The latter was at a loss for words. Lin Yan, in an attempt to maintain her own image, blurted out sentences without thinking.
She was particularly sensitive to people’s gazes at this moment, feeling that something was off. She had no time to signal with Yu Ting effectively. After grinding her teeth in annoyance at Yu Ting, she dragged He Feiyan to queue for the books distribution.
The discussion stopped as the two key figures, Yu Ting and Lin Yan, dispersed. By 6 pm, the line started to move and people left one after another with their books.
When it was nearly Yu Ting and Ning Xuan’s turn, a peek out of the queue revealed that not only was there more textbooks for this term than last, but they were also thicker. Just the Discrete Maths textbook was over eight hundred pages.
Given the weight of the full set of textbooks, even some male undergraduates struggled to carry them. It was more of a struggle for the females who had to place some textbooks in their backpacks and clutch the rest in their arms to move them.
A collective wail filled the air.
The commotion at the language building soon attracted quite a few onlookers. Even Lu Nanchen, who was out digesting his dinner by strolling with several older professors within university grounds, spotted Yu Ting amidst the throng.
He glanced around.
She was collecting her textbooks.
He looked at the people who had already received their textbooks and were leaving.
And there were still many books.
"Hmm? Little Lu, what are you looking at?" The old professor noticed Lu Nanchen suddenly halted and asked in bewilderment.
"It seems my wife is busy over there. Professor Peng, please continue your walk. I’ll go over and see." Lu Nanchen nodded to him and then left.

"Yu Ting, isn’t Professor Lu coming over to help you with the books? They are really heavy." A few class fellows started to tease.
If this had happened before, they would have helped her. But now that she was married, it was best to keep their distances.
Resorting to lending a hand only if absolutely necessary.
"Right, quickly get Professor Lu to help you with the books." The fellows teasingly joined in the hubbub with casual amusement.
Yu Ting simply smiled and didn’t respond, confident in her own strength.
When it was their turn, Ning Xuan slid several books from Yu Ting’s pile onto her own, a sight eerily familiar.
"Who needs men!"
Lu Nanchen, who just arrived: ?
"I can do this too."
Lu Nanchen: ...
By the time Lu Nanchen arrived, he saw Ning Xuan effortlessly standing with her pile of books. Beside her was Yu Ting, also at ease with her pile of books. They exhibited no indication of frailness nor shyness that was usually associated with young girls. 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶

She was quite astonished to find Lu Nanchen at this place instead of the faculty dormitory.
"I was taking a stroll along with a few professors around the campus when I saw you here, so I came." Lu Nanchen explained. Under the scrutiny of onlookers, he approached them and offered, "Allow me."
With that, he took over the books Yu Ting had hugged in her arms.
Yu Ting, now empty-handed, did not forget to share some of Ning Xuan’s burden.
Then Lu Nanchen took the few books from her again.
Yu Ting went back to take books from Ning Xuan’s pile.
Lu Nanchen, once again, relieved Yu Ting of her books.
Back and forth, by the end Yu Ting and Ning Xuan both had their hands free while all the textbooks were in Lu Nanchen’s possession.
The three of them then walked towards the girls’ dormitory.
