Chapter 8 The Ungrateful Childhood Sweetheart

Chapter 8 The Ungrateful Childhood Sweetheart

Jiang Xiaomei felt a secret joy when she heard that he was saving money to rent a place; he had long planned to bring her over.

"Brother, you're so kind." Jiang Xiaomei said softly to Ji Huaizhi, "What they said is wrong."

Ji Huaizhi turned around with a puzzled look in his eyes.

"It's nothing, I just feel so happy." Jiang Xiaomei looked up at him.

Her eyes seemed to sparkle with stars.

Everyone said she was stupid. Zhang Hong even told people that she would definitely be abandoned in the future. She used to be afraid, but now she felt that Brother Huaizhi would not treat her like that.

"Silly girl."

Ji Huaizhi pinched her nose: "I have more good news for you!"

"Today I found the person who hit me on the motorcycle, and he paid me six thousand yuan in compensation." As he spoke, he took out the money and handed it to her.

This money will last them a long time.

With this money, she no longer had to worry about the two of them going hungry.

"Six thousand in losses?" Jiang Xiaomei exclaimed in surprise. "That much?"

"Yes, he was afraid I would hold him accountable, so he paid such a large sum."

"This money must be hard to get back, right? After all, how could someone like him who hit you and ran away easily take so much money?" Jiang Xiaomei grabbed his arm. "You weren't bullied, were you?"

"No." Ji Huaizhi told her to change her clothes: "We have something to do in a while, let's change first and then go."

"Give me a thousand dollars, you can keep the rest."

Jiang Xiaomei was puzzled, but she did as he said.

When I arrived at the place and listened to them talk, I was surprised that he had found himself a job so quickly.

It's such a respectable job.

"I will definitely do my best," Jiang Xiaoli promised.

Aunt Zhou nodded: "Just do a good job. Although the salary is low, the work is simple. It's just displaying, organizing, cleaning, and taking inventory of these books. It's easy to do."

"An important point is that we must keep a record of all the books that students borrow."

"The working hours are not long, there are different shifts, and there are many holidays, not to mention winter and summer vacations."

Jiang Xiaomei nodded: "Mm."

"Alright, that's all." Aunt Zhou glanced at her watch. "You can come and cover his shift after that person from the library leaves. I'll tell you the rest later."

"I have something to do, so I'll head over first."

The last sentence was spoken by Aunt Zhou to Zhou Peng.

"Okay, Auntie." Zhou Peng waved his hand.

"If there's nothing else, I'll be going now." Zhou Peng didn't want to bother them any further.

Ji Huaizhi grabbed him: "You've helped me so much, we definitely have to have a meal together. Let's go to the back street. You were the one who took me to the hospital last time."

"We should thank you properly."

Zhou Peng knew they were having difficulties: "Maybe next time."

Ji Huaizhi pulled him away immediately: "Don't worry, do you remember the person who hit me last time?"

"I ran into him today, and I even lost money."

"That's great news!"

The three of them ate fish in the back street and ordered other dishes as well. Zhou Peng could tell that they were genuinely grateful to him.

It's enough that he knows how to be grateful; he only did it because he saw that the two of them were really in a difficult situation.

Jiang Xiaomei was initially shy and reserved, but she loosened up a bit as she finished eating. It was only then that Zhou Peng realized her name was Xiaomei, not Xiaomei.

After dinner, Ji Huaizhi put his arm around Zhou Peng and stuffed two red envelopes into his shirt pocket.

"What are you doing? You don't need to do this," Zhou Peng said, refusing.

"Take it, you've helped us a lot. There's also a red envelope for your aunt." Ji Huaizhi patted his chest.

"I've worked outside for a few days myself, so I know these rules."

"It's just that this red envelope is rather small, so..."

Zhou Peng didn't expect him to understand these social niceties: "You're saying all this, but you don't need the money anyway."

Ji Huaizhi didn't give him a chance to refuse and left with Xiaomei directly.

"So that red envelope was for him." Jiang Xiaomei felt bad about giving away a thousand yuan all at once.

“They helped you with your work, so you should at least show some appreciation.” Ji Huaizhi looked down at her.

"After you finish your work, you can read books in the library. When conditions are better, I will send you to night school."

Ji Huaizhi knew that she wanted to continue her studies.

Jiang Xiaomei waved her hand: "Forget it, I've been out of school for so long."

"If people become stupid, what's the point of studying?"

Seeing her so self-conscious, Ji Huaizhi encouraged her: "It's never too late to learn. For no other reason than that what you learn is yours, and your degree is yours too."

Jiang Xiaomei pursed her lips: "We'll talk about it later. It's fine as it is now."

"I have plenty of free time at the library, so I'll find a job delivering milk or helping out at a restaurant. That way, I can save up for your tuition next year."

Ji Huaizhi sighed: "Xiaomei, you don't need to worry about these things. You won't be so busy in your second year, I'll take care of things."

I'm here for you.

These words echoed in Jiang Xiaomei's ears.

No one said those three words to her.

Her brother Huaizhi had never said anything like that before. She worked tirelessly under pressure, afraid that the two of them would go hungry and that he wouldn't be able to go to school because he didn't have the tuition fees.

It's okay if she's not doing well herself, but he's a college student now.

Ji Huaizhi grabbed her hand: "I'll hold the sky up even if it falls. You should rest for a while."

Jiang Xiaomei lowered her head, looking like she was about to cry.

"Wan Jie, what are you looking at?" several female classmates asked, holding their books.

Wan Jie tilted her head: "That looks like Ji Huaizhi from our class who was on leave. Isn't that his sister next to him?"

Are they holding hands when they're this intimate?

"He's your boyfriend, right? I thought he liked you before," someone said with a laugh. "The way he looks at you is different."

Wan Jie was speechless and quickly stopped her: "Don't talk nonsense, that's how rumors start."

Zhou Peng took the two red envelopes and went to find his aunt first.

"Why are you here again? What's up?" Aunt Zhou asked without looking up.

Zhou Peng pulled her outside: "I have something to tell you."

Seeing that there were hardly any people around, Zhou Peng took out two red envelopes: "These are from Ji Huaizhi, he's very kind."

Aunt Zhou raised an eyebrow. This kid is quite worldly-wise.

"Is the other one for you? How many were wrapped?"

"Five hundred yuan in one red envelope." Zhou Peng could tell from his aunt's expression that she thought it was too little, so he quickly explained, "Their families are in special circumstances, and they can't afford much money."

"Auntie, please help them."

"He probably scraped together that thousand."

"I'm only doing this because of you, so you can keep both red envelopes." Aunt Zhou gave the money to her nephew.

"Tell your friend to have the girl come tomorrow."

Zhou Peng scoffed, "Then why did you tell her to wait until the other person left before coming?"

"So there's a trick to it?"

Aunt Zhou poked her nephew's head: "It's all because your friend knows how to get things done."

"Learn from this."
