"Hahaha."
Lu Xiaobao’s words successfully made three people burst into laughter. Yu Ting smiled as she gently touched Xiaobao’s head, appreciating the cuteness of his actions.
Meanwhile, Lu Nanchen brought two cups of tea from the kitchen and placed them on the coffee table next to the sofa for the parents.
Upon seeing Lu Nanchen, his mother hurriedly waved him over. She excitedly said, "Come here, we mainly wanted to discuss some things with you. Could you grab a pen and paper, and take notes while I talk?"
"Okay."
Once Lu Nanchen had retrieved pen and paper, a conversation lasting over half an hour began.
Four adults were seated in the living room. As Madam Lu spoke, Lu Nanchen jotted down notes. Instead of his usual flowing and elegant handwriting, he was using orderly, clear block letters.
Lu Xiaobao had been sternly instructed by his parents and uncle and aunt not to cause any trouble for his sister-in-law. And he obediently complied, lying over the coffee table watching Lu Nanchen’s pen dance across the paper.
He could recognize each individual character, but he couldn’t understand them when strung together into sentences.
The morning sun offset the harmony with a scorching heat that found its way through the window onto them. The two women carried on the conversation, while Lu Nanchen focussed on jotting notes. Looking at this scene made Yu Ting burst into laughter.
After almost half an hour of discussing dietary advice and precautions, the parents circled around Yu Ting. The conversation stretched from midday well into the evening dinner. Only then did the two parents leave, taking Lu Xiaobao with them.
Lu Xiaobao stood at the door, though his hand was held by his grandmother, his whole body leaned towards Yu Ting and Lu Nanchen. He moistened his lips repeatedly, making them shimmer in the light.
"Aunt, can’t I stay with brother and Little Saosao? Xiaobao is on summer break."
"No, if you stay here, your brother and sister-in-law have to take care of you. Your sister-in-law should rest now."
"Alright then, I’ll come another day."
"No, Xiaobao can only stay overnight with his brother and sister-in-law again after your nephew is born," Madam Lu further added. Lu Xiaobao’s delicate and adorable face crumpled in sadness, as he clutched his shirt tightly in disappointment.
That was still a long way off.
After several minutes of contemplation, Lu Xiaobao made up his mind and declared, "Alright, alright! Xiaobao is leaving! I am going! I am going!"
His last sentence seemed to be more for himself than anyone else. The four adults found it extremely amusing and broke into laughter.
Only then did Madam Lu and Madam Yu officially leave with Lu Xiaobao in between them.
"Now Xiaobao, go home and start saving red envelopes for your little nephew."
Yu Ting’s mother jokingly asked, "How do you plan to save up?"
"Helping mom with chores. Sweeping the floor would earn me 2 yuan, taking out the trash 2 yuan, folding the quilt 3 yuan, hehe."
The late evening shadows stretched out and Xiaobao went back home with a new purpose, sweeping the floor three times a day.
Two days later.
Yu Ting, who had landed a diaper brand endorsement deal, went with Lu Nanchen to the client’s photo studio for a photoshoot. The schedule required them to pose for a few shots and deliver a few lines for the brand.
Yu Ting arrived without any makeup on. She changed into the clothes provided by the brand and had her hair styled. She then received the script for her lines.
