meal, Jiang's mother suddenly changed the subject, saying, "Wanwan, your Uncle Zhang's son is about your age and doesn't have a girlfriend either. Would you like to get to know each other sometime?"
Jiang Wanwan was enjoying her meal when she heard her mother's words. She choked and quickly took a sip of her drink.
"Mom, he and I aren't a good match."
Uncle Zhang was Jiang's father's boss and old classmate. She had also met his son once by chance, and he was not her type at all.
Jiang's mother put down her chopsticks, frowned, and said, "How do you know it's not suitable if you don't even go and meet him? Besides, he's lost weight now and is very handsome."
"Fine, I don't want to go."
She really didn't like Uncle Zhang's son, and she wasn't interested in him right now. Besides, as someone who was obsessed with looks, she really couldn't agree with the handsome guy her mother described.
"In your eyes, as long as a man has all the right features, he's handsome," Jiang Wanwan couldn't help but complain.
"You can't just look at a man's appearance, do you understand?"
"Then why did you contact my dad in the first place?"
When Jiang's father was young, he was quite handsome. It is said that many girls in school were eager to give him love letters and bring him breakfast.
Upon hearing this, Jiang's mother choked up. Looking at Jiang Wanwan, who remained unmoved by reason, she said with slight annoyance, "So it's my fault for misjudging people back then. Your father is still a junior employee, while those who are about his age have long since become leaders."
Jiang Wanwan pursed her lips, knowing in her heart that although her mother said that, she was still very satisfied with Gu's father, even though he earned less money, which did not satisfy Jiang's mother's vanity.
Seeing Jiang Wanwan's indifferent expression, Jiang's mother subconsciously wanted to raise her voice and put on the airs of an elder to continue persuading her. But then she suddenly remembered her husband's words that Jiang Wanwan responded better to gentle persuasion than force, so her attitude softened again.
"Wanwan, I'm doing this for your own good. Look, you're already 24. When I was your age, I was already married to your dad. Think about it, dating takes at least a year, then there's engagement, marriage, having kids, how old will you be by then?"
Listening to her mother's incessant nagging, Jiang Wanwan felt a headache coming on. She silently lit a candle for her ears and took a bite of the freshly served dessert.
However, before her ears could be completely ravaged by Jiang Mu, she was startled by another loud, angry shout. Even Jiang Mu, who had been chattering incessantly, stopped and turned to look at the source of the sound.
At the restaurant entrance, a male waiter appeared to be having a conflict with a food delivery driver. The waiter was agitated and hurling insults at the driver.
Through their argument, Jiang Wanwan realized that the delivery guy was in a hurry to deliver the order and kept urging the male waiter, who then got annoyed by the urging.
"Can you fucking wait a minute? I already told you the kitchen isn't ready yet!" The male waiter, a young man, roared out of control.
Jiang Wanwan was sitting at a table not far from the entrance, so she was shocked.
The delivery guy was probably already late, but he still wouldn't give up and asked the male waiter to help urge the kitchen staff.
At this point, the waiter finally snapped. He threw the towel in his hand on the ground and yelled, "You believe I'll kill you? I'm fucking quitting!"
After saying that, he rushed into the kitchen, took out a cleaver, and chased after the delivery guy at the door.
The gleaming blade flashed before Jiang Wanwan's eyes, and her breath caught in her throat. It was the first time she had ever seen such a scene, and her hands trembled uncontrollably. She was frozen in place, terrified.
She looked around and found that the other guests were watching the scene indifferently, but no one stood up to stop it.
