Chapter 9 The Ungrateful Childhood Sweetheart

Chapter 9 The Ungrateful Childhood Sweetheart

Jiang Xiaomei adapted to working at the library very quickly.

She wasn't greasy or smelled of cooking oil, and she really liked the work environment.

Even after I finished my work, I was still reading books here.

She often sees Huai Zhi, and sometimes he brings her milk tea when he doesn't have classes. They also eat together in the cafeteria at noon.

Just like other couples on campus, this kind of life was something Jiang Xiaomei never dared to dream of before.

When they first started holding hands on campus, she felt very uncomfortable because she was afraid of embarrassing him because of her situation.

I was thinking of staying by his side as his cousin, but I didn't expect that when I ran into his classmate in the cafeteria, he would directly say that I was his girlfriend.

Jiang Xiaomei was both surprised and delighted.

That day, after she finished her work as usual, she was about to continue reading the novel she hadn't finished when two girls walked in.

One of them wore a long dress with a Peter Pan collar, and her long, straight black hair was draped over her shoulders. She looked serene, gentle, and very beautiful.

The other girl had short hair, wore black skinny jeans and a loose brown leather jacket. The two mismatched people standing together were quite eye-catching.

"Hello, I'd like to borrow a novel but I couldn't find it. Could you help me see if you still have any?" Wan Jie didn't want to make a wasted trip.

I was taken aback when I saw this simply dressed girl.

It's her.

"Tell me, and I'll help you find it," Jiang Xiaomei awkwardly typed on the computer.

She didn't know how to use a computer before, so Ji Huaizhi set up a computer at an internet cafe and taught her how to use it.

"It's that novel by Liang Sheng."

Before Jiang Xiaomei could finish typing, her gaze fell on the book in front of her. She gave an awkward laugh and said, "The last one is with me. You want to borrow it, right?"

"Give me your student ID, and I'll register you."

"You've almost finished reading, you can continue. I'll read other books first." Wan Jie looked down at the thick book; there weren't many pages left.

Is this book really that heart-wrenching?

Jiang Xiaomei waved her hand: "You can borrow it first, I'll look at it later."

"But it is indeed a bit angsty."

Wan Jie smiled and said, "Take a look first. Don't you recognize me?"

Jiang Xiaomei blinked: "You and Brother Huaizhi are classmates."

The person next to me asked, "Do you know each other?"

Wan Jie nodded: "You forgot, I didn't notice when I had my period before, and you took off your clothes to cover me up."

Jiang Xiaomei did recall this incident: "Oh, it's you. I'm sorry, I didn't recognize you."

Wan Jie shook her head: "I should thank you. Do you work here now? I'll treat you to milk tea next time you come."

Jiang Xiaomei smiled and said, "Yes, you're welcome. Anyone would have helped you with this. You gave me drinks and snacks before."

"That's a thank-you gift. I feel we're destined to be friends," Wan Jie said with a smile, which made her even more likable.

Jiang Xiaomei was a little shy and smiled at them awkwardly.

Three girls were chatting at the bar.

The short-haired girl asked curiously, "You call Ji Huaizhi 'brother' in our class. Is he your brother or your boyfriend?"

Jiang Xiaomei's eyes sparkled, and she smiled softly, saying, "He's my boyfriend."

"I call him brother because that's what I've called him since I was little."

Wan Jie chuckled as she saw her blush: "So you're childhood sweethearts? No wonder you two are so sweet."

"You're even younger than Ji Huaizhi, so why aren't you in school?" the short-haired girl asked curiously.

Wan Jie frowned slightly and gave her a look, indicating that she had overstepped her bounds.

Jiang Xiaomei smiled after hearing this and didn't say anything.

Her junior high school education was a thorn in her side.

The short-haired girl realized what was happening and slapped herself in the mouth. Wan Jie noticed that her gaze was fixed on the library entrance and glanced back at her.

"We'll be going now so as not to bother you any longer." Wan Jie made a goodbye gesture: "I'll come to borrow books from you next time."

When they passed by Ji Huaizhi, the two exchanged a brief greeting, and Ji Huaizhi simply nodded in acknowledgment.

"You know each other?" If I'm not mistaken, the three of them were just chatting.

“I met Wan Jie before and helped her with a small favor.” Jiang Xiaomei was a little puzzled when she saw him arrive at this time: “Don’t you have classes today?”

"Physical education class." Ji Huaizhi took a piece of fruit out of his pocket and gave it to her.

Jiang Xiaomei laughed and said, "You're like someone who goes out hunting; you always have something in your pockets."

Ji Huaizhi saw her smiling contentedly and patted her head: "I won't be able to have lunch with you for a while. I have an idea that I want to try."

Jiang Xiaomei was disappointed. To be honest, she felt a little uneasy at school without Ji Huaizhi by her side.

Perhaps she never belonged to this school.

"Are there any part-time jobs? I can work with you."

Ji Huaizhi shook his head: "We can do it together after things stabilize later. It's too tiring right now."

"I'm not afraid of hard work." She, on the other hand, felt that she had too much free time.

"I don't want you to work hard." Ji Huaizhi refused without hesitation: "Haven't you been enjoying reading lately?"

"Reading in the library is quite nice, it's cool there."

When asked about reading, Jiang Xiaomei seemed a little guilty, placing her hand on the novel in front of her: "I haven't been reading any other books lately, just novels."

"I don't know why, but I just can't concentrate on studying those textbooks."

The voice grew softer and softer.

After all, those textbooks were something Ji Huaizhi had gone to great lengths to find. She felt inferior about her educational background, but also hated that she was too ordinary. She hadn't been to school for several years, and now she couldn't even concentrate on reading the textbooks.

"If you don't like reading textbooks, then don't read them." Ji Huaizhi thought there was something else going on.

"Reading novels is also reading books."

“But reading novels is useless. I can’t improve my education level without reading textbooks.” Jiang Xiaomei sighed, “Why don’t I have the photographic memory of the characters in novels?”

"And I feel like I have no self-discipline at all."

"Who said it's useless?" Ji Huaizhi laughed at her: "It's a good thing to like reading."

"We are all ordinary people; there is not even one genius among ten thousand people."

When it was time to change shifts, Jiang Xiaomei and Ji Huaizhi walked outside.
