Chapter 7 The Heartless and Unfeeling Top Scholar
"Qiaolian, go down and do this..." Jiang Xinyue gestured for Qiaolian to come closer.
After Ji Huaizhi left, Shen Zhiyi seemed to have lost her soul.
She held in her hand the amulet that Ji Huaizhi had given her before he left.
I obtained this amulet by chance; you must never let it out of your sight. If anything unexpected happens, it can help you turn misfortune into good fortune.
Shen Zhiyi looked at the talisman in her palm, a faint smile appearing on her lips.
She never imagined that Ji Lang would believe these things.
When Hongyin came in, she saw the young lady sitting there looking at the things the young master had given her, and couldn't help but tease her: "Miss, are you missing the young master?"
"You're being cheeky again." Shen Zhiyi glared at her, feigning anger. "Judging by the time, my husband should have already arrived in the capital."
"Yes, Miss, would you like to send a letter to the young master?"
Shen Zhiyi thought for a moment and shook her head: "Never mind, it seems we're about to set off soon. We'll just send a letter before we leave."
After arriving in the capital, Ji Huaizhi entered one of the Six Ministries as a principal officer, mainly in charge of household registration and finance in the Ministry of Revenue.
With the huge sum of money given by Master Shen, he was able to thrive in the Ministry of Revenue after making some arrangements. Once he became familiar with the procedures, he could expect to be promoted based on his abilities.
When Ji Huaizhi first took office, his colleagues initially thought he was from a poor family.
He might be rather pedantic or rigid, especially considering his humble background.
At first, everyone was quite exclusive.
However, after a brief encounter, I found that he was quite quick-witted and understood things very well.
Moreover, they discovered that he was very insightful in his dealings with people and things, not petty at all, and did not seem to be as strapped for cash as they had imagined.
Jiang Xinyue was waiting in a small alley. When she saw Qiaolian coming, she asked excitedly, "You're here?"
"Miss, you're here."
Jiang Xinyue gave the man next to her a look, then suddenly yelled in Ji Huaizhi's direction, "Ah! Help!"
"There's a robbery going on!"
Qiaolian also shouted, "Help! Someone's robbing us!"
Other people on the street looked over.
A man carrying a purse ran towards Ji Huaizhi. Jiang Xinyue anxiously said to Ji Huaizhi, "Young Master, please help catch him!"
Ji Huaizhi stood with his hands behind his back, showing no reaction. Everyone just watched as the man who snatched the purse ran right up to Ji Huaizhi.
The man had expected Ji Huaizhi to stop him, but to his surprise, Ji Huaizhi did not react at all.
I had already outrun him, so I gritted my teeth, threw my purse at his feet, and ran away.
The people were all stunned.
Was this novice thief scared?
Jiang Xinyue was surprised that Ji Huaizhi didn't react at all. Shouldn't he have caught the thief?
After a moment of stunned silence, the act still had to continue.
"Thank you, young master. This sachet is very important to my daughter. Luckily, it wasn't stolen by thieves."
Jiang Xinyue squatted down slightly, her voice soft and sweet.
She thought he would pick up the sachet for her, but he just stood there blankly, without reacting at all.
"This was left here by that thief. Why are you thanking me?"
Qiaolian also felt embarrassed, seemingly not expecting that this young master Ji would not react at all, how uncouth! So she had no choice but to pick up the sachet herself.
Jiang Xinyue forced a smile: "Young master, your upright character standing here frightened that thief so much that he dared not steal."
"Of course I must thank you, young master."
Ji Huaizhi couldn't help but sneer: "Heh~"
Seeing his cold smile, Jiang Xinyue felt annoyed.
Then I thought it was understandable that he didn't know who he was.
Qiaolian rebuked, "How dare you! My young lady is the daughter of the Prime Minister. Why is the young master behaving like this?"
Ji Huaizhi: "Since you are the daughter of the Prime Minister, why didn't you let the guards behind you chase after the villains? Anyone who didn't know better would think this was a setup for me."
