Xu Keke was unaware of what was happening at the academy. Lin Munan called the school to tell her that they had other activities planned and asked her not to go home for the time being.
Both of them were professors at the college and key members of the faculty, and they were quite involved in international affairs. Xu Keke didn't take it to heart.
Over the weekend, Fang San drove Xu Keke to the store again.
In Xu Keke's eyes, Fang San is now an all-rounder. He can fix cars; he can fix the tripped circuit breaker in the hallway; he's called over when the neighbor's water pipes are leaking. He can even handle minor problems with the TV and refrigerator.
The new TV antenna was a bit loose, so the sales clerk, Xiao Zhang, called Fang San over. Xu Keke was left standing there watching TV alone.
"Sister Tingting," Tao Min looked at Xu Keke somewhat shyly, leaving Xu Keke a little bewildered.
Are you and your third brother dating?
The girl's cheeks were flushed, but her eyes were frighteningly bright. She looked directly at her, laying her thoughts bare before her. Xu Keke knew that if she simply said yes, those eyes would dim, but the girl would probably stop worrying.
Her current relationship with Fang San is that of neighbors, friends, and business partners. They are not lovers yet. Most importantly, the owner of this body is legally married.
Seeing Xu Keke shake her head and hearing her say "no," Tao Min's eyes curved into crescents, her dimples as sweet as honey.
Turning around, Xu Keke saw Fang San staring at them expressionlessly, unaware of how much he had overheard.
"Sister Tingting, my sister asked me to meet you. She wants to ask if you could help her brother with his English if you have some free time. He's staying here for the next few days."
Feeling a little guilty under Fang San's gaze, Xu Keke agreed without even figuring out who Tao Min's sister was.
Xu Keke spent half a day teaching English to Fan Tao's brother-in-law at his house. When Fang San came to invite her home and was warmly invited to stay for dinner, Xu Keke finally realized what was going on. The Fan family was using this as an excuse to lure Fang San into staying for dinner.
The fact that I came to teach English was the signal for the cup-smashing incident. And yet, I taught with such seriousness and dedication. She said that the child was clearly a good student, so why was his attitude so bad and uncooperative? She probably thought he was just a hired extra.
The Fan family's hospitality towards Fang San was almost too much for Xu Keke to bear. The meal was so lavish that Xu Keke felt like it was New Year's. Especially when the sweet little Tao Min, at the prompting of the Fan family's daughter-in-law, kept shyly serving food to Fang San, Xu Keke, faced with the choice between enjoying the delicious food and going home, quickened her pace of the meal.
While they were eating, Xiao Yujie's brother called looking for her. The eldest son of the Fan family picked up a piece of braised pork with his chopsticks, stuffed it into his mouth, and then reluctantly ran out.
Xiao Yujie, who followed the eldest son of the Fan family into the room, was almost unrecognizable to Xu Keke. Not only had she lost weight, but her face had also lost its luster, and she looked as dull and gray as the jacket she was wearing.
Seeing that Xu Keke was also there, Xiao Yujie unusually ignored her. After greeting the Fan family couple, she went into the inner room.
This time, Xiao Yujie didn't shout; in fact, she kept her voice low. They were sitting in the outer room and couldn't hear what was being said inside. But when Xiao Yujie came out, her face was covered in tears.
Seeing her like this, Fan's wife quickly went to her side and asked with concern, "Yujie, what's wrong? Is something the matter?"
The sound was like a switch being turned on. Xiao Yujie suddenly looked up, her eyes red from crying, staring blankly at Xu Keke. "You knew all along, didn't you? You knew all along, you bad woman."
Xiao Yujie reached out her arms and lunged at Xu Keke. Fang San grabbed her wrist and twisted it behind her back.
"You vicious woman, it was you, you did it on purpose. It was all your fault." Even as Fang San held her down, Xiao Yujie continued to chant frantically.
Not sure if it was what she thought, Xu Keke put down her chopsticks and walked up to Xiao Yujie. "What's wrong with you? What did I do on purpose? Tell me."
"You knew all along that Li Shaojie and Li Yumei were husband and wife, didn't you?" Xiao Yujie showed no intention of breaking free. She just twisted her body and glared fiercely at Xu Keke.
Xu Keke gestured for Fang San to release her. Fang San let go, and Xiao Yujie slumped to the ground, wiping away tears with the back of her hand. Fang San stood warily beside Xu Keke, watching Xiao Yujie with suspicion.
“They can’t be a couple. Li Shaojie’s file says he’s unmarried,” Xu Keke said to Xiao Yujie.
“My brother went to their village. At first, the villagers didn’t say anything, but later they thought my brother was an investigator from higher up, so they were scared and told everything. That Li Yumei is Li Shaojie’s wife. She’s been living with them since she was ten years old.”
"She was already living with them when she was ten? How did she get registered in their household?"
Xiao Yujie didn't care about anything anymore, wiped her nose with her sleeve, and said, "How would I know? You vicious woman, you saw that Fang Minghui and I were getting along well, so you deliberately broke us up. You knew that he and Li Yumei were husband and wife, so you deliberately pushed me into it so that you could escape. You vicious woman."
A woman's intuition is often accurate. It has to be said, Xiao Yujie's seemingly nonsensical ramblings were half right. The only problem was that he had merely created the opportunity for her; everything else was done by Xiao Yujie herself.
Xu Keke looked at her and said, "It's no use making a scene here. Don't you want to hear Li Shaojie's explanation? Maybe it makes sense."
In her past life, Xiao Yujie eventually married Li Shaojie. The now-down-out Du Wenting had met Xiao Yujie and mentioned Li Yumei to her. But Xiao Yujie said she already knew and told Du Wenting not to spread rumors. That must have been Li Shaojie, who had already given her a plausible reason.
