Chapter 274 Female Shoe Factory Workers in the 1970s (18)

An old fox is an old fox. Judging from Director Du's calm expression, Xu Keke knew that his scheme was about to succeed.

Xu Keke just couldn't understand why he had been transferred to the bureau so early in his previous life. Leaving without making any achievements didn't seem like his style.

Director Wu and Factory Director Chen had long been unable to hold out any longer; they had already gone out for a smoke several times when other section chiefs invited them.

Seeing that Director Du hadn't moved, they felt awkward about leaving directly. However, their expressions weren't very pleasant.

Factory Director Du watched coldly from the sidelines, but when the two returned, he suddenly became angry. He threw down what he was holding and roared, "Go, call everyone back to me!"

Director Du was known for his kindness and affability at the factory, always smiling at everyone. His sudden outburst of anger startled everyone.

Xu Keke turned her head and caught sight of Du Yi, who looked extremely nervous. He was frantically clutching her clothes, mouthing anxiously, "What should we do? What should we do?"

Xu Keke rolled her eyes inwardly. This guy was either a product of genetic recombination in the Du family, or, as the old saying goes, one generation is clever, the next is stupid. He just happened to be caught in this wave.

Xu Keke rolled her eyes at him and forcefully pulled the clothes out of his hands.

Du Yi has seen this disdainful look quite often lately, and he's gotten used to it.

She calmed down instantly. She released her grip, pretended to adjust her cane to ease her embarrassment, and mentally prepared herself before standing aside as if nothing had happened.

In just a short while, the factory director's secretary had already called everyone back.

Factory Director Du pointed at them angrily and said, "You bunch of people are outrageous! We agreed to work together, how can you slack off?"

Perhaps it's because Director Du has always been perceived as an approachable and open-minded leader.

Several bolder section chiefs complained directly, "Director Du doesn't sleep at night, no one can stay up. Who works at night?"

"Exactly, we'll send people over to help during the day tomorrow, so we don't have to work all night. Who can stand this?"

"That's right, it's just painting a wall, there's no need to do it at night."

Factory Director Du listened to their chatter without getting angry. He sized them up.

"If you can't hold on, the workers are. Go up to the workshop now and see for yourself. The workers are still working; they still have tasks to complete. According to the factory's regulations, they'll have points deducted if they don't finish their tasks."

"Are you the only ones who know what it's like to be tired? Don't they know how it is?"

Listen carefully to the underlying meaning; these section chiefs aren't fools to have reached their positions. They all understand the purpose of tonight's performance.

Some people who didn't speak up during the meeting jumped out and said, "I was thinking during the meeting that there's no need to work all night, it's not like we have so much work that we can't finish it."

The factory's security chief was a rough-around-the-edges guy from the military; he always spoke bluntly, yelling at the top of his lungs.

"Exactly! Even if there's too much work to do, you should bring in more people. This is unacceptable!"

Hearing these people talking like this, Director Wu lost his temper first. "Stop talking after the event. Didn't you all agree during the meeting? Now that the decision has been made, how can we change it? We can't let people say that we leaders are changing our minds all the time."

"With him saying that, things will be much easier," Director Du said with a good-natured smile.

“Why can’t this be changed? After all, our factory leaders aren’t perfect either. We should admit our mistakes and correct them. We didn’t think of this before, but now that we’ve tried it ourselves, we’ve found that working late into the night slows down the process and wastes manpower and resources. Since everyone feels it’s wrong, let’s cancel it. Who can laugh at us then?”

Factory Director Chen took two steps forward and stood next to Factory Director Du. "Old Du's suggestion is excellent. In that case, I announce that starting tomorrow, we're canceling this event. As for the next event..."

Xu Ke probably noticed that the section chiefs' pupils were dilated. In those cases, it was a classic case of the snipe and the clam fighting, while a third party profited. They weren't the third party, so they didn't benefit; they were just caught in the middle and suffered.

After catching his breath, Factory Director Chen said, "For the next event, our factory management will discuss it further and make a decision. Everyone is tired today, so let's all go home first."

Du Yi stood beside her, muttering to himself without saying a word. Even without him speaking, Xu Keke could guess what he was cursing.

It was clearly Factory Director Du who raised the question, but Factory Director Chen made the decision the moment he opened his mouth. He simply wanted to prove that he had more decision-making power than Factory Director Du. Most importantly, he also did a favor by doing someone a favor, allowing him to be the good guy as well.

But Director Du clearly didn't care about any of that; he even smiled at the section chiefs.

"You can leave, but don't forget what you said: each department should send one person to help out in the warehouse tomorrow. They need to report first thing in the morning. If any department doesn't send someone, I'll put that department's name on the bulletin board."

"Don't worry, Director Du, you underestimate us." A section chief shouted at Director Du as he walked wearily forward.

"We have learned the lesson you taught us tonight."

The others chimed in. Xu Keke overheard them discussing that it was too late, and they were all planning to spend the night in the department instead of going home.

Some people even took out the progress schedule that Xu Keke had Du Yi send over and were discussing how they couldn't let the older people come tomorrow. It looked simple, but they needed to find younger people for this job.

Before Director Wu and Factory Director Chen left, Factory Director Chen came over and gave Xu Keke a few words of advice. It was nothing more than a thank you for your hard work and a reminder to be careful at work.
