Chapter 11 My Fierce Wife
The next day, Ji Huaizhi dragged a bundle of firewood downstairs, but he was too embarrassed to deliver it to the Feng family.
Afraid of gossip, they tied the firewood up and had Douzi and the other kids drag it over. The children worked together to drag the firewood to the Feng family's door.
They happened to run into Feng Qiaoxiang, who was riding her bicycle home after get off work.
"What are you doing?" She skillfully got out of the car.
"Dog's dad asked us to deliver this, Sister Qiaoxiang, could you take it inside for a moment?" Douzi was too embarrassed to enter someone else's house and thought she would have to wait at the door for a while.
"Dog's dad?" Feng Qiaoxiang looked at Ji Gou'er, whose nose was running from the cold.
Her little hands, covered in chilblains from the cold, were still sticking out. When she saw her, she smiled and called out "Sister!"
"Come in and warm yourself by the fire."
Douzi shook her head, pulling at her younger siblings, "No, we want to go back."
After saying that, he dropped the firewood and ran away. Ji Gou'er had short legs, and when he was being pulled along, he lost his balance and fell. He looked like he had fallen pretty hard.
Tears welled up in her eyes from the pain, even though she didn't want to cry.
Douzi saw her younger sister fall and her face showed panic: "Sister."
I'm doomed, I'm going to get scolded and talked about.
"Slow down, slow down." Feng Qiaoxiang picked Ji Gou'er up: "Did you fall? Oh, your hands are covered in chilblains, they look so pitiful."
Ji Gou'er stopped crying after being comforted by her.
I just stared at her blankly. This older sister is so kind; her hands are so warm.
"Come inside and I'll put some frostbite cream on you." Feng Qiaoxiang tried to pull her inside, but Ji Gou'er shook her head:
"I'm going back now, goodbye sister." With that, she ran off.
Actually, her chilblains on her hands had cleared up after her dad applied something cooling, but they've come back these past two days after she played with ice with her older siblings outside.
She secretly glanced back at Feng Qiaoxiang, and seeing that the other woman was still looking at her, she blushed and ran even faster.
Douzi and the others caught up: "Doggy, why are you running?"
"Are you alright? Don't tell my mom, or she'll scold me again." He clasped his hands together in a gesture of apology.
"I won't tell on you," Ji Gou'er said in a sticky voice.
Bean was touched: "You are such a good sister to me."
"Brother Douzi, why does Sister Qiaoxiang call your mother 'sister-in-law,' but you still call her 'sister'?" Ji Gou'er asked, puzzled.
"Because she felt that other titles were too old-fashioned, she wanted all the village children to call her 'sister'."
Ji Gou'er nodded: "She's such a good older sister."
Douzi pouted: "You only think she's good because you just met her. Everyone in the village calls her a tigress. She's really fierce when she hits and curses people!"
The tigress Feng Qiaoxiang told her mother that the Ji family's children had brought a bundle of firewood, saying that Ji Huaizhi had sent them.
After listening, Mrs. Feng glanced at it and nodded: "Keep it."
Mr. Feng washed his hands with ice-cold water, then looked up at him and asked, "You really want him to be your son-in-law?"
Feng Qiaoxiang's eyes widened: "What did you say, Dad?"
Mr. Feng snorted: "Your mother has such a scheming mind. She even went to the next village to inquire about Ji Huaizhi's family. Zhang Xiuhua even spoke up yesterday."
Two scenes flashed through Feng Qiaoxiang's mind: the first time he lay on the cart and the time she delivered rice cakes.
Knowing her daughter was headstrong, Feng's mother repeated what Zhang Xiuhua had said yesterday: "You've met his daughter, haven't you?"
"How are you feeling? You've met so many people but haven't found anyone you like."
Feng Qiaoxiang was also somewhat confused: "Those who like me, I don't like; those I like, don't like me."
"I don't want to look at any more dates."
As he said this, his head drooped.
Feng's mother felt sorry for her daughter's bumpy marriage, blaming it all on that shameless family, and also on their failure to see from the beginning that they were no good.
“Actually, what your embroidery aunt said makes sense. As long as you get rid of the Ji family over there, you will be the one in charge when you marry into the family. Besides, I have met that boy and he has clear eyes. He is a hard worker.”
"Life won't be too difficult."
Feng Qiaoxiang looked up: "It's all you elders saying this. What if the other person doesn't mean it that way?"
"And didn't you say his wife abandoned him and the kids? Will she ever come back?"
"Besides, is he really willing to separate the family? What if he's easily swayed?"
She wasn't afraid of those troublesome people; Feng Qiaoxiang was even more troublesome than them.
If the other party is interested, she'd really like to talk to them.
Mother Feng: "Should we try to gauge Zhang Xiuhua's opinion? Give us a definite answer?"
Feng Qiaoxiang was no longer a young girl, and nodded: "Okay, if it's possible, I'll go and talk to him about those questions I just asked."
"What's a young lady like you talking to a man about? Your mother can handle it."
Feng Qiaoxiang: "I go by myself. I've met so many men, and I can tell what kind of people they are just by talking to them."
Zhang Xiuhua opened Ji Huaizhi's door, holding a roasted potato in her hand: "Gou'er, go out and play with your brother."
"Your great-aunt wants to talk to your father for a while."
Ji Gou'er climbed off the bed, and Ji Huaizhi also got off the bed: "Auntie."
The two sat by the window, and Zhang Xiuhua talked to him like a mother to Ji Huai:
"Your aunt is not asking you to leave, but to ask what your plans are for the future. You're not a child anymore, and a grown man raising a child will inevitably have many things he can't take care of."
“Aunt, just say it. I know you and Uncle mean well,” Ji Huaizhi replied softly.
Zhang Xiuhua also said directly, "Your uncle and I want to arrange a marriage for you. It's with Feng Qiaoxiang, whom you've met in our village. Her mother and your mother are good friends. I mentioned it before. She talked to me today and asked me a few key questions."
"I guess they meant that, but they probably had some reservations about your dad's side."
Ji Huaizhi remained silent.
Zhang Xiuhua had no choice but to continue, "Do you still plan to live with your father in the future? If you don't want to, your three uncles will definitely fight for it for you. If you still want to be filial, then I won't care about you anymore, and I won't mention this marriage again."
Ji Huaizhi shook his head: "Aunt, I have a worthless life, but I can't drag my daughter into this swamp. I'm completely disillusioned with that place, and I want to sever ties with them."
Zhang Xiuhua's eyes lit up. It was good that he had this idea: "Don't mention severing ties. If you do, you'll be committing a heinous crime."
"When the time comes, just say you're separating the family property. Your dad's too old to care."
Anyway, Ji Huaizhi has been working at home for so many years, so this can be considered as fulfilling his filial duty ahead of schedule.
Even if lightning strikes down, it won't come down.