Jiang Xinyue didn't expect her to be so stubborn. She forced a smile and said, "Young master, you are overthinking it. Of course, a guard should protect me thoroughly."
"What if it's a ploy to lure us away from our mountain? Wouldn't that be falling into the villains' trap?"
Ji Huaizhi had an expression that said, "I'll just watch your performance quietly."
Jiang Xinyue was at a loss as to how to continue acting.
"I apologize for disturbing you today, young master." Jiang Xinyue had never been outdone before. "I will go back and tell my father about this. Farewell."
Noticing that he was still expressionless, Jiang Xinyue felt annoyed and all her appreciation for him vanished.
Even when he brought up his father, the other party didn't react at all.
I really misjudged him.
Doesn't he know that his father has the final say in the entire court?
Even His Majesty treats my father with deference.
Jiang Xinyue turned and left, originally planning to let him help her retrieve the sachet so that she could say it was a gift from her elder sister in the palace, and also let him know that she was the daughter of the Prime Minister.
Make him treat you differently.
I never expected him to be such a useless piece of wood.
It's truly hopeless; there's no way to carve out rotten wood.
Ah Gui, standing behind him, asked with concern, "Sir, is she going to complain about you?"
"What if the Prime Minister makes things difficult for you?"
Ji Huaizhi, hands behind his back: "Let's just leave it at that."
Ah Gui exclaimed "Ah!" and quickly followed Ji Huaizhi.
The two men upstairs had been watching the scene unfold. After the man left, they looked at each other and smiled. "Brother, is he this year's new top scholar?"
"What a hothead."
The man waving his fan raised an eyebrow: "Isn't that exactly the kind of hothead I'm looking for?"
"He was not afraid of powerful figures, and he did not fawn over the young lady when he heard that she was the current prime minister. When I saw him, I thought he was a pretty good person."
Prince Rong stroked his chin: "But Your Majesty, you think this person is good, and others also think he is good."
"Even the Prime Minister's daughter has taken a liking to him."
The man closed his fan: "If it cannot be used by me, then I will overthrow it."
"I'm so angry!" Jiang Xinyue stormed back to her residence.
Qiaolian glanced at her mistress and gave the others a meaningful look: "Miss, please don't be angry."
"How can I not be angry?" Jiang Xinyue was so angry that she couldn't help but kick the servant standing to the side.
The maid cried out in pain. Jiang Xinyue said impatiently, "If you can't even bear this little bit of pain, what's the point of keeping her alive? Drag her away!"
"Kill him and throw him out!"
"Miss, spare me! Miss, spare me!"
The maid's desperate pleas for mercy did not soften Jiang Xinyue's heart; she only found it noisy.
Qiaolian saw it immediately: "Drag him out!"
Just as things quieted down, a maid brought in a food box. Qiaolian took it and said, "Miss, don't be angry. It's not worth getting sick over someone like that."
"The servants below made some sweet dishes to cool you down."
Jiang Xinyue sat down, her brows furrowed.
Qiaolian continued, "It is his good fortune to be favored by Miss, but he is not fortunate enough to deserve Miss's favor."
Jiang Xinyue felt a little better: "If the people my mother and elder sister had prepared hadn't all failed, I wouldn't have gone to see this blockhead."
"He looks good, but he's not smart enough. He's not even fit to carry my shoes!"
As she spoke, Jiang Xinyue gritted her teeth.
I never expected him to be so ungrateful.
"That's right, it's not worth getting angry over someone like that, Miss. He's just a good-for-nothing."
Qiaolian breathed a sigh of relief when she saw that her expression had indeed improved a lot.
Jiang Xinyue had made up her mind. She was going to tell her father that Ji Huaizhi was no good, to teach him a lesson, and let him know the consequences of offending her.
"Alright, I'll go pay my respects to my mother tomorrow. I really don't like what she sent over."
"If none of them are decent-looking, I won't get married."
