Chapter 4 The Little Princess is Poisoned

She said weakly, "How long has it been since I called you that?"

Da Yu'er turned her clear black and white eyes around and said, "Ever since you thought I put safflower in the medicine, you haven't called me that. It's been about a year."

"So long?"

Hailanzhu was confused when she was suddenly hugged tightly by Dayuer.

She cried out, "When we were little, we encountered a snake on the grassland, and you protected me behind you just like you did now." Her tears fell like broken kite strings onto Hailanzhu's shoulder.

"Silly Yu'er, we are sisters, even if our bones are broken, our tendons are still connected. How can I just stand by and watch you be in danger?" Hailanzhu patted Dayu'er's shoulder to comfort her.

"Sister..." Da Yu'er sobbed uncontrollably.

After this little setback, Dayuer was no longer as distant as before, and kept talking about the things that happened when the two of them were children.

Hailanzhu was not the original owner of the body, so she naturally did not know about the past of the two. She could only listen to Dayuer's endless chatter and occasionally chime in with a few words.

After Da Yu'er finished speaking, Hailanzhu finally understood why the three of them, aunt and niece, had all married Huang Taiji. It was all the will of the entire Khorchin.

At first, Zhe Zhe gave birth to three daughters in a row. In feudal times, having no son meant having no heir. Therefore, they sent the thirteen-year-old Dayuer into the palace. However, Dayuer also gave birth to three daughters in a row without a son.

The Borjigit family panicked, and since there were no young girls left in the clan, they resorted to marrying Hailanzhu, who had been widowed for many years, to Huang Taiji as a temporary measure to stabilize the clan's position.

Originally, he only wanted Hailanzhu to carry on the family line, but who would have thought that Huang Taiji would be so deeply in love with her? Ever since Hailanzhu entered the palace, he has rarely favored anyone else.

Upon hearing this, Hailanzhu sighed deeply, "Everything is predestined, and nothing is up to us."

Da Yu'er also sighed, "He is our uncle. If I had a choice, I would definitely not marry him."

From Da Yu'er's words, it is clear that she had no love for Huang Taiji at all, and was only after the glory of her family.

If one is heartless, how can there be any talk of jealousy? Unfortunately, the original owner never listened to Da Yu'er's explanation.

Just as Da Yu'er was about to recount her experiences after entering the palace, she was startled by a shout from outside the door: "Your Majesty! Something terrible has happened..."

The two exchanged a glance, both looking puzzled, unsure whose voice it was.

Hailanzhu then led Dayuer to the door and asked, "What happened?"

The palace maid knelt on the ground, trembling as she said, "The little princess suddenly foamed at the mouth and fainted!"

"What?" Da Yu'er almost lost her balance, but luckily Hai Lanzhu caught her.

"Quickly! Lead the way!" Hailanzhu ordered anxiously.

The two quickly arrived at the little princess's room. Hailanzhu looked at the three-year-old girl in front of her, whose lips were blue, and frowned. She was even more annoyed because she could tell that the child had been poisoned.

She clenched her fists in anger at how wicked people could be, not even sparing a three-year-old girl.

As the mother of the young princess, Da Yu'er was heartbroken to see her child in such a state, but she still held back her tears and asked, "Imperial Physician, how is the child?"

The imperial physician bowed respectfully and said, "Your Highness, the little princess's symptoms suggest that she has ingested mercury. Fortunately, she has not ingested much, and her life will be safe after she vomits."

Da Yu'er frowned. "How could there be mercury out of nowhere?"

The imperial physician wiped the sweat from his brow: "This... Your humble servant does not know either."

Seeing that the imperial physician could not give her an answer, Da Yu'er turned to look at the palace maid who had just delivered the report, "Su Mo'er, what's going on?"

Su Mo'er knelt down with a thud, "This servant doesn't know either, just a moment ago the little princess was perfectly fine, and the next moment..."

Da Yu'er trembled with anger, "You... what use are you to me!"

Su Mo'er was only a fifteen-year-old girl, and when she saw Da Yu'er get angry for the first time, she was so frightened that her eyes filled with tears.

At this moment, Hailanzhu, being an observer, still retained some rationality and asked, "Tell me, before the little princess fainted, did she encounter anyone or take anything?"

Su Mo'er looked up at Hailanzhu and said, "She hasn't encountered anyone else." After thinking for a moment, she added, "But the little princess took a fan before she fainted."

After saying this, she got up, hurriedly went outside to pick up a pear-shaped silk fan from the ground, handed it to the imperial physician, and knelt down again.

The imperial physician sniffed the fan from a distance, his expression immediately turning panicked, his lips trembling as he exclaimed, "There's...mercury on the fan!"

There was indeed mercury on the fan, but it didn't seep out from the handle; instead, it seeped directly into the little princess's body through the fan ribs.

Only someone with extremely deep cunning could come up with such a thing.

"Where did this fan come from?" Da Yu'er questioned Su Mo'er loudly.

Su Mo'er didn't dare to look up, and said weakly, "It was because the little princess felt it was too hot, so she rummaged through the storeroom, and..."

"Speak your mind!" Da Yu'er's patience was also limited.

"And this fan was a gift from Consort Chen half a month ago." Su Mo'er mustered her courage to finish speaking, and dared not look at Hailanzhu even more.

Hailanzhu was so surprised that her eyes almost popped out; this fire was actually going to burn her.

But she had no idea how to explain it, since it was still impossible to determine whether it was really the original owner's doing.

She looked at Da Yu'er with unease and apprehension.

But Da Yu'er said, "Sister, I believe you. You wouldn't do that, much less openly poison someone."

With just a simple sentence, Hailanzhu couldn't help but look at Dayuer with new respect. Both of them were framed, but Dayuer chose to believe her, which made the original owner seem somewhat petty.

Hailanzhu breathed a slight sigh of relief, reached out and took Dayuer's hand, gently stroking the jewels in her long hair, and said softly, "Compared to you, I am ashamed of myself."

She said this on behalf of the original owner of the body.

Da Yu'er shook her head slightly, "Sister, you don't need to say that. When you were in Guanju Palace, you risked your life to protect me. I knew then that you were not a vicious person."

Hailanzhu's eyes reddened slightly, but this was out of guilt, because she had risked her life to save Dayuer in order to cling to her coattails, not out of her own intention.

To distract herself from her anxiety, she said to the imperial physician, "The poison has been neutralized, so why hasn't the little princess woken up yet?"

The imperial physician raised his head slightly and replied, "If it were an adult, they would naturally wake up immediately, but the little princess is too young and needs to rest quietly for a day before she can wake up."

"Yes." Hailanzhu nodded. "Since the princess needs to rest, you may all leave now!"

"Yes!" the imperial physician replied respectfully.

Su Mo'er and the imperial physician then withdrew together.

Once only Hailanzhu, Dayuer, and their daughter remained in the room, she whispered, "Sister, have you considered that this poison was administered by someone close to you?"
