Chapter 7 The Ungrateful Childhood Sweetheart
"I was just looking for you." Ji Huaizhi saw Zhou Peng get up.
"What do you want from me?" Zhou Peng asked, puzzled. Seeing the money in his hand, he quickly replied, "I don't lend money."
"I know." Ji Huaizhi wasn't planning to borrow from him. "I remember you mentioned in the dorm that the school library was hiring an administrator? And you have a relative who works at the school?"
Zhou Peng took a sip of water: "Are you going to take a part-time job?"
"Going is fine too. I'll put in a good word with my aunt. We're hiring anyway, and I think it's best to go if you know someone."
"I want Xiaomei to go. Her current job isn't good and it's far from me. I'd like her to move closer to the school." Ji Huaizhi spoke sincerely. The original owner of this body had helped him a lot with his studies, so he felt comfortable asking for this.
"Brother, please help me out. I'll definitely remember this favor."
Zhou Peng's expression was a little strange. After hesitating for a moment, he asked, "Are you serious, bro?"
Don't you think you're being too close to your sister?
This was a simple matter. They were looking to hire someone for this position anyway, and my aunt asked him if he knew anyone who wanted to work part-time.
He only mentioned it briefly in his dorm room.
"I feel like there's something strange about you two, and I don't want to cause trouble."
Zhou Peng is a straightforward person; sometimes speaking his mind first can save a lot of trouble later.
“That’s not my sister, she’s my girlfriend.” Ji Huaizhi said directly, “I won’t lie to you, Xiaomei and I grew up together, and her family made her drop out of school in junior high.”
“When I got into this school, my family wouldn’t let me continue my studies, so I brought her to the provincial capital.”
"The two of us are now living together in the provincial capital, relying on each other for survival."
Zhou Peng's eyes widened: "Then why did you say she was your cousin before?"
"To put it bluntly, what happened between Xiaomei and me was essentially an elopement." Ji Huaizhi's statement didn't seem entirely wrong: "So..."
After all, it would be really unpleasant for people to hear about eloping.
Zhou Peng stroked his chin: "No wonder your sister cried like a dead man when you fell and hurt yourself. She's a true sister to you."
At this point, a strange look appeared in Zhou Peng's eyes again: "So you're being supported by your partner now?"
Ji Huaizhi nodded in agreement: "She helped me save up for my tuition in my freshman year."
Zhou Peng didn't know what to say. He could tell from his usual observation that Ji Huaizhi wasn't very wealthy, but after hearing this, he felt that they had a tough time together, and even had a sense of being a pair of star-crossed lovers.
"Okay, have her come over. I'll take you all with me then," Zhou Peng said.
“But the library’s salary isn’t high; that little bit of money probably won’t be enough for the two of you.”
“The library is much easier than the restaurant, mainly because it’s closer to me. Now that I’m a sophomore, I’m not as busy as I was in my freshman year, so I can find work to do. It’s better than leaving her there alone.”
Zhou Peng looked at him with even more respect after hearing what he said.
He used to look down on his younger sister. When he was in college, his sister would often bring him money and gifts while she was at work. His roommates even thought they were a family that favored sons over daughters.
With Jiang Xiaomei's job secured, Ji Huaizhi went to look for an apartment.
Unexpectedly, while looking at houses, they ran into the same person who had hit the original owner on a motorcycle.
Seeing him pull out the motorcycle key and get off, Ji Huaizhi stepped forward without thinking and stopped him. Because of the sudden movement, the motorcycle crashed to the ground.
"Who are you?" The man being held down struggled, shouting, "Let go!"
"Believe it or not, I'll have someone take care of you!"
Ji Huaizhi glanced at his face: "See this wound on my head? Do you remember it?"
The man immediately recognized him when he saw the bandage wrapped around his head and the somewhat familiar face.
"Brother, is it really necessary? You've come all the way to my house." The man exclaimed, "I don't think you're in any serious trouble."
"Do you think it's that serious? You hit someone and ran away. Now you're coming with me to the police station. Hit-and-run, you'll be in big trouble!" Ji Huaizhi pulled him up.
Someone heard the commotion and came out to see what was going on.
"What are you doing? What are you doing?" A middle-aged woman came out from inside: "Why are you grabbing my son?"
Ji Huaizhi said coldly, "Your son caused a hit-and-run. I took him to the police station. The accident happened right at the south gate of the university. There were quite a few people who saw it, including witnesses."
"No, no, no, let's talk this out." The man didn't expect this person to be so serious.
"I see you're alright, can we settle this privately?"
Ji Huaizhi: "No way, look at my head! The doctor said I have a concussion. You can go to the hospital and ask if you don't believe me."
"You think a concussion is a concussion? I think you're just trying to scam me!" The woman slapped Ji Huaizhi.
Ji Huaizhi's face changed: "Hey! Try hitting me again!"
“I still have the injuries your son sustained in the accident! I’ll just collapse to the ground in a minute.”
"Don't push me, I know where you live."
The woman quickly stopped; he really was trying to extort money from her.
"Name your price, and we can call it even," the man said, sounding unsure of himself. It was indeed his fault, and he felt ashamed with so many people watching.
"No way, you hit me and ran away. I'm going to take you to the police station and give you a criminal record so you'll learn your lesson!" He's currently short of money.
We must try to squeeze some money out of him.
The man could tell from his expression that he wouldn't give up easily.
Those around them also tried to persuade the perpetrator to sincerely apologize and compensate, and to let Ji Huaizhi be lenient and for both of them to back down.
Seeing that Ji Huaizhi's expression softened, the man called out to his mother, "Go get the money."
"Brother, I was really wrong. I was scared at the time. I will definitely pay for the medical expenses and other compensation. Please let me go. I can't have a criminal record."
The middle-aged woman also pulled him aside and apologized: "Yes, young man, I will definitely teach him a lesson, and we will pay for it."
"I was rude just now, and my aunt was frightened."
After saying that, he went inside to get the money.
Ji Huaizhi was silent for a moment before saying, "It was everyone who persuaded me, otherwise I would have fought you to the death."
The mother and son compensated Ji Huaizhi with more than 6,000 yuan, giving him all the cash in their home.
Ji Huaizhi accepted it: "Don't be upset that I've taken your six thousand. After all, I hit my head, and if I really wanted to argue, six thousand wouldn't be enough. You should understand what I mean."
"Don't come looking for me after this is over. If you try to blackmail me, I won't stand for it." The man glared at Ji Huaizhi.
She looked as if she was afraid he would come looking for her again.
The main thing is that since he knows their address, I might as well just give him six thousand to settle things.
"Don't worry, this will all be over."
This neighborhood was definitely no longer worth looking at, so Ji Huaizhi took the money and went to another neighborhood.
The other apartment is an older one-bedroom unit.
This house was allocated by the landlord's former work unit. It's small but adequate, and the surrounding residents are all highly educated people.
Generally speaking, the residents in this kind of community are not so noisy.
Jiang Xiaomei was very happy when she arrived. When she first came in, she looked around curiously: "There is a piece of land outside that we can use to grow vegetables, so we can save money on vegetables."
Upon seeing the house, he cautiously asked:
"This place is much better than the one we stayed at before. It must be expensive, right?"
"Don't worry about whether it's expensive or not. This is the rent I saved up before. Just pack your things and change your clothes, then come out with me."
